My son asked if he could have his 11th birthday party at the local boardgame store. How was I to tell him no?

I created some invitations based on one of the posters I had made for Tabletop Game & Hobby. Jared got to invite 30 kids. We thought we'd get about 20. We ended up with 27.

We set up 5 games for the kids to play and gave them a little over an hour. Jared led a group in Factory Manager. This was rated as our "HARD" game. The kids were able to complete it in time and Jared says they all had fun - even though one guy ended up tearing down his best machine for some reason. Jared won by $5.

I taught and supervised a 5-player game of Small World. This was marked as a "MEDIUM" difficulty game. We made it through 5 of the 8 rounds. It was a mixed result, with a couple of the kids really enjoying it, one having analysis paralysis and another having trouble concentrating. Steven won with 52 points - 10 points better than two other players.

Alex, my 8 year-old, led a game of Winner's Circle. This was marked as "EASY" difficulty. They completed two races in an hour. One kid kept walking away from the table, but the rest of them had fun. Alex won by $10.

I set up a PitchCar track and a lot of the boys gravitated toward it the moment they walked in the door. This was marked as "VERY EASY" difficulty. Not sure how many races they managed to get in or who won, but they all seemed to have fun.

The fifth game choice was Say Anything. This was marked as "VERY EASY" difficulty, and the girls at the party immediately gravitated to this table. They played one game, then used the boards and markers to play Pictionary.

After the games wrapped up, we served cake. I had the bakery use artwork from one of Jared's favorite games, For Sale.

As the others were eating cake, Jared opened presents. He got a ton of Target gift cards and some UBuild games (Monopoly, Sorry and Battleship). But he was absolutely ecstatic when he opened the gift from his brother - two expansions to Power Grid.

Mom and Dad got him a copy of Pack & Stack, a game that he fell in love with a few weeks earlier at BobCon.

After presents, we split into two villages and played Werewolf.

The table I moderated included the birthday boy. Our werewolves were Jared, Taylor and Gage. (Jared has a crush on Taylor, so I rigged the game so they would both be Werewolves.)

The room erupted when the villagers hung a werewolf (Gage) on their first try. I don't think they'd be as loud if their baseball team had just won the Little League World Series. Brynne, the seer, spotted Jared in the first night and it was a fairly efficient win for the villagers.

Over at the other table, Reilly Michael and Alex were the werewolves. Reilly and Michael were discovered quickly, but Alex managed to pick off the villagers one-by-one until he was the last one standing.

The kids absolutely loved this game. Many were begging to keep playing, even as the parents started arriving to pick them up.

For treat bags, I found some Pirates At Ocean's Edge packs at Target for a buck apiece and tossed in 3 or 4 dice (from a Pound O'Dice bag) and some other goodies.

So everyone got to bring a game home. (Albeit, a tiny one.)
