Most games have their detractors as well as those that really like the game There is also the rare game that is loved by a large majority. On the other side are the games that are generally disliked by a lot of people. But at the top of the bell curve there is kind of a middle ground where games sit in regards to the favor of the gamers that frequent the Geek.

Then there are those games that don't really fit anywhere in the bell curve. People either tend to really love the game or really hate it. The scathing reviews and the glowing reviews tend to equal out, and the two sides battle it out over their positions on the game. There are often a hand full of users that sit in the middle ground, but there are also a lot of users on completely opposite ends regarding the merits of the game in question. And it is these users that defend their position with every ounce of energy. With that I present the Geeklist of the most polarizing games out there. I will start out with a small amount of games that I feel qualify. And in the spirit of Geeklisting I will enjoy reading what others add.

Also, if you're going to add a game try to give an idea about what the main points of opposition are in the game.

Dominion was the inspiration for me to start this Geeklist. There are a lot of Dominion addicts out there. Sites like Isotropic and Board Game Arena have created a nice little outlet to foster many "Dominionites." There are also many who just plain hate this game. They scream on the boards about the lack of theme and, for a lack of a better word, the programmed feel of the game. Dominion to me defines what a polarizing game is.

Is this even a game? That is the central question that both the proponents and detractors of this game fuss over. There are some that think this is an uproarious and unique game and there are those that feel like this shouldn't even be called a game. This brings another interesting question into view: What exactly makes something a game?

This is another game that seems to be either loved or hated. Those that like it point to the strong theme, the replayability bestowed by the various power/race combos, and the quality of the components. The detractors generally feel there isn't much to the game...that it's perhaps too light or too "mathematical." Detractors also feel that the decisions in the game are obvious. Users have clashed in this game's forums defending their positions. The user drunkenKOALA has written detailed posts describing the strategic depth of the two player version of Small World and he has been thoroughly challenged on these points many times.

Here's a game with a steep learning curve. I read so many reports from people who played it once or twice and don't understand what the fuss is about. "The iconography is too complicated" or "I just don't get it". But the game is fabulous albeit tough to get into. I'm a fan, but I understand it's not for everyone. It's a game that requires commitment.

Those who like (a.k.a. "The wrong side"): It's a great game of negotiation skills.

Those who hate (a.k.a. "The correct side"): To succeed, you have to be willing to be a general @sshole and willing to tell boldface lies to your friends' faces.

This is one of the more polarizing games that I've seen. People either seem to think it's fantastic, or think it's a bore. At least in our local game group it seems that people either rate it a 10 or a 4 -- and not a lot in between.

This definitely fits the bill. Protagonists claim that it is a great gateway game or filler. Listing an easy learning curve, fast play, strong player interaction and fun. Antagonists counter that the theme is reprehensible and play is too chaotic. So trying to see beyond the smoke, I would agree that the theme is offensive to many people. The play is chaotic, but somehow it works, creating close games in just about every case... I have never met anyone personally who would not play this and when they did, they mostly seemed to like it.

After joining BGG a while back I was kind of surprised how many people on here have a fondness for this game. I've never even considered playing it, I have always thought it was kind of nerdy like Pokemon, Yu-gi-oh etc. and was just something kids collected. But apparently I am wrong, and people actually play it, have tournaments, and enjoy it. I would still feel kind of funny having a friend over to play Magic though. But I'm 43 years old, and it could be a generational thing too. I can't believe I'm the only one on here that feels like I do.

OPTION 1 - Pointless and trivially broken - hardly rates as a "game" and would never play it

OPTION 2 - Superb game with life changing consequences, teaching younger players the power of defining and following a successful strategy

I'm pretty biased in favor of option 2, both because I love kids games and partly because Aapep was designed by Paul A. DeStefano, author of one of the best Tic-Tac-Toe review ever written!

I haven't played with the expansion(s) which I hear improve things, but for me, this was a 6-hour snooze fest with entirely too many random events and too much A attacks B and C wins.

Yet there are those who seem to absolutely love this game... I haven't met anyone who thinks it's just an "OK" game.

A bastard wargame child of an ameritrash company, set in a quick-playing-semi-wargame world and yet playing as if you'd command huge armies and struggle with getting your orders to the right places in time (which you do), this game has gone under the radar of the target audience it could have had, while it alienated the guys who bought the game and expected some kind of "Warhammer single battle".

And yet there are those (like me) who absolutely love the complexity and the thematic influences on battles and the neat initiative system and how everything fits together just perfectly.

Though I have no idea why, this game is actually has the "least likely to fit a bell curve" rating of any game in the database. 50 people rank it a ten, 19 people rank it a one, and every other rating from two through nine has 8-votes or less.

Around 10 years ago, Eagle Games put out a series of epic amerithrash games with great components but with less than perfect rules. If you are into this type of game and don't mind an eratta/FAQ that is as long as the manual these games are great. As you can imagine it's really love'em or hate'em.

The other ones are:
War! Age of Imperialism
The American Civil War
Attack!
and to some degree:
Conquest of the Empire

ANYTHING BY REINER KNIZIA

When I stumbled onto this site several months ago I was amazed, and still am, by the special venom directed by some towards Knizia - a form of Geek anathema. The accusations are mostly of soulless lack of theme and grating in-your-face mathematics, and while I can empathise to an extent I can't understand the outright loathing of all things Knizia.

He's obviously contributed a lot to the hobby, and I have enjoyed the majority of his games that I have tried. I thank him for drawing my wife deeper into gaming via Through the Desert, Samurai, Ingenious and more recently Lost Cities.

Rosenberg and Chvatil may have their fans and detractors, but is any other designer really more polarising?

What no D&D crapness? I thought this list was made for this one.

Personally, I hate it. And can't understand the hype/love. But each to their own I suppose.

To me, this is a roll and move game. Little in the way of decisions. It was the first of this type of "skirmish" type game for me, and I'm very decided that they're not for me. I really want something with meaningful decisions and options and was expecting with this even a bit of a sense of adventuring - maybe searching, gaining prizes/treasures etc. A sense of excitement. I got none.
