Seems like a fun idea.

My top 20 games with a ranking NOT in the top 200.

Mine are ranked in the order that I like them. I rate the first six games with as "10"; I rate the next seven as "9", and the remaining seven games as "8".

For the serious NBA fan: a simulation that doesn't corner you into a boring exercise without choices. It's great to play draft leagues and play teams from different seasons against each other. Loads of possibilities for the serious hoops fan. Because it takes a serious hoops fan, that is why the game is rated #3007 -- there aren't a whole lot of them out there.

It's another Command and Colors/Richard Borg game. It's an introductory/light wargame of the civil war rather than a serious simulation. It was the perfect gateway for me into Civil War history and led me to start watching Ken Burns documentary, as well as start reading books on the topic, and start purchasing heavier war games on the topic.

I think this game is better than Memoir 44's base game (minus expansions) in game play, appearance, and chrome.

A light American Revolution game, but more strategic than, say, Memoir '44. The system is great. Not a perfect simulation, but for what it tries to achieve, it hits a home run.

A great card driven (OPS/Event) game that uses military operations to achieve political objectives. A lighter wargame, but very challenging. This game has two unique things working for it:

a) The ability to "bank" your operation points for later use, which to my knowledge is a first for this genre.

b) The ability to start and end the game on any year. You pick the years and the set-up is different for each year and the victory conditions are different for each year. Thus, you can have a game be as short as 1 turn (which is 1 year), yet it could be ANY of the years from 1965-75 (any of the 11 turns), or it could go as long as 11 turns. If you decide to play from 1970-71 and another game from 70-72, the set-up is the same, but the victory conditions are different. Likewise, if you played from 70-72 and 71-72, the set-up is different, but the victory conditions are the same. This is very, very cool.

This is my latest fad, and it may be my favorite game that uses the Paths of Glory system. It's certainly different from the other PoG games in that its scope is much more limited, making you not feel so overwhelmed when introduced to the system.

GMT's entire Battles of the American Revolution series rocks, but to me, this is the best of all of them. It has the most variability between the games and has the best balance between the two sides in terms of strength.

The system is cool because when you read the base rule book, you know about 85% of any game in the series, and then you read a short rulebook that is about 4 pages long to pick up the specific rules for that game. The mechanics are quite robust to handle a number of battles from that time period, and has a much higher degree of realism and simulation than, say, Hold the Line.

This is the father of all OPS-based card driven games, and until Washington's War came out, it was the best game, period, in my book. Washington's War corrected the few weaknesses of this, but this one will go down in history as one of the most revolutionary games ever, and it instantly made every grand-strategic American Revolution game obsolete.

TSR (best known for Dungeons and Dragons) came out with 8 mini-games back in the early 1980s. This was by far the best of them. It is a small hex & counter wargame that involves leaders with special powers, tanks, air power, infantry, air cavalry, mercenaries all with a sci-fi theme, and mysterious alien artifacts. While the theme (putting down a planetary revolt by an imperialist force) isn't anything special, the way they pulled it off, did. My only wish was that it would be picked up by Fantasy Flight Games and re-released in full Ameri-Trash glory, with cool bits and a big board.

Games like this is why Avalon Hill remains legendary in the hearts of its fans. It may have a couple of mechanics that could be upgraded, but overall, this remains THE game on the War of the Roses, and is far lighter in complexity than your typical wargame. It also provides the wonderful opportunity to screw your allies without the venom of Diplomacy.

The only reason this game is here (and not higher) is because I rarely ever get to play it and I have never got to experience it in its full glory.

Long live Kingmaker!

I am the biggest fan of this game on BGG.

It is a beautiful game: metal airplanes on metal stands on a wood game board. It isn't realistic in the slightest in terms of aerial combat or the capabilities of the planes themselves. It is kind of like checkers with a twist, but the balance in the game is amazing -- almost Euro-like without the cheese. It is very easy to learn but difficult to master.

This is the 3rd best game in the Battles of the American Revolution Series (the 2nd, Germantown, is the newest and lacks the 30 votes necessary to get ranked).

This game is fun because it has one of the ultimate flanking maneuvers. It has its own challenges compared to the others in the series, as outlined by the victory conditions.

This it the WWII version of the WWI classic Paths of Glory (a top 20 game) made by the same designer using the same mechanics as PoG and Shifting Sands (ranked #5 on this list). Where PoG tends to bog down in trenches, this one is more open and fluid, but in my book, has excessive scripting and tends to minimalize the Western Front, which keeps it from being a perfect 10, but it is quite a remarkable game in its own right.

A Midway game that plays solitaire and doesn't have a 100-page rulebook (OK, I'm being sarcastic, but Carrier is just too much game for me). Also a big plus, you can fight a variety of carrier battles from 1942. The cards are beautiful. The game is fast, simple, and always challenging.

Anyone who grew up before Don King ruined boxing and has fond memories of Ali, Frazier, Sugar Ray (either of them), Duran, Hearns, Spinx (either of them), will like this game. Where else can you have Joe Louis and Larry Holmes go at it? Very much a simulation, so you are a passive observer, but still very fun to examine the possibilities.

Star Fleet Battles was my gateway game, but the complexity and rules lawyering kept it from achieving everything it could have been. Had this been around when I was in high school, it would probably be my #1 ranked game. As it is, I never find opponents, so I never get to play it face-to-face. It is simple and streamlined and focuses the challenging parts on where they SHOULD be focused. It is so much better than SFB that I find it hard to believe anyone would prefer it, but there are gluttons for complexity, so I don't fault them. When I play it solitaire, I marvel at it and say, "If only ..." This is what starship combat is all about.

Beer and Pretzel and weapons of mass destruction! Life is good. This is even better than its predecessor Nuclear War, although it is best to combine them both, since this is an expansion OR a stand-alone game. Lots of table talk when you play this. If you take this game seriously, you need to lighten up, because this baby is all about fun and dark humor.

I have other P-G games and I am sure they are better, but I have not got around to them, and this one will hold a special place with me for introducing the system.

The well-writtten (3rd edition) 16-page rulebook is standard in the games, so once you learn it (and it is easy to learn -- did I mention that the rule book is well-written?), you pretty much know any of the games. It has a great mechanics and the components are high quality and beautiful. The only reason this isn't ranked higher is because the knuckleheads who make this are anti-VASSAL and too dim to figure out the power of the internet. They act like Cold War-era Soviets who don't understand capitalism and think the game is State secrets, without realizing the power of the internet to promote the game.
