Being in Oz the prices of games can be 15-30% higher here then bringing them from overseas so I'm going to be doing another game order and I thought I'd explain how I decide to purchase games and get some confirmation and/or advice.

Basically I'm a reasearcher and it drives the mrs nuts. I have been after a new TV and amplifier/receiver but have been doing the research for 2 years now! So research for games is similar (althought the timeframe is shorter)

I basically look at the Normal average rating of the games here on the geek, read the comments and user reviews, session reports and then apply modifiers on this info and the following

Educational-whether I think it would be good to teach little ones stuff
Wife Friendly-self explanotory
Gateway-our gaming group is small so if I can use it too introduce to other friends etc it could be useful
Game Group loves-get comments from my guys to see if they are interested or not

I also weight player numbers and game time the best rated games are those that are 2 player minimum that scales well, 30-45 minutes being an optimum game time for non-gamers and 1-1.5 hours fro gaming group

(Really I'm not that anal)

I then categorise the games as follows-to be honest the real reason I do this is I probably get to buy more games

Board, Tile, Racing, Card, Dexterity, Kids, Sports, Dungeon, Abstract, War, Auction, Party

OK to show I am not so anal this game is like one of the lower ranked games out of my analysis-cons are needs three players and plays in 2 hours but it just sounds like it is dripping in theme, which me and my buddies like, and just reminds me of the great GW games that I played when I was younger.

The other board game I am keen on getting is El Grande but I am waiting for the reprint

The mrs loves Carc H&G, as do I and the little fella has fun putting the tiles together and playing with the pieces. As the better half wants another one from the series, I was going to get Castle but a quick tip from Kevin Wood saying that City was "meatier" and that it scales well convinced me to go this way.

The other alternative is Carc: Castle. I would welcome comments on one or the other

OK I would love a racing game in my collection. I reckon it would be a load of fun especially as beer is the beverage of choice during game play. With a time limit on moves I think this provide the right amount of stress, geeing up and sledging. Maybe a race game with some screwage mechanism might be better.

The other thing is I do not have a table that is big enough for this (1.5m x .8m) although the wife has told me we will be getting one soon (News to me luv)

Alternatives in order of my ranking are Turf master, Ave Caeser, Royal Turf. Would welcome comments

Again a whole lot of fun, the little fella would love it and would suit our small abode. The only problem is the best I can get it for is 30 euro plus shipping-is it really worth this much?

Alternatives Crockinole (very hard to get in Oz), Zopp and spinball

The more I think about it the more I would right off dexterity games and just go out the back and play some cricket

This is a must. I played it on BSW and the more I played the more fun I had. I was looking for a game that progressed from Backgammon which the mrs and I love. Castiglione suggested this and I think it could be a winner.

The guys and I love Talisman, Dungeon, etc but time is a rare commodity. This looks so elegant, full of theme, challenging and over a short time frame and designed by a guy that surfs its gotta be cool. This will not be cheap to get but..

Alternative is Phantasy Realm. Would welcome comments and comparisons

Well abstracts aren't my favorite but got this for my nephew and it was an instant hit with all and sundry. I think it is a great educational game for young ones, easy to teach making, it a great gateway game and is fun to play. Funnily enough this is cheaper to by in Oz so my LGS will be getting the funds for this.

Alternatives are Ynish and Through the desert
