Ok, so there's plenty of upscale, hipper-than-thou clubs, taverns and pubs in the area. Even a few good ones that don't beg for the use of sarcasm in their description. Occasionally though, the soul calls for a dive. Not just any dive, but a dive your grandparents would have gone to. (note: "dive" does not imply dirtiness in this case; just a place that is cheesy enough to have some character, but still have decent food even if their beer list leaves a homebrewer wistfully contemplating the sole non-domestic bottle in the house)

The Mrs & I stopped off for a drink and a bite on the way home tonight, and happened to to have a copy of Ur in the car, so brought it in - and had the best time playing it while Gram & Gramps had their baked potatoe and snootful in the next booth.. Not to mention running into the Youth Minister, who is a very nice man (and not as old as most peoples' Gram & Gramps - but I digress)

Maybe it was the cherries in the Manhattan. Maybe it was the deep-fried mushrooms (which really *were* quite good). In any event, we're looking for more games to take back with us next time we go.

Criteria:
1) Not too many bits
2) Bits must not be too moisture-sensitive for obvious reasons
3) Not too complicated - hey, we're talking good old-fashioned (so to speak) booze here. The simpler games start looking better and better...
4) Not *too* bizarre in appearance to the passing waitress. This is NOT your hip watering hole, but it IS staffed by nice people who have been pleasantly friendly. We like and don't want to scare them (Ur: "Gee, that looks awfully complicated!")
5) Must play well with 2-3 players (just in case we run into Youth Minister again, who really must be initiated into the glories of BoardGaming..)

My choices come from our smaller game library (although Ur is the only entry we have experiential data for). Please add from your own experience (or intuition).

Also known as "The How Many Rolls Does it Take to Make a Four?" game.
The first part of this game is like Backgammon with a broken leg. Once you're over the hump of having placed four pieces on the entry squares, it's fine though. Any ideas on a fix? I just hate spending the bulk of the game waiting to roll a "4" before I can start playing..

Same deal with the cards. While the finer points of strategy might start to feel a little superfluous after a few rounds of Ol' Grandad, one could still have a good time with this game.

This looks to be the ultimate boardgame for playing in a cafe. I wouldn't really know, because I can't seem to find a copy!

Hey, are you talking about Wedgewood, as in Wedgewood, Seattle? Used to live there!

Not many bits, easy to carry, and can be played on practically any size table. And while it might not be a good game to play while drunk, some would argue that it's even better when you're drunk. I guess it depends on the person.

If you spill anything on it, it can be cleaned with Fantastik and a paper towel!

My buddy Ken and I have played this in bars before, and often attracted conversation from other patrons as they tried to figure out just what we were up to. It has the advantage of having no bits to speak of.

I frequent a brewpub here in Madison, WI quite a bit called the Great Dane. Usually I shy from the main dining room and take a small table in the billiards area. Two weeks ago, I went with a friend of mine for a burger and a couple of pints and I brought this along. I think to most people, it looked like we were just playing "regular" cards as only our server asked what we were up to. Our server was genuinely interested in the game and I passed on the URL of BGG so he could learn more.
