This is the geeklist about the "Pasteboard and Plastic XIII" all-day gaming event which was held on Saturday 13th November, 2010 at the Scout hut in Saltdean (Brighton, UK). The entry fees, raffle and any other financial benefit gained from all of the P&P events support the 42nd Brighton (Saltdean) Scouts.

The parent list for this event is the Pasteboard and Plastic Metalist. You can reach information about all the P&P events from there.

Thanks to all the gamers who attended for making it such a successful day. Once again we had some new faces attending their first P&P. It was good to see some young gamers in attendance - and they did rather well out of the raffle!

Special thanks as always must go to Dick for organising another smooth running, intensely enjoyable Pasteboard & Plastic event. Thanks to everyone else for coming too, I'll see you all again at the 14th P&P sometime next year.

All additions and comments are most welcome. These geeklists work best when the attendees take a few minutes to add games played or bought, pictures, comments, jibes, insults(!?) and so on.

May as well start with a big game - and one of the newer releases. I'd been waiting to play this, so I was pleased to see that Dave brought this along. We were joined by Ron (who had played before) and Keith (who hadn't).

This is a game about area control, with worker placement and plenty of competition for everything. There's a clever distinction between dominating an area (being the most suited to it) and having the most species in an area, both of which score you points.

Keith's amphibians were doing really well in the early stages as the earth was quite water based, but the other 3 of us figured that we'd get him back later on when the time was right, so we built up and adapted where we could. Of course, Keith was adapting too, so in fact, he got further ahead as most of the water came out on the earth, with little available for us on our boards.

In the end, we were absolutely destroyed! Keith scored 256, I had 150, Dave 125, Ron 123. It was getting on for a 4 hour game (including tea breaks etc) but we were all gripped and really enjoyed it. This went straight on to my wishlist, there's a lot to think about and a lot of options in game to pick from. I think we were helped by having a 4 player game as you got plenty of actions to choose from, but then each player was pretty much on their own. I can see a 6 palyer gamre having some alliances developing mutually beneficial parts of the earth to suit their own attributes.

Another newly released game, but one I've played before. I sat down with regular gaming buddies Al, Miguel and Gary for this area control worker placement game, in space.

In our previous game, Al raided everyone in turn two and paid for it for the rest of the game, so there was a little bit of stigma attached t othat action - who would be first to attack?! My comedy highlight of the day for me came in this when Al offered a bit of advice to Miguel. "Definitely time to raid mate, you need the resources" Miguel seemed unsure, but got talked in to it. Unfortunately, both Gary and I had the raid protection cards, so Miguel took a good chunk of resources - from Al. Hahaha!

We got a bit worred about Al charging off to a commanding lead, but as I then pointed out, ust like in our previous game, the early leader was caught. Miguel was then in front, with me trailing behind in dead last. Again, like before, the guy in last came through for the win, as I was able to get on to the Terraforming Station action for my second run at that action, just at the right time to block Miguel. Then some good use of the 1 less sun wafer action let me manipulate the dice quite a lot to let me use the Colonist Hub and Colony Construction actions to get a lot of things on the board quickly to win.

Dave 8, Miguel 7, Gary 7, Al 7.

Straight in to another game with Al, Gary and Miguel. All but Gary had played this before, so setup was not too difficult. Most of Martin Wallaces games are hits with the group(s) I play with and this is no exception - although I think I might like Great Fire of London slightly better, hard to say!

Anyway, I took a bit of a high risk 3 loan strategy in this game and managed to have quite a few areas of London controlled, some powerful VP cards stashed away early and the poverty cubes well under control (The Loss cubes from automobile transported back in time, it seems).

The game looked pretty close all the way through and it was really hard to tell who was winning. That's gotta be a good thing.

Later in the game I became the transport king as I had the Underground running and also the 2 omnibuses in front of me. Sadly for me though, the gamble with loans did not pay off. There was a shortage of high income cards available at the end of the game and I was a few quid short of paying back another loan, which would have got me the win.

Al 50, Miguel 49, Me 46, Gary 35.

Then we had a go at Small World, with the "Be Not Afraid" Expansion. Keith and Ron joined Al Gary and I for a trip over the 5 player map. We'd not played with these new races and powers before, so I shuffled them all into the top half of the pile from the base game to make sure we got a look at all of them.

That being said, I drew Pillaging Orcs and had them the whole game, with their +2VP per conquered region ability. I was scoring a steady 9vp each turn, which I hoped might get me the edge over everyone else who chose to decline. Unfortunately, Al had Fortified Leprecauns first up and those pots of gold won him a few extra VPs where people couldn't or wouldn't get to him to steal them in time. The new races and powers look fun and this game has plenty of legs with the expansions adding many more possible combinations.

All that new stuff in one day left us looking for something more familiar, so with plenty of players left, we had a go at Endeavour. Again, Keith, Al, Gary Ron and I were the players.

I had a terrible game! Really hard work. I am sure that was down to Ron picking on me in europe by attacking me every time I looked like getting established there. That meant I had no cards from Europe, I had chosen the building ability first so had no ships early on and I seemed to be behind from then on. The 4 of us who play together regularly seemed to drop in to some squabbling and this left Keith to ease away for the win. Didn't that happen before? Ah yes, Dominant Species!

In the end, I was able to dominate one region and drew some decent cards
from there and coupled with a couple of attacks in the last turn of the game, I built up a couple of decent enough chains, but we were all way behind the winner.

Keith 60, Me 43, Ron 41, Gary 40, Al 37.

First game of the day; And the first time I'd used the new factions of Fallen Kingdoms and Vanguards. A close fought game, which I thought was going my way, until my Vanguard summoner got chomped up by a mean looking Elut-Bal beastie.

The new decks were great; and re-affirms Summoner Wars as a really fun, tense high speed game.

I'd not seen this one before.

A simple team game of trying to get another player to arrange a few blocks of coloured wood into a specified pattern. The additional problem is that you are not allowed to use any form of language or gestures other than the 'cave-person' type ones provided with the game. A fun party game for half-an-hour or so, and my apologies to anyone in the room who may have been distracted from their game by outbursts of 'UBUNGU! UBUNGU!' and head thumping with plastic clubs.

I've been trying to catch up with these lists after spending an enjoyable Saturday at Pasteboard and Plastic XIV jogged my memory (Why didn't I do it these at the time?!). The day started with this one as far as I recall. I was keen to see if the 18xx format translated well into ancient seafaring and it did...up to a point. I really enjoyed the game but still yearned for it to be about railways. Also played Industry and did reasonably well at it if my memory isn't faulty. After lunch I teamed up with the Payne family and played several games of Dominion (with cards from all the expansions I think), Kingsburg and Stone Age. All very enjoyable indeed. I also played Munchkin (with Mike Bliss and others) but I don't think we really got to grips with this zany little game despite its absurdity appealing to my sense of humour. It suffered somewhat from being played at the supper stage of the evening when minds were on other things I think. All in all another very enjoyable Saltdean day for me.
