I was asked by a friend who works at a local academic bookstore in Princeton to create a list of 10 games they could stock for the Christmas season. My eyes immediately lit up and my brain started churning.

The store is across from Princeton University and serves the school as the university bookseller. It is also the most popular community bookstore, focusing on literature and academic writing (philosophy, history, political science, religion, languages, economics, etc.).

I have included some games and why I think they should join the inventory. Please provide your own thoughts for listed games. Also, include your own game if you think it should be included for consideration.

I actually thought of this game rather early. Can easily be marketed to a crowd that may already be fans of games like Chess and Go. Many similarities with this and Chess could be drawn. If anyone gets to look at the pieces, they should be impressed. The price is low enough to spurn an impulse buy even for someone who is not a board game player.

Can't avoid a game as widely recognized as this one. Marketing this edition would be an attempt to catch buyers that may already own the original or are intrigued by an edition they are not familiar with. Also, I could market it as an edition that plays much better than the original without expansions.

Thought about Carc. the City as well, but the much higher price tag is a deterrence I think.

Customers familiar with literature may be captured by the theme. Furthermore, the 'cooperative' with traitor gameplay could be marketed as a unique experience. Also, it is Days of Wonder, the same company that makes Ticket to Ride (which they may have heard of).

Cons: Price tag for DoW is very high.

Should I just go with TtR or even Small World instead?

I want to include one pure Co-op game as I would like to try and include a variety of games. This seems to be the most widely marketable with a good price tag. However, I could go even cheaper with Forbidden Island instead. I think Pandemic's theme works a little better though. And Forbidden Island looks more like a stocking stuffer than a full fledged Christmas present (does that mean it would sell better or worse?).

A more intelligent version of Yatzee that simulates the development of a civilization. Very easy to explain the concept. Very accessible as it is easily compared to a game almost everyone has played. Plus those dice and wooden player boards are just so cool. High price tag for something so small, but still much cheaper than a DoW game (and not THAT much more expensive than a brand new book (avg. 15-20 dollars in this store).

May be recognized by some. Can be marketed by the most popular game by today's most popular European style game designer. 'Former' (and future?) top game on a user reviewed website dedicated to the board game hobby.

Maybe I should think about Bohnanza instead (also?). I hesitate to include too many card games, though their low price may induce people to 'throw them in' with another purchase. Unlikely to happen with Agricola.

Great 2-player card game by the most prolific designer in our hobby. Can be compared to Poker. Can be compared to games like Rummy. It might be better to use Lost Cities, which seems to sell better. But I just like this one so much more.

Cons: 2-player.

Another German Game of the Year. Alhambra has set collection elements of Rummy combined with tile placement (which will be familiar to Carc players but unique for most). Another very accessible game with a reasonable price tag. That German Game of the Year emblem just jumps off the box as well.

The reference of this game to the Spanish city Alhambra may catch the eye of an upper class customer base that is likely very widely traveled.

This series is just awesome. My hesitation to include it is that a local toy story also carries games in this series. This may mean, however, that people have seen it before. For some reason I think the Africa edition will catch people's interest. Can be compared to Racko and Rummy, games people may have played before. Game that can be played by kids as well, which is a big plus. Kids games may be something I need to look at more for this list (which is also growing uncontrollably).

Very simple game that could be played by the whole family. I think Abstracts would work in this environment. Can be marketed as an educational game as well. I thought about including something from the GIPF series, but this just seems so much more widely marketable. Colorful as well (looks are always a plus) with a catchy cover (and name).

I always thought this game would be an ideal fit for a literary bookstore environment. Ancient classics, poetry, romance, a foreign culture, attractive art - it's all there.

Storytelling game. "Best New Party Game" by Games Magazine. This one seems an obvious fit for me. When I look at lists of brilliant games of the past few years, this seems to come up over and over. Plus, it is a party game. Much more marketable. With the right salesperson, this could work splendidly.
