One year ago I'd never heard of Settlers of Catan and if I'd been asked to name a board game would have gone for one of Monopoly, Risk or Cluedo... or possibly Diplomacy, just to make myself look intellectual.

Twelve months on and I'm a thorough convert and am preaching the new gaming faith to anyone who'll listen (and with some success too). This list contains the games that have brought me this far, and I can't wait to continue the voyage of discovery in 2011.

I opened Catan on Christmas day and was almost wondering whether this would be a misfiring present, since I've hardly played a board game for years. A 3-way "team" game with 2 players on each team may not be the best introduction, but with 6 players in the room it was the best way the un-expanded maths worked.

Over the past year I think I've convered at least 10 people to the game and since it's so easy to learn and enjoyable for new players I'll keep bring it to the table.

Scotland Yard was a birthday present received soon after Catan. It was a couple of months before we were able to play it, since I didn't like the idea of my first play being 2-player, and although initially it didn't grab me in the way Catan did it's now one of my other favourite new player games.

I heard the name Carcassone before knowing anything about it, so I went and bought it anyway. One of favourite 2-player light games, and the girlfriend likes it too. I've yet to venture into expansion packs as I'm still enjoying a bit of passive-agressive meeple placing in its original form.

Dominion was recommended to me and hasn't had as much table time as I'd have liked. Shockingly, I've only played it 2-player so far (and enjoy that quite a bit) so will have to make an effort to get some larger games in, and maybe some expansions, over the next 12 months.

Along with the Dominion recommendation I was also told about Space Hulk. Unfortunately, spikey little alien figures may bring out the geek-child in me but it really didn't do that for my girlfriend so this is easily weighing in at the top end of the most-expensive-game-per-play table.

Reading about the Catan dice game lead me to "To Court The King". Doesn't get a lot of table time as it's not been that popular 2-player, and I haven't tried it with more.

Again, though, it's immensely preferable to a game of Yahtzee.

Having discovered that there's more to life than euros, I thought I'd try one of the lighter wargames out there. Even if this is an introduction to the genre it's been a bit of a contrast to most of the other games so far, possibly with the exception of Space Hulk.

The other half really isn't a fan and so far it's been most useful for getting her to play almost any other game if I phrase the question as a "we could play Richard III or [insert game X]".

On the same night as Small World I got in a game of K2. It had me hooked and I've played it half a dozen times now with non-gamers - one of whom went out and bought it himself straight afterwards. It seems I'm tending to like games with a mixture of theme and mechanics.

Four very patient experience players introduced two new players to the game, and to be honest we spent most of the time wondering what was going on. I probably played more like a cylon when I was a human and more like a human when I was a cylon. I like the theme and think I should enjoy it a second time, but often it's a choice of one game of BSG vs two or three others in an evening. While I'm sampling pastures new I haven't played it a second time yet.

Everyone else at London on Board seemed to be playing it, so I joined in. Interesting, although it didn't hook me. I'll have to give it another try before deciding for sure but I think the theme is a bit too loose and the player interaction a bit lacking for me. Even if K2 doesn't have direct competition (except for spaces) I enjoy laughing at other climbers that are near to death.

Beowulf followed the first play of London. I was only becoming aware of Reiner Knizia's huge body of work at the time and the main thing I've taken from this is just how impressively he can create varied games using what seem to be simple mechanics. Although on the face of it the theme doesn't seem to be strongly present the way the player has to keep taking risks actually does get across some of the feeling of performing feats of bravery for increasing rewards.

Another London on Board play, not really helped by the fact that it was everybody's first time at the game. As a one-against-many game like Scotland Yard there's a lot that I should like about it but it was quite complex and requires much more strategy than the older game. Will definitely need a second attempt.

I may not be able to get many games of Space Hulk in, but Death Angel's solitaire play offers one way to get the alien-shooting fix and while away an hour or so.

I'm starting to find that although I like a bit of randomness in games, whether through dice or cards, in Death Angel it's a bit too much "all or nothing" for me.

The reprint of "I'm the Boss" has set the London on Board group alight and I think has to be the most-requested game over the past month. One year ago I would have had the impression that board games can be demoralising if you're not the one winning but "I'm the Boss" is consistently great fun no matter how badly I do. It's a real demonstration of how much a game can be generated from player interaction.

Although very euro, this plays fast enough to be quite good fun. Any game that leaves you thinking "oh, if only I'd kept X card instead of Y" is usually a good one. Maybe my attention span is too short, but if a game doesn't ask me to set aside three hours then it's much more likely to get played.
