This is my first geeklist. I'm fairly new to board gaming and i find myself leaning into the wargame genre. For my first wargame i bought Tide of Iron. Now i'm looking to by my second and i'd like it to have a civil war theme. i was wondering what you other geeks think the best civil war game is out there.

when i say best i mean games that are fun to play and still represent the civil war theme.

I myself prefer that a game is balanced. Seeing as how i've only played like 8 different board games myself i don't have any civil war games to add to the list.

I got this game earlier this year. This was my first Civil War game and I enjoyed it so much that I got interested in learning more about it. It uses the Command and Colors system (also used in Memoir 44). It's not a heavy game. It's lighter than Tide of Iron, but it's very fun and lets you play a large number of scenarios and the pieces look great!

If you would like to play the entire Civil War in one setting, this is a relatively easy one and I found it quite enjoyable. I heard the very best grand-strategy games are The Civil War and For the People. They are quite a bit more complex, so it comes down to how much you are wanting to bite off.

This is loosely based on the Civil War. It's a unique trick-taking game for two teams of two. The special ability of the cards, playing three tricks at once, and which flank one plays a card on determining who plays the next card all lend a feeling of battle.

The artwork on the cards is very nice, though the general ranking seems to not quite follow historical hierarchy.

You can get started with this one after reading the single 8-1/2" x 14" sheet of rules. Then the Advanced Rules add some more flavor to this game, making it a very balanced and entertaining game.

It's also not a bank-breaker. You can often find copies on eBay in the $20-30 range.

Once you've acclimated yourself to wargaming, then you may be ready for this one. Considered the best strategic study of the Civil War for almost 30 years. Not currently in print, but not impossible to obtain in the secondary market, through eBay or trading with fellow wargamers.

Well, I really loved For the People, but it's not a game for a person new to wargaming.

This game is part of a 20+ year old series, and is one of the most recent releases. You get three games in one box. The series covers individual battles of the Civil War. This particular game in the series covers the First Battle of Manassas, the Second Battle of Manassas (using the same map), and a hypothetical Third Battle of Manassas.

While my one of my favorites (which is what you asked for) it is also a fairly complex game with 30+ pages of pretty dense reading.

For a person new to the wargaming genre who wanted to play a Civil War game, I'd recommend A House Divided (strategic), or Battle Cry (battle-level).

If you already know you will LIKE complicated games, then jump right in with For the People or Three Battles of Manassas.

The "Glory" system simulates brigade-level battles using a chit-pull system. Complexity falls between Across 5 Aprils and Three Battles of Manassas and plays relatively quickly (for a wargame). I really enjoy it.

This installment of the series covers Antietam and Cedar Creek. Still in print and ridiculously cheap (around $20). Glory (1st/2nd Manassas and Chickamauga) and Glory II: Across the Rappahannock (Chancellorsville) are unfortunately out-of-print.

Out-of-print but can be found on the cheap. This precurser to the "Great Campaigns of the American Civil War" series (such as "Stonewall Jackson's Way", mentioned above) is much more streamlined and faster playing. It's a slam-bang operational/corps-level simulation of Grant's 1864 Overland Campaign, covering the Wilderness to Petersburg on one map and few counters. A underappreciated classic.
