The invention of the knitted beard was a pivotal moment in bearding history, as it allowed young whippersnappers like myself whose only hope of growing anything resembling a proper beard is to be 'invited' to a Siberian holiday camp for several years, the chance to mix it with our more illustrious brothers in chins.
The American Civil War was truly a great time in the history of facial fur. In most other periods General Hooker's sidies would be considered rather daring, but you can see from the nervous look on his face in this picture that he knows he is letting the war down; and the way that Jackson and Burnside are looking at him with barely veiled disgust shows that they know it too.

Me, with a beard a few years ago. Not at the height of it's prowess, but the best image I have. Since getting married, I no longer am allowed to grow my beard out to such a degree. I still wear a beard, however I keep it trimmed.
