put up a Geeklist of his Top 20 Outside 200 games, and said he'd also be interested in hearing from others. Well, today is my Sunday afternoon and since my alternative was putting up shelves in the study, I decided to give it a looksee. Besides, I like crappy games. This should be easy...

It wasn't quite as easy as I'd expected. It turns out a good number of my absolute favorite games are indeed ranked among the top 200 here on BGG... And compiling this list may have sparked a whole other geeklist, as I realized that there are a lot of games I own that I think would be among my favorites, but that I've never taken to game nights, as I don't suspect they'd go over too well with our group (I catch enough flak about the types of games I like to play). (Edit: Such a list did exist... I shall have to put my entries on it too!)

So, without further ado, here's my Top 20 outside 200.

Like I said, I thought this list was going to be a breeze. Code 777 is probably one of my absolute favorite games, alongside the heavy hitters like T&E, Cosmic Encounter, RFTG, and Acquire. Actually... I might prefer this over any one of those mentioned, so there you have it.

Seriously. There's no challenge here. "The Resistance" certainly lends itself to smaller groups and faster play, but nothing really beats the awesome psychology experiment that is Werewolf. My wife and I are looking forward to Werewolf at BGG.CON this year so much so that she had custom t-shirts printed up for me with my Werewolf nickname emblazoned on them, along with catchy slogans such as "Trust me, I'm your seer."

Often referred to by those of us who play as, "You lose: The board game." Come on, if you can't handle dying to the swinging blade on the first turn of the game, then you really can't call yourself an adventurer, can you?

Before Steve Jackson become the purveyor of all things Munchkin, he made one of the finest, most elegant war games ever to come off the printing press. Now, if he'd just release it as a standard-quality game in a Munchkin-size box and keep it in print, instead of the ridiculous 3,000 print-run, $100 mega-box due out sometime in the future, then he could be excused for all things Munchkin.

I have to agree with Bankler on this one. While the original Roma didn't do much for me, this was my introduction to the "series" and I think it's a fantastic little two-player game.

Call it Telestrations, Scribblish, or Eat Poop You Cat. They're all over 200, and wrongfully so. Granted there are scoring rules, but it's really more of an activity. Still, it's one of the most fun activities around that you can have with 6 or more people that doesn't give you a bad reputation around town.

Edit: Don't think "funnest" is a word.

The base game of Coloretto is also above 200, and maybe that's okay. Played with 3 or more, Coloretto is a wild game of randomness of near Fluxxian levels. Played with 2, it's surprisingly fun and tactical, with agonizing choices on every turn.

We pretty much all agree that something about this game is broken, and we haven't figured out how to fix it yet. But we still enjoy it on occasion (if for nothing else than for the thought experiment of "how can I fix this?"). The price of the game isn't worth what you get in the box, but when you're swept up in BGG.CON 2010 madness, you can justify any game purchase.

Why is this Sid Sackson classic not below 200? Probably because it's been in and out of print for so many years. There's a new printing coming out this year, and I hope it gets the limelight it deserves. Many push your luck games have tried to take on the classic, but they are all pathetic and weak (I'm looking at you, Zombie Dice).

Man, the stories that came out of this game... most of which would be rated M for Mature.

Black Vienna is a weird one because I really do enjoy playing it, but it's just soooo easy to break the game. It's since been replaced by Code 777 for me, but only because Code 777 doesn't completely break if someone makes a mistake. As far as gameplay mechanisms go, I still prefer Black Vienna.

Around the time that we were playing Once Upon a Time, we also played a lot of Cheapass Games -- and The Big Idea was arguably the best of breed (lucky for us, it's finally getting the full-color high quality treatment it deserves from Funforge in 2011).

If there's another game in the Cheapass series that comes close, it's probably Witch Trial... What can I say, I'm a sucker for games where the primary objective creativity. It's that stupid NaNoWriMo-writing, RPG-playing, hippy-a-go-go side of me.

It's been brought to my attention that I probably left this one off the list only because Bankler recently referred to Hanabi as "boring" and "an activity, not a game" on his blog and I am a slave to the opinion of others.

Therefore, my secret crush is Hanabi. I've been playing it almost every week and enjoying the heck out of it every time.
