Let me count the ways. Big boxes, little boxes, boxes with fancy latches, boxes with large compartments, everything a slightly (?) OCD gamer needs to keep the bits organized and ready for play (remember, the more time spent setting up and putting away, the less time spent playing).

Edit: Changed sort order to alphabetical for easier reference.

A dual-sided, 10 compartment Art divider box from Container Store ($4.99) to hold the dice, developments (each colour in its own compartment), and renown with 3 compartments to spare. A small Flambeau infinite divider box ($3.99 @ Container Store) to hold each denomination of money in its own row as well as a row of production tokens, with plenty of expansion room if necessary.

As I always try to do, each faction has its own baggie with the miniatures, faction deck, and starting money in it so I can just toss the baggies to the players and they'll be all set. Each individual side deck (black market goods, mercs, and YCU deck) is in its own baggie for quicker setup. Velvet bag holds the YCU power tokens.

5x Plano 3450 - one for each player (some of the city stuff is intermingled) and one for the community items and dice. The cubes are separate in the original baggies.

Without the insert, everything fits with the lid slightly raised.

The six-compartment Plano was originally seen in Daniel Thurot's excellent review.

I had plans to make custom cardboard boxes for all components, and even came as far as making a prototype box:
Board Game: Clash of Cultures

When that project didn't progess, I instead researched what dimensions of boxes are available from suppliers here in Norway. I ended up with four 20×11×3 cm boxes and one 23×16×6 cm one from the "Biltema" chain (originally a car accessory supplier). Together, these fill the entire 36 cm (inner) length of the box – as the hinges extend beyond the nominal measurements, the short edges of the inner box is forced slightly outwards, but not so much as to make the lid too tight. Similarly, they almost entirely fill the 6½ cm inner height of the box; when adding the rules and player boards, the lid does not close fully, but rests a millimeter or so above the edge of the inner box. There is a ca. 1 cm gap along each of the long sides.

From gallery of gjerde

From gallery of gjerde

The smaller boxes are divided into 3 rows, each subdivided into 4 compartments by removable dividers. To avoid squeezing, the soldiers need a triple compartment, and the fortresses a double. A double is also preferable for academies. Because I wanted the cubes and cardboard tokens to be included, I had to mingle the two smallest groups pairwise: settlers with ships, and settlements with ports. These could also have been split into settlements with settlers, and ports with ships. The cardboard tokens could arguably be kept in a small ziplock baggie on top of one of the other compartments (freeing up one compartment so that one of these pairs can be split), as they are taken out at the beginning of the game, and the main point of the box is to make everything easily available during the game.

From gallery of gjerde

The big box for the shared components turned out to have a shallow tray under the lid, with one large and four small compartments. This is extremely practical, as all the materials that should be available during the game fit there: mood tokens, culture tokens, exhaustion tokens and barbarian settlements fit in the small compartments (I store the turn marker together with the exhaustion tokens), the barbarian units, wonders (I use 3D-printed replacements) and dice fit in the large one. One of the three tuckboxes with cards separate these in two during transport; when setting up the game, both this and the dice are taken out.

From gallery of gjerde

The lower part of the box was divided in four compartments by removable separators. With all of these taken out, the terrain tiles fit there. The starting tiles are separated from the rest; with the turn track and the remaining two tuckboxes placed on top of them, they do not get mixed up with the others during transport.

One baggie per player, Plano 3705 holds everything else (has quite a bit of extra space, but makes for quick setup and fits in the box nicely, even with the insert).

Besides a dozen sets of pyramids, there are Zendo stones, rules cards, dice, ELBs, little animal tokens, and a set of double-six dominoes.

I'm tempted to move to a bigger box, so I could fit in some playing cards, a tarot deck, and poker chips. But no....

First time posting here, sorry if I break any rules. I feel like I'm overlooking something because after all these years this game has never been listed.

Cosmic Encounter + 5 expansions (Incursion, Conflict, Alliance, Dominion, Eons)

None of these are Plano branded, they're all sourced from AliExpress. I have provided links to each storage container below but AliExpress links are notorious for turning up dead. If you search plastic storage or plastic box or plastic container on the site you should find a lot of options.

The ships are stored in these plastic tubes. While they look impressive I would avoid these. They fit the ships perfectly but its a chore getting the ships to stack horizontally. They like to go vertical when being dropped into the tubes. When used in other games other flaws become apparent. The tubes are a lot thinner than they appear and its very easy to crack them when putting the stopper in. The biggest issue is that the stopper doesn't stay put very well. In this box the stoppers are held in place because there is so little room in the box but in games where there is a lot more room in the box the stoppers fall out easily spraying the contents everywhere. Next time I would look for tubes with screw on tops instead.

External image

The round planets are stored in these round petri dish like containers (803).

External image

The tokens are stored in these small plastic boxes (D3).

External image

The cards are stored in these boxes that fit them perfectly (Chimera size). They are too small for regular sized cards

External image

I stored the alien sheets in one of the expansion boxes so that they dont fly around everywhere. There is a huge amount of lid lift for this expansion box due to the amount of alien sheets but not enough lift that the lid isn't still engaged with the bottom half.

Slightly modified the stock insert and used a Plano 3500. Very loose rubber bands on the cards.

This photo is of TWO Flambeau boxes (bought at Wal-Mart) filled with counters from ALL (well...almost ALL the tokens) of the Descent main game and expansions.

*** EDIT: I retook pictures since the last one's were pretty crappy looking ***

This image is of the remaining tokens that I put into a smaller Flambeau box.

Second edition plus every hero/monster from the 1st edition and all expansions. Plenty of room for future expansions! (I used to have all 1st edition components in here but have replaced it with second edition).
