OK, here's the brief. I'm looking for a two player game that I can play, or start playing, with my 7-year old son. It doesn't need to be too easy to play, because I can always sweak the rules or drop some to make it easier to play now, and introduce more rules as he gets older, so he my son could "grow" with the game. Now Magic would be absolutely perfect, except the collectors side of it completely ruins it. I don't want to introduce my son to a game that would eventually cost me a house, for very obvious reasons! the other good thing about Magic is it's portability. So, any idea about a game that gets my little one's brain working, is easy to carry, not too complicated to learn and play, and has many different scenarios or possible combinations of play?
Many thanks!
J-P

Our six-year-old loves this game. It works really well for two players. One nice feature is that you can treat it like a puzzle until your child "gets it" -- so you both try to figure out the best player for each tile.

Just started playing this with my 7 year old and it was an instant hit. I made sure I understood the rules first and gave him an overview of the game while setting up. Then while playing I took him through his options for his points.

He's already asked to play it again.

The game lends itself nicely to a quick dungeon bash for fun when starting out to a deeper game when you have more experience.

My 6yo in particular enjoys this one, which she has termed "The Eggy Game" because of the image featured prominantly on four of the cards. This game teaches set collection and strategy (do I take the last card I need to complete a set or the #2 card with the exploding kettle to louse up my opponent), and contains a memory component as you cannot look to see what you've already put into your kettle. Highly recommended for both children and adults.

Out of print, but a great game for young boys. My son is currently eight and has no problems with this game. The biggest problem is that it's out of print. The Star Wars combat aspect is particularly appealing to most boys.

This is currently my eight year old son's favorite game. It's easy to learn and plays pretty quickly. The collectible aspect can make it pretty expensive, though you can get by with a starter and one or two boosters. There are lots of the miniatures on eBay, though, so you can probably add a bunch of commons and uncommons fairly inexpensively. The miniatures will also go well with Heroscape, if you end up getting that one.

Good game. Introduce your son to Lord of the Rings....get the book on CD from your library, and let him listen to it. Then bring out this game and let the battle begin. Minimal reading involved. It's a breeze once you get to know the characters. There are also good resources on this site that help with any questions regarding special situation that can arise during the game.

Another entry level Kosmos 2 player game. The only change I make to the rules is to eliminate the "speed round" of picking teams. We pick teams nice and slow and the loser of the last round gets to choose whether to take the advantage or go first.

I HIGHLY recommend this one. When I first heard about it, I didn't think I'd like it, but after having someone show it to me, it was obvious that it is a wonderful game to buy to play with a kid (or with anyone else). It's attractive, fun, easy to teach (about 5 minutes) but not at all slow for experienced gamers.

Einfach Genial has classic Knizia scoring concepts (the winner is the person with the highest lowest score) without being hard to explain. As an added bonus, I've played 2, 3, and 4 player versions of this game, and it scales really well. So, if your 7 year old's other parent wants to play, you can always play three.

This one is a little pricey, but do yourself a favor and hunt it down to at least look at.

I add this game whenever I get a chance. This one is very good for starting out with arithmetic. It encourages the memory, too. Just don't play the rules that come with it. Play Wari or Adi or even a 4 row game (these might be a little trickier to teach, but shouldn't be too bad). Just try out a bunch of rules until you find something you like. My five year old nephew played it with me earlier today. He liked it.

I like Bohnanza with him as he's learning how to bargain, even though his early tries were pretty funny to watch.

The seven and eight year olds who've played Cosmic Encounter with me really love it. Unfortunately, for game play, I have the Avalon Hill version, but the plastic bits really excite them.

They love the mini logic puzzles that come up involving powers. Plus the arguing!
