Civilization with Advanced Civilization and Western Expansion Map constitute the perfect game for me. I love epic spanning games with civilisation as a theme. It always feels great to see your population expanding. The use of the reverse of the population counters as economic goods is a great idea since it forces the player to decide between population expansion or economic expansion. Forwards planning is therefore vital here. The trading system is lots of fun too and adds another dimension to the game. And also this game is easy to to teach to newbies and its learning curve is not steep at all.

I plan to get 7 Ages soon. From what I read, this game might be better than Civ. I'll put my comment on this list if 7 Ages does topple Civ as my perfect game.

It was difficult to choose, but I would have to go with Zertz. It is best described as deep simplicity; deep strategies described within simplistic rules. The ever changing board ensures no two games are ever the same. The outstanding components always make it a beauty to look at....

A tiny part of me wanted to say Settlers of Catan since it was my first love, but when push comes to shove, I have got to go with Euphrat & Tigris.

What makes this game perfect? Excellent game play for 2, 3 or 4 players. After having played this game several hundred times, I still love it win or loose. The game board and pieces are beautiful to look at (original edition, Mayfair version is a little lack-luster), and it has a ton of tiny wooden cubes - the true mark of a wonderful german game.

Love/hate game for most people, but I LOVE IT! I'm in the game chopping heads off of minotaurs, I'm the most powerful creature in the universe, and everyone can team up against me and I can still win! Not regularly, mind you...But Titan has a satisfying story arc through the game that surpasses pretty much every other game I've played, coupled with LOTS of strategic and tactical decisions to be made along the way, AND the chance to gloat/wail over the dice.

Princes of Florence. It just allows me to really get into a game, and still enjoy time with others. I personally like it's Multiplayer Solitare' feel (which I usually do not). It's got spacial planning, resource planning, and lots more. I love that you can actually take away from your score to get money, but then at the end of the game you might lose by 3, and you think 'DAMN, if I hadn't takent hat money!' but if you hadn't taken the money, would you have even come that close? I love that!

More specifically, 7 Card Stud. A close 2nd would be 6 Card Stud followed by 5 Card Stud.

Texas Hold 'Em sucks. Hold 'Em is like a Monster Truck show in a small arena compared to a World Level Formula One race. All bluster and noise but no real talent, patience or obvious skill.

I am incredibly biased about Poker as it paid better than many jobs I has as a young teen and in my early twenties. It got me transportation, extra cash to chase the girls and paid the rent more than once. It's the epitomy of a combined arms game - it has it all: Fog of War, deductive reasoning, bluff and bluster, bait & switch, human emotion and reaction, threat and fear. The only advantage any player has in Poker is skill, patience and a gut-check that makes most people look like thumb-sucking, Birkenstock-wearing pansy-boys.

While not strictly what I'd call a "Board Game", Poker is an equal playing ground for men, women, race and religion. I have had my ass handed to me by a 70 year old Granny in Hawthorne, Nevada, had to wire for gas money to leave Reno, won a Mustang GT from a rich boy in LA, paid my rent in England and returned my winnings to a struggling co-worker in Los Gatos.

Table-stakes, pot-limit 7 card stud is the only game where I have to bring a towel to mop up the adrenaline that squirts out my ears when I play.

The perfect 10 of games.

This is mine. As far as I am concerned, this combines everything I look for: player interation, fascinating mechanics, resource management, some luck (but not too much), a bit of tactics, tuning (to suit your group) and unexpected scalability.
And you get a story experience built in. What more could anyone ask for?

I rate this as the perfect game for me and my girlfriend -- together. We play with every expansion we can get our hands on and a few house rules & mods. Prolly 4/5 games a week.

While we regularly play a variety of other games, we only ever refer to this one as "the game" -- it's one that got us started

All the things the crazy bunny said... but in a board game.

Add:

- variable role choice, objectives and order of play (but all within the control of the players)

- the perfect balance of strategy, tactics and something in-between

- no luck, but enough chaos to prevent perfect plans and analysis paralysis

- Beautiful, beautiful bits - in just the right number and variety. Not so many that it is fiddly, but enough to keep you engaged.

This is my current "10". By my own ratings policy, Only one game at a time (that I currently play) can hold that spot... and this is it.

Go has already been taken as the perfect game and I really have to agree. So here is the second most perfect game for me. Chess. It really is a furious contest between two equal armies. This game has it all: depth, strategy, tactics, patience, humility, bragging rights, beauty, spectacular moves, sacrifice! Is there anything more satisfying than to see a combination that will end up in a mate where you have to sacrifice your queen?

St. Petersburg is a perfect game. I know some will disagree but it's a matter of preference. I haven't bought a game since Settlers that has sparked an addiction like St. Petersburg. Even though it's just money and cards there's something about the game. Besides the strategic elements, the game is fast to set up and put away, can be played with 2 to 4 players (Settlers can't be played with 2 except for the card game), easy to teach and learn (5 min.), and the game has a sense of familiarity about it. The graphics are nice and clean, the concepts are straight forward, and everything runs like a well tuned engine. This is by far my favorite game!

I was just thinking about this yesterday. Today I moved PR up from a 9 to a 10 on my personal raitings. Let me explain why this game is so perfect to me.

I unfortunatly have a very bad hang up in that I get bored with games very easily if I feel like I don't have any chance to win. This can either mean that I don't like a game because every time I play I feel like I can't win (probably why I don't care for abstracts.) or it can be that halfway through a game I see that I am soo far behind the leader that I then get bored and give up... either mentally by not really trying my best at the game any more or in reality and really ruin the experience for everyone else. (Thankfully I don't do that second one too often anymore.. I have matured some.)

Now back to PR. What I love about this game is that there is never a point in the game when you feel like you have no chance of winning. With the VP's being hidden you really can't acuratly judge how you are doing compared to others. Almost every game I have played the person we thought would be the winner was not. Even the last time I played I thought there was no way I could have won because I had not been able to ship much at all, but low and behold I had won the game.

So I think this is the perfect game because there is never a point in the game where I loose interest and want to just give up.
(Are there any other games like that?)

My only 10. Every turn you have more things that you want to do that you can do. And the thrill of back to back payoffs or a payoff as one of the last cards...pure adrenaline. Every game is different and every game is exciting. House rules that evenly space the payoffs ruin the game in my opinion.

Advanced Squad Leader is my perfect '10'. It has great theme and is a good vehicle for learning WWII history. It is also highly playable (which might come as a surprise to some) and can be scaled from small 30-minute scenarios to great 100+ hours campaigns. Opponents are easy to find and you can even play online through VASL.
