Hi everyone

One of my favourite geeklists from 2010 was

Games that FIRED other Games....

And if you never have, you should. These things are fun and fun is good.

But my one problem with that list is that it's all BACKWARDS! It should have been

Games that ***GOT FIRED BY*** other games...

Because when I am looking at a game page, I want to go down to the Geeklists section and see what other game(s) HAVE FIRED IT! (Then I can buy them instead ninja)

So in a bid to correct this situation (not to mention a blatant rip off) I'll see if we can't create the "Geeklist that should have been"....

Fired 1812: The Invasion of Canada.

1812 is fun, but 1775 is just completely wild. Battles from turn one, command decisions are much more powerful, and better balanced overall. Every move requires extremely careful planning, lest you leave your position exposed.

So far I've seen a 6-5 British win (it would have been a bigger margin, but there was no need to move the last British faction) and a 10-3 American win (and the US was down 6-1 at the end of Turn 1!).

Really, the only flaw in 1775 (base game) is that the area in RI, CT, MA, and NH are basically 80% of the action. Have not tried Siege of Quebec scenario yet.

Reason: biggest reason is it supports more than two players, plays quicker than TS (and around the same time as 1960 if you play CT with only 2), but also because the fiddliness has been almost completely eliminated and it's just so simple to grasp. It's also nice that you're not stuck at a specific point in time using real-world people. Yes, you're using current electoral votes circa 2016, but the nominees and such are all fictional, which I think will help give this game more staying power.

Personally, I feel the lack of tightness in RRT is what frees the players up to think grand strategy and not details. I much prefer thinking grand strategy than thinking details, but obviously, not everyone does.

(Of cours, some may say they want both, and that is fine, but in a two hour game, you can think just two hours, every minute spendt thinking details is one minute less for thinking grand strategy. And playing AoS, I spned way to many minutes thinking details. (Please note: I do NOT claim that AoS does not have grand strategy in it. It is just that it has to much of something else.)

Got fired by Volldampf

Board Game: Volldampf

Friends,

Lisa and I have owned Volldampf for a while now, but just got around to playing it a few nights ago (two-player). Great day in the morning - this is a good game! We played with the Age of Steam rule whereby a cube must stop at the first city of the same color, as we had heard that is the only way to play. This is much better for us for any sort of two-player cube-delivery/rail game experience. Volldampf quite literally fired Age of Steam, as it and all of our expansion maps are currently listed on eBay.

Now, if only Volldampf had an expansion map or two - To the drawing board.

Cheers,
Bob (& Lisa)

And Risk Express (aka same game).

Reason - Both are about Tactical (in the moment) dice placement. You weigh your options and go from there. What Roll does better is speeds up the end game, and lets you carry over from turn to turn.

I feel Age/Risk gets dry and grindy once people start to focus solely on stealing instead of ending the game.

Roll also plays up to 8 fast enough; untrue of Age/Risk

Was easily fired by:

From gallery of Zigihogan

Prêt-à-Porter is one of the very few worker placement Euro's that I will play no questions asked!

If players can get past the theme they will find a semi-heavy (by Euro standards) economic game that just happens to be around a fashion theme.

It is very funny to listen to our group (mostly males) sit around and say things like "I have to get this evening wear dress sewn before the next fashion show in Moscow!". It is quite entertaining.

Agricola was also fired by:

Dungeon Petz is the other worker placement Euro that is consistantly on the table. There is a lot to keep track of and do on your turns and the game (mostly the pets) are very unforgiving and they will just keep doing what they are doing no matter what your specific plans are.
