So this year we went to Spiel again, two days, Thursday and Friday.

We booked a hotel close to the fair, the Atlantic Congress hotel. We arrived early (no stau ). After we parked the car at the hotel parking garage, we walked 2 minutes to the entrance of the fair. It was 9.45 by then. There was a long row, and we didn't get in until 10.30. (In the afternoon, when it was really quiet, we bought our tickets for Friday, so we could walk right in Friday morning).

We didn't keep track of everything that was explained to us and everything we played, but we've seen a lot (and bought a lot!)

Thursday morning we just wandered around looking at everything that looked interesting. At around 13.00 we walked around the fair and bought everything we already knew we wanted to buy, and then dropped that off at the car. After that we tried to walk around making sure we were not missing anything.

Besides what's listed below, we also got game explanations for:
Expedition Sumatra,
Caravelas,
Toscana,
51st State,
Mijnlieff,
Cadwallon: City of Thieves,
Genesis.

This just seemed like a nicely themed very simple version of RoboRally. Although the gameplay is still somewhat confusing to us for two players (you control two 'bodgers' each then) it was fun enough to try it again. We will then include the two tiny expansions that are in the box.

Back at Hall six we were tempted to try this simple looking game. It has a modular board, which makes the play area somewhat different each time. You start with a stack of discs each, and every turn has to split the stack and move the top part along an empty line to a new spot at the board. Single discs cannot be moved, and the goal is to prevent your opponent from making any more splits. Simple, fun, but limited replayability.

I (C!) like train-related boardgames, like Age of steam (pretty intense), Railroad Tycoon (pretty simple, even fun to play for Suzan), but we are not very much into the stock-trading part of many of these games. Days of Steam then, seemed to be the train-game without this element, so it got my attention pretty quickly. Indeed this is more like Carcassonne then any other train game, although you have to run trains to deliver goods to stations. Our first play was fun, but we forgot the important 'crash in corners' rule, so we have to retry this.

There are a couple of editions of this game, and the version I have was pretty cheap, which made me buy it in the first place. There is an expansion 'locomotives' available, but it isn't really compatible with this version, so that is unfortunate. Also, my copy is missing some components (circuit markers and a die), and of course the famous 'missing title' on the box.

I don't know why, but this game was on my wishlist a while ago. As I didn't know why, I took it off. But then I saw it as a used game, and I coudn't resist.

It turns out it is a childrens game, in which you get a path of different sorts of terrain you have to walk over to the finish. In the middle of the table you put all the terrain cards face down. Then everybody just starts turning around cards and putting them on a pile on their hand. At the end of grabbing cards you turn the pile around and try to walk over your path as far as you can, without changing the order of the terrain cards.

I think it's a fun game, but I suck at it, so that takes away points

Before the fair and during the fair I've looked at this game a few times. I really wanted to like the game, a card game from Friedemann Friese, that's always interesting. But the theme really put me off, mafia is just not that interesting for me.

So it was Friday, 18.40, we were walking past the Rio Grande Games stand and there was a free table with this on it. Caesar! read/scanned the rules quickly and we played a couple of turns. We didn't really get it yet, but could see it was a good game. This became our final buy at Essen 2010.

After reading the rules completely (Caesar!) and playing a whole game I'm really glad we bought it. It's an easy and fast card game, but with enough interesting choices to keep it fun.

Already on our way out on Friday, Caesar! spotted a free table for Mr. Jack Pocket.

We already own Mr. Jack so we didn't really look into this new game. We got a short explanation and played a quick round while the lights were already going out. It's different from Mr. Jack, but it got a bit of the same feel as Mr. Jack also. I wouln't buy it, but if you really love Mr. Jack and want to take it with you everywhere, this may be for you.
