30 days have passed since my first trip to Essen Spiel and it has been a crazy month. At Essen I ended up buying 8 new games (I include London; even though it has been sent to me, I count it as one of my Essen purchases).
8 new games! I've never bought that many games all at once before, so who knew I would buy another 4 games the past couple of days!
In a single month I bought 20% of my collection! Even I myself have to get used to the idea of me buying that many games.
But I think I did very well as I have played 8 of these 12 already and most of them multiple times! Only 1 game fell flat, the rest were all really good! 4 games are still unplayed, hopefully I get the change to bring these to the table soon, as well; one of these is on it's way to me by mail, so it probably doesn't even count as unplayed, right?.
This list serves the purpose of reminding myself I'm a game player, not just a collector. And to make sure I don't make a habit out of this kind of behaviour, too. And -last but not least- to brag about all the cool games I got, of course!

I had played Dixit before and I really like it, although I think of it more as a fun activity, rather than a game. My girlfriend especially liked it, so I decided to buy her a copy as a gift and have it signed by the illustrator, Marie Cardouat. She did the best job with a very nice drawing and made me the coolest boyfriend ever. I Never thought giving a game to my girlfriend would go over so well...

Last month, we've played 2 games of Dixit and it truly is one of the best games to play with people who don't usually play games and who are a bit creative. I still rate Dixit a 7.

I also bought Sobek at the Asmodee stand. It's cheap and I really like Jaipur, another lighter card game in a similar box by the same publisher, so I figured I couldn't really regret buying it.

I've played it twice already and it is a fun, light card game. It reminds me a bit of Guilotine, but with a little bit more options to it. It serves very well as a quick filler game: easy to teach, quick and fun to play. I rate Sobek a 6.

I almost bought Abandon Ship, once before, but I quickly put it back on the shelves when I saw they charged € 36 for it. That's a lot of money for a simple filler, no matter how over-produced.
The AEG stand had a big sale of the German copy: Verlasst das Schiff for only € 10. I tried it and I bought it.

I have a soft spot for dice game fillers and this is a great one. We already played it 4 times. A bit of bluffing, hidden player colours, a bit of screwage and rolling a lot of dice. I rate Abandon Ship a 6.

Inca Empire is the first game I pre-ordered leading up to Essen Spiel. I read the rules and it truly looked like the kind of game I seem to like nowadays. Especially the parasitic network building and the interesting card play got me hooked and the new artwork by my favorite artist, Alexandre Roche, was a great plus as well. And I'm a fan of the added bonus cards; the marketing people probably had me in mind when they came up with this...

I've played it once and I really loved it. It's a long game, longer than I expected, and it's a heavy game as well. There's just a lot going on. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest playing this, but only with 4p. I think a lot of the subtleties of the card play will be lost with just 3 players. I rate Inca Empire an 8.

Along with Inca Empire, I pre-ordered Norenberc. Another game that looked to suit my tastes according to the rules. It also helps it comes with a lot of nice wooden components and, again, the bonus tiles.

I haven't got around to playing it, unfortunately.

This game quickly got on my radar, based on the amazing artwork, again, by Alexandre Roche. After the rules were put online, it was quickly pre-ordered. I think this is the better implementation of the dice allocation from Yspahan. I tried to like Yspahan, but the overseer/caravan part just doesn't work for me.

If Troyes is indeed the better game remains to be seen. Unfortunately, this one is also unplayed. There is a lot of hype apparently, so it shouldn't be too hard to get it to the table someday.

Isla Dorada has been on my radar for quite a while, also because it features some great artwork. You could fool people saying it's from the latest Pixar movie, it's that good. Luckily the gameplay looked like a lot of fun too and another game got pre-ordered. Players are part of an expedition team and you want to find more treasures than everybody else. You have to auction off the right to move the single expedition teams pawn to the location of your choice. This results in a nice interaction.

Isla Dorada is a big hit. After 3 plays, I rate it a 9 and quickly settled in my top 10. Everybody I've introduced it too has enjoyed it a lot. There's screwage, bluffing, hidden information, constant interaction, beautiful components and simple mechanics. What's not to like?

Both Steam and Brass went over really well with me and I wanted to try some more Martin Wallace games. London looked like a great fit, different from the ones I've tried, a bit lighter and therefore probably easier to get to the table as well. In the end I didn't buy The Great Fire of London 1666, but these two games would make a nice combo at game night.

London has really impressed me so far. I've played it two times and the second play was in all aspects a more enjoyable game. This game, like most card games, has a learning curve and the structered card deck makes for quite a strategic game. Mistakes were made in the first game, but it still went over well. The second game we had a more focused game and it got even better. I love the relative poverty scoring! I rate London an 8.

I got home from Spiel and decided that 8 games should keep me occupied for quite a while. Then I found out about this big sale...
I just couldn't pass up on Le Havre for only € 23. The flesh is weak.

Luckily, Le Havre is a great game. We tried the 2p short version twice and it's a great resource management game. I wish more games would include a short version. I love it can be played in one hour, but it's great when teaching the game as well. The first time when playing a game this deep mistakes will be made, who wants to be stuck with them for three hours? I will eventually try the full game, but the short game is already quite a tense and challenging game. I rate Le Havre an 8.

I set my mind on ordering Le Havre and I added this to my order to get a discount on shipping. For € 5 more I had an extra game. Add to basket, check-out.

Boy, did I regret buying this. We slogged through our play and all I could think about was how I rather would have bought a nice sandwich or whatever. What a tedious game: turns take ages for a game this light, the iconography doesn't work, the rulebook is poorly written. I rate Roma a 4.

Everything I've read about Tammany Hall sounds great. I like to play games with some direct confrontation with my friends, but I felt my collection lacked that type of game. I learned it's almost OOP and I got an unexpected financial benefit, so I tracked down a copy through the BGG Marketplace.

The second edition really looks great and I can't wait to slander my friends when we all get together again to play games in two weeks time.

As I said before, I'd like to try some more games by Martin Wallace and this truly looks like an interesting game, with the cooperation-confrontation balanced gameplay. Almost every week, the three of us come together to play games so the 3p player count fits the bill as well.
I came across a fair-priced copy, again in the BGG Marketplace, so I ordered it, right after checking my account balance...

With my gamegroup we play fairly regularly and try to play each game at least a couple of times, so I'll try to be patient before I get this game to the table, to be able to play all the other games we've only just started playing a bit more, like Brass and Chicago Express. I'm not in a hurry, I'm still waiting for it to arrive by mail and when it finally ets here there's a big rulebook to work my way through!
