My wife LOVES boardgames, she wants to win . . .but she just doesn't "fight" for it.

She dislikes war games of any sort. not agressive enough to win.

She LOVES Zombies, Settlers of Zarahemla, and our most recient addition "Betrayal at the House on the Hill"

What other low contention or direct conflict, but still some what strategy games are out there?

There's little direct player interaction, but there's plenty of strategy and you can indirectly influence other players by your own card choices and tile purchases. Especially if you watch what currencies people are collecting and work out what buildings they're planning to buy.

We like it, and it's one of the games my Mum will play.

My experience is that most ladies like this game. Even if they think that gaming is just a waste of time.

And maybe later on they are easier convinced... for other boardgames.

This is perfect for her. She already knows Settlers, so that helps. There is very little interaction or confrontation that would require aggression. There's only one screw-over tile (pay two gold to steal a card from another player's hand), which is usually only used at the end game. The game is still challenging and fun with great components and a nice exploration and upgrade theme.

It seems like this makes every GeekList these days, but it's a fun, relatively light game. There's some strategy but little direct confrontation. As an added bonus, it's easy to learn and appropriate for a wide range of ages, so you could even pull it out with company.

This is an enjoyable game that can be played either aggressively or politely. There are several ways to score, so if a player is blocked in one area, there are always other options. And those camels are just too cute!

What about Bohnanza? It's a bean farming competition. I have played this game with 5 non-gamers, including some girls, and we all had fun.

The strategy in this game comes from managing your own money and balancing trade-offs, not from direct confrontation. About the meanest thing you can do is take a card your opponent probably wants. This is one of the big favorites in our gaming group.

It's out of print now, but you can still find copies in the stores if you look around.

This is meatier than Ticket to Ride but still not too confrontational. Again, the strategy is more about maximizing your own opportunities than hosing the other player(s).

This is also out of print but not impossible to find.

Almost like competitive double solitaire. I can't even think of anything aggressive one player could do towards the other.

or "Return of the Heroes," has plenty of combat, but you roll against your skill to hit and kill the monsters, and gain experience to improve your adventurers skills.

it is 1-4 players, so it plays solitaire; i have played solitaire twice, and it is very enjoyable and limited to 45 turns (under 1 hour) to complete your heroic quest and defeat the nameless.

the regular multiplayer game will probably run around 2-3 hours, but can probably run down to 1.5 easily hours with mastery of the rules. when playing this game, it reminds me of B@HoTH alot for some reason, and i think "why can't B@HoTH be more like this game?". i have both games, and love 'em both.

if your wife does not like any direct confrontation (ie a player rolling dice trying to harm her situation), then you will appreciate RoTH. my g/f has not played this one yet, but i played with her kids (12 girl 14 boy), and they loved it and have been asking to play more. a direct quote from the 12 year old girl, while we were playing last night was "these games you get are alway's so cool", which i thought was really cool. if you like B@HoTH and enjoy a very D&D like fantasy setting, you can't go wrong with "Return of the Heroes".

Balloon Cup is a gateway to aggressive strategy games. The theme is cutesy, but the gameplay requires aggressive tactics to win.
