Ever have somebody say something or something happen that caused you, even momentarily, to become incredibly self-conscious about your hobby?

If not, congratulations. If so, spill it here!

Needless to say, this will mostly be painful childhood memories, from a time when you actually cared what people thought about you.

I pulled this game out and my friend who wasn't really into games any more said, "hmm, ages 9 to adult . . . and you still play it . . ."

I quickly suggested we do something else.

My friend and I were playing this on a nice summer day. His dad came in, hoping that his son would go play tennis with him. "Ah, dicing with dragons again . . ." he said, condescendingly.

(It's funny how these things stick with you.)

They: What are you doing?
Me: Playing a CoSim.
They: What's that?
Me: (...Lengthy explanation...) but interrupted
They: What are these paper chits?
Me: Counters - playing pieces.
They: And the Black ones? SS?
Me: Yes, as part of the armies who fought there... (interrupted again).
They: SS? And you are German, right? (suspicious look)
Me: Yes, why? (Some seconds pass and my brain catches up). Aaaaaahhhhhh.

Ergo: Don't judge a book by its cover and a gamer by what he plays. You will be wrong most times.

Playing at college in a dorm lobby back in 84:
"What the hell is that???"
A: "It's a war game"
"who are you playing against"
A:"no one...it's a solo game"
"what fun is that....playing against yourself"

At that point I found no reason to try to explain the system or my enjoyment of it to the neaderthal.

I'm usually quite comfortable in my geeky skin, but playing this one in a crowded lunch spot...It's just too much. Nice necklace there, buddy...

When I was in high school, a friend and I were playing chess at the local McDonalds when a bunch of senior football playing neanderthal types came up and started chanting "nerds... nerds... nerds". This was shortly after the movie, Revenge of the Nerds came out. It was actually somewhat clever, but it did make us feel like geeks.
