Board Game: The Disneyland Game
Board Game: Adventureland Game
Board Game: Disneyland Monorail Game

I confess I'm a bit of a Disney-phile. Growing up only a few miles from Disneyland probably didn't help much. In fact, I worked there for 4 years during college. To celebrate The Happiest Place on Earth's 50th anniversary I present my fourth full-blown contest list. Geekyland takes place in the Game section, BGG Jeopardy takes place in the list comments section at the bottom. Both contests will be open through Friday and will end at midnight BGG time (CST) on the night of 2/25/05. There will also be some mini contests taking place each day so check in throughout the week. Fawkes and Sky Knight X (who will be running the Geek Madness Tourney in March) have agreed to help with the judging. For now though, let's put on our mouse ear hats, stock up on E-Tickets, and head through the turnstiles of...

GEEKYLAND

Welcome to the geekiest place on earth - Geekyland! Well, not really - there is no such place, but that's about to change. In fact, the whole theme for these contests is for us all to build the boardgame amusement park of our dreams. And what would a park be without rides? For this main contest you must design your own game-ride to add to Geekyland. It could be a roller coaster, dark ride, kiddy ride - you name it. Write it up and add it to the list below. I've provided an example in the #1 slot. Only one entry per contestant will be allowed. A game may only be entered once - duplicates will be deleted. You also cannot enter a game that's already based on a ride (such as The Haunted Mansion or the Disneyland Monorail Game). You can, however, base a game on a ride that has already been parodied, or you can design a completely original attraction - it's up to you. Winners will receive: 1st-8gg, 2nd-5gg, 3rd-3gg, 4th-2gg. This contest will end at midnight BGG time (CST) on Friday 2/25/05 when the judging will commence. So put on your imagineer cap and above all - have fun!

This is an animatronic dark ride where guests travel on flat-bottomed boats. They first see the (animatronic) settlers arriving by ship in the new land--planting wheat, herding sheep, felling trees and making bricks for their young settlement. Turning a corner the riders are confronted by a robber. Wielding a sword and pistol, he laughs and declares that, "Dead sheep trade no wool!" The boat plunges down a waterfall and into an underground grotto where victims of the robbers are clearly visible. Human skeletons and dead sheep carcasses are strewn about everywhere. The boat passes an abandoned ore shaft where the miners were slaughtered. A vein of gold glimmers in the shaft.

Exiting the grotto, the riders can see that the settlement is now a thriving port city - but it's under attack by pirates! Cannon balls wiz overhead as the boat passes between the pirate ship and city walls. The riders enter the city where the settlers are busy recruiting a large army and building new roads to bring in reinforcements. In the climactic scene, the city is starting to burn, but just in time a large army arrives down the long road and defeats the invaders. With the city saved and the gold lands open again, the settlers get drunk and start singing, "Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a two-for-one trade for me!'

The boat passes below a bridge and the pirates and robbers can be seen in prison. They frantically reach through the bars trying to grab the keys to their cell which are held in the mouth of a sheep sitting just out of their grasp. Passengers disembark into a gift shop that's filled with Catan souvenirs and overpriced 5-6 player expansion kits.

-Mini Contest-

Character Builder: Every park needs some characters. You know - those people dressed up in silly costumes, thrilling the children and providing photo ops for the grownups. For this contest you must describe a character you'd like to see at Geekyland. It could be a game designer, a BGG Geek, a character from a game - whatever. Here's an example...

Derky Duck - This beloved character greets guests near the park entrance in front of the "Great Moments With Mr. Aldie" attraction. He dresses in a hypnotic yin & yang outfit that causes tourists to stand entranced. His shtick is to shout out that he'll do anything (and I mean ANYTHING) for a quick game of Tichu. Unfortunately he also has a bit of a temper that makes him spout out occasional obscenities sending shocked parents running for cover while clamping hands over their children's ears...

Winners will receive: 1st-3gg, 2nd-2gg, 3rd-1gg, lottery-1gg (a lottery winner will be selected at random). This casting call will be open until midnight tonight.

The winding line leads up to a point where a park worker directs you to one of three smaller lines, labelled L, C and R, obviously.

These lines each lead to the ride exit.

"Ladieees and Gennelmen... prepare yourself for the most thrilling ride of your lives as you strap yourself in to your own Ricochet Robot!"

As the users are ushered off of the line, each one is settled into his own robot. The front "belly" section is clear, revealing nothing but the darkness of the ride floor. Directly in front of the rider is a simple joystick-like control. A padded metal bar lowers over their shoulders to keep them in place, and suddenly the stadium lights up!

They see a huge metal room, with square paneled flooring with white LED light coming up from the edges of each tile. There are large barriers set up at various places in the stadium, each clearly visible by the glow of its own LEDs. And, at various points around the edge of the maze, they see their opponents: other robots, towering and glowing, each its own color.

Get ready... Get set... RICOCHET!

And suddenly, from above, colored spotlights shoot down through the mist, clearly outlining the goals of the various robots. Our robot, the green one, sees a green spotlight shining down on a spot at the other edge of the arena, off to the left, and behind a barrier. But it's near the red spotlit goal, and the red robot has just taken off in that direction!

We pull hard on our joystick, sending our robot careening off towards the goal. Luckily, no other robots are in our immediate path, but another problem rears its head: the barrier that blocked our view of the goal is also blocking our progress. We pull back on the lever, trying to veer around it, but we realize that's not how this game works, and let go of the lever...

Suddenly, we hit the barrier, and our velocity drops to zero. We weren't holding on to the controls, so our first hit just stopped us. Now we can send ourselves in any direction we like, but we've lost time. We pull the joystick at a right angle to our previous course, and our robot jerks back into motion and shoots off in that direction, rotating as it moves so we're looking "forward" again.

This time, we see the impact with the wall coming, and we're prepared. We pull our joystick back towards the glowing spotlight, and as we hit the wall our robot shoots off in that direction, losing no momentum, and putting us right on track to our goal.

But oh no! The red robot is shooting towards his goal, and it's right around the corner from ours! He's going to be in our way!

We see the rider of the red robot looking right at his spotlight, not noticing us, but the porthole to his robot doesn't let us see what direction he's pulling his lever... we're going to have to guess what will be a good rebound. We desperately pull right, and we're rewarded by a jolt as we hit the red robot and it stops dead in its tracks, while we shoot off towards a barrier near our own goal. Hah! It looks like the red robot was still pressing forward on his control, not having realized we were headed for him. He forgot the first rule of Ricochet Robots... you can't keep moving in the direction you hit something in.

Now he takes a second to reorient, and hits the controls again, sending him towards his goal but at a safe distance away from us... looks like he's learned caution. But too late for him. We're headed right for our goal, and after one more rebound, we hit it.

Whoosh!

Our robot is bathed in the lovely green glow of victory, and we see the glowing counter above our control panel suddenly light up: 1

Oh right... this game doesn't end for another five minutes. Quickly, we scan around the arena... and see our next goal. It's fairly close, and there aren't many barriers in the way, so we push off towards it.

Suddenly we notice... coming from both sides, the Blue and Yellow robots! Their goals are both near ours, and they heard the announcement when we got our point. They're going to get in our way!

We start looking for good positions to bounce from, and calculating our paths, as we brace for impact...

You ride through this haunted house in tiny little two-person cars on rails. The cars stop frequently as a horrendous monster lurches his way toward you. Cars whoosh through pools of blood and even push stone columns ahead of them. The monster comes closer and closer, then suddenly veers off as he spots a new victim. You breathe a sigh of relief as he heads off in a new direction, but suddenly he disappears through the wall and appears directly in front of your car! Just when you think you're doomed, the monster is teleported behind you, and your car makes a mad dash for daylight.

In the racing rides area, Geekyland offers visitors the chance to maneuver their own personal-sized riverboats through the changing shoals, banks, and dock areas of the Mighty Mississip. Riders must power their boats by bicycle-type pedals and have limited steering capabilities. As soon as the ride begins, it becomes something like bumper cars on water. With the flowing water carrying them downstream at a steady rate, riders must constantly change the speed of their pedaling and direction of turning, to make the ride last longer. If a boat runs onto the river bank or an island, the ride is over for that person. Because the river has many twists and turns, with islands appearing and disappearing almost without warning, the lead boat never knows which area of the river is best to be in. Alternate and random paths of the river are controlled by computer and heavy hydraulic systems, so repeat riders will not be able to anticipate the best path. The first boat to dock safely at the end of the ride (without crashing onto the bank) earns the visitor a free ride ticket to do it again, if they feel up to it!

A watter ride, starts out taking you into the fringes of the desert A boat similar to that of splash mountain. You pass under some hanging vines and see a few different colored jeeps with animatronic workers piling out of them. All wearing shirts of colors matching their jeeps. The boat round a corner and you see different groups of workers digging up assorted treasures: masks, Vases, plates, golden idols. In the next section you seethe start of a temple uncovering operration where just the small top of the temple is revealed and different groups are helping to uncover it. In the next section you see a temple much more uncovered only there are many more workers and they are fighting. At this point the ride starts to go uphill, you round a corner and see the temple from above, completly oncovered and one man standing on top of it with a machete! He is screaming down to the others below and waving it frantically yelling about a volvano, you start to go uphill again and the ride gets dark, you can hear rumbling coming from speakers all around and the voice of the man on top of the temple is yelling how you must all hurry away the colcano is going to erupt, you round the final corner and see an opening and you can smell sulphur. You come to the opening and drop! SPLASH! From the outside the opening you come out of is just below the lip of a smoking volcano. You sruvive your first expedition to tikal.

You're standing near the front gate when you see this couple enter...

Well? What DO you say? The most entertaining response receives 3gg, 2nd-2gg, 3rd-1gg, lottery-1gg. Here's a "classic" example: "I've got wood for your sheep."

Land Ho!: Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland ... these names proclaim the theme of what can be found if you'll only step this way. For this contests you must devise a land for Geekyland so we can group the rides into a common theme. Here's an example...

Roll and Move Land: This land is filled with paths divided into spaces. Guests are given dice, spinners and cards with colors that match the colors on the path. You may only move along the path to the space indicated by your random device. To enter a ride, restaurant, or restroom, you must land on its space by exact count. After experiencing this land, many guests leave the park in disgust and never return.

With Michael Eisner out of the picture (no pun intended), Disney decided they needed to revisit the basics that made them so successful in the first place.

"Mousetrap" represents a return to Disney's roots, a ride based on the classic Mickey Mouse cartoons. Each turn of your mouse-shaped car takes you through an episode in Mickey's evolution, starting with Steamboat Willie and finishing with the spectacular, holographic "Mickey Mouse - Beyond Thunderdome" (based on the soon-to-be-released feature film of the same name - watch for it!)

The whirlwind ends with your exit into the new Mickey Mountain of Suitcase Stuffers, Disney's greatest souveneir store yet. Buy now, or suffer the wrath of the wee ones on the long flight home...

Ad Exec: Every park needs a slogan. Disneyland is "The Happiest Place On Earth". Would this make Geekyland "The Geekiest Place On Earth"? No, that would be dorky (to use an apt pun). For this contest you must come up with a witty slogan - a commercial catch phrase that people will remember. It should be short and to the point (ala Got Milk?). Here's an example...

Stretch Gallery My favorite ride at Disneyland (and the favorite of a few other Geeks as well judging from their avatars) is The Haunted Mansion. If you've never been, there's a room that "stretches". Pictures hung on the walls that at first appear normal stretch as well revealing comic scenes of horror. Here are links to the actual pictures to give you an idea...

Haunted Mansion: http://www.deadendinternet.com/hauntedmansion/gallery.html
Phantom manner: http://www.doombuggies.com/phantom.htm

For this contest you must design a stretching picture to hang at The Haunted Game Store. Any Geek subject could be used. Here's an example...

Picture A: GROGnads, seen from the shoulders up, smiles at the viewer.

Stretches to...

Picture B: Grognads, wearing a straightjacket, stands in a rubber room with psychedelic, non sequitur graffiti covering the walls.

Trade-Land!

As you enter this land, you're given a supply of miscellaneous tickets, souveniers, and food vouchers, and told to have fun. Observing your immediate surroundings, you see several different groups of people, all busily engaged in various forms of trading.

The nearest group, in a slightly-recessed area, almost a pit, is easily the loudest and most chaotic, with people holding up what they're offering and shouting out "Three! I got three here!" and "Two for trade! Who'll give me two!"

A bit further on, a small garden is settled by another group, also loud but more organized, with everyone taking turns proposing trades; most of the trading focuses on trying to get certain combinations of tickets that allow the holders to go on rides in other areas of the park, but every now and then someone gets a monopoly on a type of ticket, which makes them an instant pariah in the group.

Another group, near the food court, is trading their food vouchers among themselves, although they're following a peculiar quirk in that, while they can trade any food voucher they please, they can only use their topmost voucher towards getting their meal. It would seem such an arbitrary restriction wouldn't amount to a hill of beans, but this group, too, is popular.
