I just spent a wonderful weekend at a Gulf Games (my first!) and am now trying to put together my session report.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances and lack of planning on my part, I've forgotten probably half of what I played!

I'll start by adding in those games that I remember playing, and if you were one of the folks who played something with me, please comment to let me know. And if you remember playing something not on the list, please add it!

(I'd appreciate it if folks didn't just add random stuff though... thanks!)

Played with Derk Solko, Erin Fisher, Kevin Gonzales, and Chris Comeaux.

Despite Derk's promise that I would like the game, I'm sorry to report I was merely whelmed. It was very long (which in itself is not a problem) and just dragged. Plus the geologist in me had trouble suspending my disbelief over the misarrangements of gems by value.

Winner: Kevin, by a landslide (which would have merely been a small mudfall had we been scoring correctly.)

A most excellent game, where me and my new buddy Josh Miller teamed up against John Palagyi and Chris Lohroff.

Never before have I had the occasion to prove my geekiness to the extent I did in this game, where I provided the word "Nimda" as a clue for the word "worm".

Winner: Me and Josh, by about five or six points

I played this twice, once with
Val Staton, Ward Batty, Jeff Stephens, and Charlie Davis

and a second time with
Greg Schloesser, Michelle Corbin, Earl Bailey, and Chris Lohroff(?)

Both games were loads of fun, though only the second time did we "ham it up" by naming the pizzas and playing with fake Italian accents. Mine, I noticed, turned a bit Russian over time though. Italian isn't one I do well, though my Irish is not too bad.

Winners: Game 1: 3 way tie between me, Ward, and Jeff
Game 2: Earl (who helped his wife SEVERAL times, giving new meaning to the term 'family business')

I think next time I'm asked to play this I will just stop procrastinating about going to the DMV to see about getting my title cleared. Although the company was as nice as could be, this game hits two of my sore spots - word games, and games that require quick thinking and reflexes.

Winner - Vickie Watson, with an incomprehensibly amazing score of 35!!!

Biggest Loser - me, with a score of 290.

I owe these guys an apology for falling asleep several times during this game. I'm not sure whether to blame the excellent (and rather large!) bottle of Hefeweissen that I consumed at the German restaurant or lack of sleep, but I just kept zoning out during this game and was uncharacteristically inattentive.

I also hadn't played the game in ages and unfortunately forgot the minor detail that the tiles accumulate, so that calling Ra in the very first turn of the game was probably a Very Bad Idea.

Winner: ??? Help me out, guys. All I know is it sure wasn't me!

ps. Wow, this is game #12 in the database!

I played this at least twice, but maybe even three times.
Game 1: John Palagyi, Derk Solko, Chris Lohroff.
Game 2: Same as above except one of those guys swapped out with someone else and I don't remember who.

A nice little filler with a heavy screw-your-neighbor component. We discovered in this game that Derk can't add to 13 and half the time neither could Chris But we all had fun trying to convince each other to try to steal someone else's cards rather than our own.

Winners: Chris L. for game 1, John P. for game 2

Played with Michael Weston, Val Staton, Tim Watson, Matt Albritton

This was the long-awaited highlight of my weekend. I've been wanting to play this game for years and never had the chance until now (except for an aborted attempt Jason Matthews made to teach me and Rafael Lehrer on a sleepy Saturday afternoon with no preparation that was called on account of mental fatigue)

But Michael was VERY prepared and did an excellent job teaching the game. After the first election I started to grok it and I think did very well for myself. Unlike the teeth-pulling of Das Zepter von Zavandor, the several hours we spent on this one just flew right by for me. Unfortunately, Tim didn't like the game nearly so much so we decided to call it after election four out of kindness. He gave his own copy of the game to a grateful Matt.

Winner: None, but it most likely would have gone to me, Matt, or Val judging from position.

PS. Move over, Ra, this is game #1 in the database!!!

I didn't realize what game Chris was talking about when he suggested Dawn Under because I only knew it by its amusing and giggleworthy German name "Dicke Luft in der Gruft" (which was stamped across the Zoch bag I got at Essen when I picked up my copy of Goldbrau).

This was our last game of Friday evening and we were all zonkered. This was reflected quite effectively in our performance. We all stunk. Really. Kept opening the same darned graves three turns in a row and stuff like that.

Other than that, it's a cute little memory game with the cutest little vampires EVER!!!!!!111

Winner: Chris stunk less than the rest of us and eventually managed to win despite himself.

So-so blind-bidding and cube-placement game. I did really well the second round and got my arse spanked the third. It was kind of fun, but we were all pretty much in agreement that it wasn't anything spectacular.

Winner: Not sure, but I think it was Leon?

Played with Greg Schloesser, Charlie Davis, Vickie Watson, and a couple others who I can't remember now. Help!

Apparently GG has a Liar's Dice tournament every year. I'd never played the game before and honestly I must admit it didn't particularly interest me. I looked frantically for someone, anyone, who wasn't going to play in the tournament so that we could play something else.

But it was not to be. I was ordered to "SIT!" quite imperatively by Greg Schloesser, so I sat. I lasted about five minutes, losing four dice when my bluff was called (but I really had nowhere to go with it but down, I must say). The last one went shortly after.

Winner: I have no clue, because I went off to play something else as soon as I was eliminated. I do know that Chris Comeaux was eliminated from his table even quicker than I was, so I was only the SECOND biggest loser in the tourney. Anyone know who won the whole shebangup?

Players: Ward Batty, Larry Levy, Michael Weston and someone else sharing with Michael Weston. It might have been Chris Comeaux, actually but I'm not sure.

Cute and clever but not too tough deduction-esque filler with tiles that kept falling over. The first time through we were playing wrong because we were told that the numbers only went from 0-10. So we started over. I really liked it, enough that it was my only purchase from the flea market . Admittedly the price was right at $3, but that is neither here nor there.

Winner: Me, by a hair. I actually would have won a turn earlier had I not failed to notice that the white 7 was already revealed right across the table from me. Doh!

As I mentioned in my Counter re-review a few months ago, I regret that I haven't gotten this to the table more often. Actually, it had been a couple years. It had also been a couple years for most of the other players, except Derk who had played a month or so ago.

He proceeded to spank our collective arses with a wooden spoon. Figuratively speaking, of course. The first half the game I wasn't in a position to veto what anyone else was doing, but eventually was able to, but it wasn't enough to stop Hurricane Derk and the Green line. I did manage to dominate in two of the goods types but I had an awful lot of trouble getting stations onto any routes, as the lines seemed to swerve uncontrollably rather than actually append one.

Disclaimer: This game was played not long after dinner on Saturday. We ate at Allen's Grill and Grog, a little Cajun place where Happy Hour is 11 am - 8 pm with $3.00 U-Call-Its and an additional 50% off because it was Ladies Night. Somehow I managed to pass for a lady, because even with the margarita and mai tai my bill was about 12 buckaroos. Have I mentioned my complete lack of alcohol tolerance? Anyway, the only thing between my beverages and Stephenson's Rocket was the Prize Table & awards ceremony, so I suspect this may have contributed to my complete lack of ability to play competently.

Winner: As I said, Derk kicked our butts.

Actually, I lied. We weren't playing Hick Hack in Gackelwack (even though it is a fine game). We weren't even playing Pick Picknic. I'll leave it up to y'all to guess what Chicken Game with Blind Bidding mechanic we were playing, since the last time I added it to a humorous geeklist I got accused of shilling (although I was later graciously acquitted.)

Cute fantasy-themed Japanese card game with pretty graphics and a M:TG-esque card drafting mechanic. Honestly though, it didn't really do much for me. But it was worth trying once.

Didn't play with Ben Huber

The sole child at this year's GG, Joe Huber's son Ben, approached me to play this when I was actually in the middle of Maya but was getting up to hug someone goodbye. Rumor has it that this is his FAVORITE game and that lots of folks got to play it with him. They said it's actually not a bad game, I don't know because I haven't ever played it.

I did feel bad having to turn Ben down though, as he seems like a sweet kid. Maybe next time?

That's all I can remember, folks - if you can remember anything else, please help me out!
