The idea of this list is to show games that offer a particular theme or context. You won't find parchisi on this list -- I'm reserving it for games that bring to mind an historical or literary setting, and done a good job of it:

Sort of a combination between a choose-your-own adventure and an RPG. This is a really cute game, but the problem is that you can only play it a set number of times before running out of scenarios. Lots of fun! Cooperative play too!

Looney Labs has made another ingenious game here! The tone is enhanced by being given a secret identity / persona for your time-traveller!

-sigh- I love this game... Maybe it's the subject matter, maybe it's the multiple ways to win (which makes it sneaky), maybe it's the intonation of the Nicene Creed at the end.

Boy, you really do begin to feel like one of those two-dimensional dungeon-delvers a-la Talisman etcetera. The essentially in-character bickering over gold gives this game a real tone that is missing in Talisman or Heroquest.

The French Revolution -- a great setting. The game plays really well, and the amusing characters in line to be executed give you a good giggle as well as a sense of tone. Look out for the Pimpernel!

The miniatures are nice! The tense combat really makes you feel like you're in a dogfight. Very, very cool. When you move too fast, you lose manoeverability -- making tough strategic choices gives you a clear sense of tone.

This is a beautiful game. The pieces and cards are beautiful. The game is a heavy bluffing game. The act of choosing a different fantasy/medieval role each round gives a clear sense of tone.

The small-size units, the beautiful miniatures, all lend a very clear tone to the world. More tone and feel than Warhammer Fantasy, just because the scale of the armies is smaller and the world is less generic.
