and myself are both very committed gamers. We meet at least once a week for two player gaming and run a games group one night a week. However, the gamers who attend our games group are... casual to say the least. Let's just say that Alhambra and Coloretto get played an awful lot.

Here's James looking friendly:

And here's me looking happy to be playing a boardgame at all:

We had finally found a committed gamer who lives in our general area (about an hour's drive away).

All three of us have families, so we don't get to get together often. However, when we do, we like to do it properly. Like, all day properly.

James and I travelled to Chris' place on Saturday 6th November and engaged in about 10 hours of gaming goodness over eight different games.

I decided to name this glorious event 'Chriscon' in honour of the heroic deed Chris has performed in filling a major hole in all of our gaming lives.

Now- onto the games!

James and I arrived at around 11am. We met up with Chris and decided to give 3 player Genoa a go.

Now, James and I had attempted to play Genoa 2 player about a week beforehand and quickly decided that it was simply NOT a two player game. The three player version, I am pleased to say, was quite delicious and full of deal making and bribery.

James made full use of his giant charisma, fulfilled several large orders and took this one out easily in the end.

Scores:

James: 825
Jason: 660
Chris: 585

Thebes was new to me and I was pleased that we could give this one a turn. To be honest, I was expecting this to be a complete JASE (just another soulless Euro) based on what I had read on BGG.

To my surprise, I really enjoyed Thebes. It is a rare, theme rich Euro. The use of the time track is clever, and the amount of dirt at each dig site is enough to simulate the frustration of real archaeology.

I got a car early and tried to dig all of the sand out of Egypt. I then did small digs in all the other sites and concentrated on exhibitions. It wasn't enough though, with Chris' "dig everywhere all the time and get the backing of congress" strategy winning in the end.

Chris: 86

We broke out Cuba next for a bit of worker placement / role selection goodness. I went for the water strategy and focused on VP gaining buildings. This was a really close game, with the lead changing throughout the game, and I managed to squeeze out the win in the end. Barely.

We felt like something light next. Langfinger was new to me and to James, so we gave it a go.

I must admit that I felt that I had 'seen it all before, only better' in many other games. It was OK, it just didn't excite me with strategic or tactical decisions. Maybe I just don't like really light games.

It had been a very long time since I had a game of Oasis, so I was glad to see it in Chris' collection.

3 player Oasis is a strange beast because you are often left with your own offer. It definitely plays best with 5.

I focused on the camel strategy and managed to get 20 camels on the board with 4 multipliers. I also ended up with a surprising amount of points in wheat, which I wasn't concentrating on at all. Funny how that happens in this game.

Jason: 164

Chris had bought this on sale at his FLGS so we decided to give it a play. We won fairly easily in the end with the pilot, explorer, and navigator. That combination is really effective.

By this point we had gone co-op crazy! Pandemic came out next and we were so keen that we forgot to take out any epidemic cards. So it turns out it was on the hardest difficulty! We didn't know this at the start of the game but found out when the epidemics just kept coming.

We took random roles and got the dispatcher, ops expert and researcher. Black went crazy early. We managed to stem the tide and find 3 cures, but those 6 epidemic cards were too much in the end. There were too many outbreaks and the world died in a plague filled mess.

So... we played a second game on normal difficulty and had the easiest game of our lives. The random roles were scientist, medic and researcher. Only 3 outbreaks occurred the whole game. That medic is a godsend. We won easily.

RftG was also new to me.

I am a massive San Juan fan and I have heard that RftG is like San Juan on steroids. It was about 8:30pm by this point and this was going to be our last game for the day. I spent the first third of the game trying to work out the symbols on the cards. Thankfully, my knowledge of San Juan gave me the basic gist of the game and I was able to work it out. James also has a San Juan background and picked Race up fairly easily. Chris does not have a San Juan background, and this fact coupled with a day full of games meant he spent most of the game trying to work out what to do. We will play this again in the future on a level playing field, I hope.

Scores:

Jason and James: 36 (Jason won due to more cards in hand)

Chris: 20

By this point it was about 9:30pm and James and I had about an hour of driving in front of us. We decided to call it a night.

There will be another Chriscon this year and Chris will once again grace Canowindra with his presence.

Thanks again Chris for your hospitality and for sharing your games with us.

Stay tuned for the fourth installment of Chriscon!
