You've hosted a wonderful meal, everyone is more than full and now it's time to kick back and relax for the rest of the evening. What game do you select as the perfect after-dinner fare to play with your guests?
It has to be unhurried, easy to digest, something that goes with a glass of port and a cigar (if you're into such things) with the lights turned down a little. You must be able to have a decent conversation while you're playing, and not just about the game but about life. The game's strategies should be subtle, not antagonistic, because you enjoy your dinner guests for their joie-de-vivre and their laissez-faire and would like them to remember this night serenely many years from now. It's not about the game itself but about how the game fits the mood. And if you end up playing until the wee hours of the morning, so be it.

I can't think of a more fitting game than this one. Draw a tile, place a tile, place a meeple or not. Can a game be any more laid back and still be as interesting?

Citadels is quick enough to learn and play that it fits neatly into the after-dinner slot. It is simple enough for non-gamers, and interesting for gamers. If you serve chocolate with the port, I recommend putting all of the cards into protectors, not just the character cards. And remind the guests that the butterscotch is not part of the dessert. I would provide a nice rose to go with this game that is not all champagne fluff, and not all shiraz brain-burner.

I find this game offers a unique opportunity to impress upon your guests the subtle degree of sophistication one possesses. Ideal following dinners with your boss, potential mother-in-law or anyone else whose opinion of you matters a great deal.

But of course. The game is quiet and elegant, with no raucous jostling. Everyone concentrates feverishly, but invisibly. The witty banter can continue throughout the game, interrupted only by occasional interrogatives about one another's cards.

This is the quintessential after-dinner couples game.

A superb after dinner game. Great because there remains player interaction, but it doesn't just have to remain about the game. Very relaxed.
