Why not start right here at BoardGameGeek? E&T was the first game available here, but it seems there will be more... Auf Heller und Pfennig is already there, Goldland is currently in test-phase it seems.

The incomparable BrettSpielWelt. I selected Puerto Rico for this list because that's the game I play most there (and because the game is on virtually every list here ;-) ) but there's so much more: Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Princes of Florence, Tichu, Lost Cities, Transamerica, Dvonn... the list goes on and on. In German but English helpfiles available.
The only "live" gaming site that I know, all the others send you an e-mail when it's your turn.

Two ways to play this game online, and I'm frankly unhappy with both...

First, there's NetAquire, at http://members.cox.net/lornic/NetAcquire. I couldn't get it to work.

Then, there's PaulGames' Acquire, at http://www.geocities.com/twruder/acquire.html, which is beautifully and slickly made, even though it uses graphics and company names from the newest Hasbro/Avalon Hill release. It plays with open money and stock holdings. Problem is, all the users I've played against insist you play at blinding speed, and throw temper tantrums if you don't.

If you dig enough, you'll find an old DOS version of this game with decent (not great) AI. I like that the best, but it's not technically "online," so I suppose it's not relevant to this list...

Mafia played via bulletin board - come check it out! There are always several games going at once, ranging in size from 12 to 30+, some straightforward and some themed, for example, I just got killed in a "Discworld" game and a "Three Musketeers" theme is due to start soon. It's tons of fun and, as they say, the more the merrier!

Yes, it's available at BSW, but it's also at http://settlers.cs.northwestern.edu/. I like this NW site better, because the programmer developed it as a project in AI. Meaning: it has computer opponents! They're not bad either, considering the relative complexity of the game in terms of having to code AI.

Of course, it supports chat and gobs of online play, so if you have three other humans, you don't have to face AI if you don't want to.

Because it's online, it plays much faster, too; you'll probably blow through a game in about 45-60 minutes, especially if you play solo. And even with four humans, the longest games take 90 minutes.

The lag is sometimes annoying, but all things considered, this is a great way to build up your Settlers chops, while not having to deal with brats who insist you play at the speed of light.

If extraterrestrials play board games, Hex is perhaps the most likely human game they play, due to the simplicity of the ruleset. Get in on the ground floor!

Hex can be played for free on:

Playsite http://www.playsite.com/
10x10, 14x14, and 18x18 grids offered. By far the most popular Hex server. The "flat" board view can be flipped so that White border rows are top & bottom. The window does not resize, which makes 18x18 ridiculous.

Ludoteka http://www.ludoteka.com/games.html has lots of Spanish players. Menus are available in Spanish, English, or Basque! 11x11 grid. The "diamond" board display obviates flipping. They also offer Unlur, another connection-type game.

http://www.jatek.hu is a Hungarian server. Not very easy to figure out how to play. They call Hex "Hìd" there. Almost no one plays it anymore. Not recommended.

Looney Labs' Aquarius can be played online at http://www.wunderland.com/WTS/Kory/JavaGames/Javaquarius.

It takes awhile to load and it is solo-only, but is a superb engine with scalable graphics for both the "Table" and your hand of cards, as well as the ability to play against 1-3 AI opponents, who are surprisingly well programmed to be unpredictable enough to make things interesting.
