Grimwold's new-to-you geeklists are the highlight of my month on the 'geek. They motivate me to review the new games I've played (and recycle my entries as comments), and they allow me to read the thoughts of some of the most insightful 'geeks on new and classic games.

But the new-to-me list is inevitably full of first impressions. I'm interested in hearing how those games that seemed so great at the time stood up to multiple plays. Did you actually play them that much after the first month? Did a game you dismissed at the time turn out to be better in retrospect?

Add an entry with the same game you chose for the New to you Jan 10 geeklist. Link to your entry in that geeklist, then write down your thoughts on the game you chose a year on. If your impression of some of the other games you wrote up that month have changed, let us know about that too.

The big games that month were Hansa Teutonica and Power Grid: Factory Manager - have they stood the test of time?

I'll be starting these lists mid-month, so we don't have to keep up with this list and Grimwold's (and several other monthly ones) all at the same time. You can subscribe to the announcement thread for reminders.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark: Unfortunately, I have not played this since, so, it's been a year. This is one of the things that puts me off buying this game, I cannot see myself getting moneys' worth out of it, because it is hard to get to the table. I am still interested in it, but as far as the test of time goes, the test is postponed for now.

221B Baker Street: The Master Detective Game: I still plays this here and then, because it is a super-light Sunday afternoon game and my girlfriend likes it although we are both sometimes frustrated with the weird old trivia clues. So, it definitely did not stand the test of time as it has only been played a few times since and now that we have Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective: The Thames Murders & Other Cases and Orient Express, this one will have a hard time getting an outing at all

Pandemic: The first big disappointment since I got back into boardgaming and I learned it the hard way. Bought this blindly due to hype, recommendations and the cooperative player aspect but very quickly became disinterested when I noticed that there is actually not much of a game in there. Solvable and boring. The test of time blew this into smithereens, I have traded it away since.

Shadow Hunters was my #1 game for January of 2010, and after 11 additional plays throughout the year, it stayed strong to become my #1 game of Overall 2010. This game is a ton of fun packed into a 30-60 minute playtime. There is a lot of deduciton & accusations, but manages to keep the game on a lighter foot than traitor deduction games, which can erupt. Every time this game is played, the players end the game with talk about how the game went and what they knew and didn't know, as well as aspirations to play the game again soon (and sometimes immediately afterward)

Cutthroat Caverns was my 2nd place game for January 2010, and it has been played a couple more times since the initial play, but has fizzled out very quickly. It is a fun game, but with a little too much luck on the card draw, and the rounds end when the players run out of reaction cards to keep the round going. This game has gone to my trade pile

Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper took 3rd place for my new January games, and I remember it being pretty good fun, but it just hasn't captured our interest enough to get to the table again. I'll have to push this one for another play and see how it holds up.

Last January was a great month (I will be lucky to break 10 plays of any game this month with only 1 new game). A very strong game with a couple of OK games and then some sucky games.

Quote:
Kingsburg

This is hands down the best new game to me played this month. Probably the best new game to me since Stone Age or Small World. It has everything I like in a game. I am sure by the middle of next month I will break out the Expansion and include that when I play it.
We played the heck out of this for the next few month. I agree with what I said then that it is one of the best games I had played for a while. I got to play it again in December and actually didn;t enjoy it that much but I blame that on it being a learning game for 3 other people who play games extremely slowly. It did make my wife and I want to play it some more.

Quote:
FITS

I really enjoyed FITS. We played it as a pickup game while my brother-in-laws played a 150 minutes game of Stone Age (Yeah you heard me right). Everyone enjoyed it. It gets frustrating (just like Tetris) but I will happily play this game any time
We played this as a filler game for the next few months and I would be happy to get it out again. It plays very quickly and you can explain it quickly. A brainburner without distracting from being able to socialize.

Quote:
Eat Poop You Cat

Everyone enjoyed this. We played it with people my age and in one of the games we even let a 10 year old play with us. We all laughed so hard. We got edgy, but not too edgy (except when playing with the 10 year old when we kept it clean) and it just worked. This will get played a lot.
People still ask for this when we get together. I like that we have played it with teenagers as well as the adults. I want to try Telestrations, but Iam worried it will fall flat against this free game.

Quote:
Mexican Train

I will play this game when neighbours are over, as they like it. That is all I can really say about a dominoes game. It fills in some time and we can chat while playing.
Yeah, our friends took this too seriously and frustrated with their draw. It's dominoes... Fine not playing it ever.

Quote:
Scrabble SLAM!

This is one if we just want to be loud and frantic for 10 minutes. Not a bad waste of time and cheap enough to not worry about the money spent on it. Fun. I like words though. Loudest person wins!
Hasn't been played since. Definitely a 'feh' type of game. Not terrible but still nothing worth going out the way for.

Quote:
Archaeology: The Card Game

Got this for Christmas from my buddy, and we played it at work one lunchtime. I like this as a lunchtime time filler game. It was a lot of fun. Definitely the best of the fillers we played this month.
This got played at work a lot, and Heather even enjoyed it enough that we whipped it out a bit. I think it needs to get played some more.

Quote:
Dominion

So I bought this game to learn it and explain it to my neighbour who bought it or christmas and couldn't get his head around it. I also thought my wife and I would play it enough to justify it. After 2 plays I thought it was simply OK but my wife disliked it enough to say she probably will not play this again. I will get it out to teach to new poeple if the wife isn't there. This shouldn't get the plays that everyone else seems to get from it.
I actually got to really like this game after playign it a few more times. Unfortunately the wife was really put off with our first couple of plays. If I could have her enjoy it a little then this one would hit the table each Thursday with our Power Grid game night with Mike.

Quote:
Sequence for Kids

So we play Sequence a little and this seemed liek a good gateway to more advanced game for my 5 year old. He liked it but seemed to just like to play the last card he got, rather than really goign for his Sequences. I want to continue to play this and see if he can get what this game really is about.
Elijah didn't really like this game. I need to try again and see if he enjoys it more. He's 6 now and although not ready for something like Memoir or such he might like something like this more now.

Homesteaders was actually my #3 choice last year... but I recall thinking it might deserve the top spot and my notes back that up:

Homesteaders seems like it could be the long term favorite on this list... but as I've only been able to try the 2 player variant with my wife so far (Dungeon Lords was deemed brighter and shinier on game night...) so I haven't been able to see it in its 3-4 player glory. Its a tight resource management Euro where you build your resource/point engine via auction... if you like that sort of thing (and I do) you will enjoy playing this!

Over time I've just enjoyed playing this more and more (3 and 4 player is indeed glorious ) and it has crept into my top ten mostly due to featuring my favorite auction mechanism. Hopefully the publishing company's success with Eminent Domaine will lead to another printing of this fine game so people can stop avoiding it due to component issues and enjoy it for the great auction/resource conversion game it is!

Dungeon Lords was my favorite "grown up" game last year and its something I wish I could have played more than the 4 times I have since then... but being a bit longish and requiring exactly 4 players to be really good it just doesn't get to the table all that often. It also might be more "fiddly" than "deep" so I don't think it will ever be a favorite... but has enough going for it to make it a good change of pace when the stars align to get it played.

Last year's top pick: Okay... Go Away Monster wasn't the best new game I played this month... but it was the first my 20 month old daughter has ever played with me... so it was pretty exciting for me laugh

This is still my favorite kids game to play with my daughter (though her current favorite game is "Spooks" ie: Dungeon Lords... she loves playing with all the great components!) and it is always fun to introduce to a young child. New big sister may be outgrowing this one just a bit already... but new little sister will be ready to throw monsters in about a year and a half so I'll be getting a lot more use out of this in the next couple of years than either game above!

Last Year: Terra Prime seems like it should be a good game... but my one 2 player game was uncompetitively lopsided so I didn't get a good feel for the full game (though we both had fun all the same).

A combination of length, fiddliness and to some degree lack of interaction kept this from really making a mark on my local group and I eventually sent it to someone who will get some use out of it in math trade. Not our cup of tea... but the combination of elements here would make it a real gem for the right group.

My wife bought me this for X-mas 09. It's been played maybe four times and has spent the rest of the year on the shelf. I liked it, but my wife thought it was too tedious, too frustrating, and too dry. Same with Power Grid. Stone Age has been a much better hit so far.

That was then:

Quote:
January 2010 was a great month for new games for me. This was in part due to Cancon and in part due to trying out friend's Christmas presents.

Municipium

Only one play but it played very, very well. Lots of options and a some very nice components. This game is well worth a try if you get the chance.

Chaos in the Old World

Also only one play, but very enjoyable. The different chaos powers were all rather fun. High qulaity miniatures and a good flow of play. The map is abit confusing with colours that are too similar, but apart from that no complaints. Would play again!

Farmer of the Moor

Only one play of this expansion so far. The horse pieces are rather fun and the options that the expansion gives add to the Agricola experience. A little fiddly, but worth the effort.

Space Hulk

Copyright issues aside, this is a good silly game. The miniatures, board and other components are very good quality and the game plays very well. Five plays and five losses and I'm still keen!

Railroad Tycoon

I'm not a huge train gamer, but this was quite good. It will take a few plays to get across this but may be worth the effort.

Chinatown

A reasonable game. Not one for anyone who dislikes negotiation or requires structured negotiation.

Thurn and Taxis

Not a terrible game, but not the greatest game I have played either. The theme is, to my mind, less than exciting.

Space Alert

Three plays and that's about it for me with Space Alert. Really more a problem solving game with no chance to react and respond. Some fun mechanics but too much like Robo Rally (lay out your moves and execute them regardless of how useful or otherwise they may be) for my tastes.

This is now:

Cancon is yet to happen (it's this weekend - yay!) so I anticipate getting to try a bunch of new games as well as making a slew of purchases either as delayed Xmas presents or early birthday presents.

Of this lot I have not played any of the games I was lukewarm about (Space Alert, Thurn and Taxis, Chinatown or Railroad Tycoon) again in the last 12 months.

I have only dabbled with Space Hulk and the miniatures have been pushed to the back of a l-o-n-g painting queue.

I liked Chaos in the Old World but have not played it again. I have a few under-played four player games (Successors & Conan spring to mind)that I want to get on the table so have not seriously considered purchasing this one just yet.

I have ordered Farmers of the Moor and anticipate picking it up at Cancon and if I can find Municipium for cheap I'll also get that at Cancon.

The real 'winner' for me is Farmers of the Moor - mainly because my wife and I enjoy playing two player and welcome new decks & variants and we can usually get a game in after we've put the little one to bed, so this is something that will get used.

Alas, being a time-poor parent I just don't get that much of a chance to play multi player games.

Link to Best new game Jan, 2010 here.

Finca is still a very good game. It has lost none of its appeal after 25 plays, if anything it is better.

If Wishes Were Fishes. I am still debating getting this one. Although I have only played it 3 times the desire to play it again is just as much now as it was then.

Ice Flow. I still also find this one as appealing now as I did then. At that time I had played it once. Now I have played it 5 times.

Magdar. I have not thought much about this game since I do not own it. I would definitely play it again, however.

The Adventurers. I might actually like this game a little bit more now, after 15 plays than I did then. It is still not one of my most loved games, though.

Last year's January

Um. I haven't played any of these since, I believe. Campaign Manager in particular stands out as lousy.

To elaborate:

Masters Gallery is counter-intuitive and dry. I've got many better card games at that length.

Loyang is overlong, irritating, and in some sense a bad bad relative of Jambo, lacking all reasonable arc -- beginning, LOOOONG middle, no end.

Can't Stop I'd happily play again, it's a decent game, but I'm not really missing it.

Day & Night I'd like to try again, actually.

Campaign Manager 2008 is a card game designed by folks who I'm really surprised didn't get that "draw more cards" is a really powerful effect in card games of this type, which means 1) there aren't that many decks to draft 2) play is not very fun.

Played a grail I own for the first time last january. I was the only one of four players who liked Full Metal Planete. Liked it even well enough to be my game of the month. I took it along to a couple of geekbuddies some time later and we all had a blast. I remember stating 'it's a great once a year experience game'. I hope to play it again somewhere this year, probably not with my hometown crowd.

The game that probably should have gotten my 'new-to-me' award (because I liked it even better) was Roads and Boats. But I did a sologame a couple of months earlier, so it felt like cheating to call it 'new-to-me'. It got played once more as well last year.

Other new-to-me's that month I don't own, and I haven't played 'm again: Hispania (a tough Brittania like game) and Wallace's Rise of Empires (nice game, but there's better stuff in his War/Treefrog range.

This was my entry for January 2010. I bought a copy and had 3 plays in that month. I still own it and have played it twice more since, including one in January 2011. I really enjoy the game, but my wife felt a bit overdosed on it after 3 or 4 plays early on. She would also have liked to have painted minis, but sadly neither of us have had time to paint them yet.

A convention in January 2010 meant that I had a long list of new to me games, most of which have not stood the test of time so the only other game that's worth a mention is Alea Iacta Est - which is another that we don't own, but have played twice more since Jan 2010 with friends who own the game.
