Well? Which was the game that first got you hooked? What was it that turned you into the cardboard sniffing, piece-popping addict that you are today? And on a side note, does it STILL do it for you today?

I remember coming off the back of monopoly (Hate it) Countless card games and rubbish like Ker Plunk watching my older brother and some friends play this and having my tiny mind blown wide open by the possibilities. I was about 7 at the time. I still carry a torch for the game, although my tastes have changed a bit since then. i still get the urge to turn Australasia into a huge Citadel before rampaging across S.E. Asia...

Got this off the shelf at Miller's Department store in Erie in 1969 because it looked 'different' from all the other games. Took it on a weekend camping trip with the explorers and ended up playing it several times. The games went something like this - Step 1) Union advance onto the field, Step 2) entrench, Step 3) Watch the South lose. We were all hooked - created several 'geekbuddies' that weekend that lasted for years. Later it was on to other things like Stellar conquest, Alien Space, Feudal, Starfleet Battles, ad nauseum.

When I was growing up I played alot of D&D. This was the first board game that really enthralled me, I remember loving every minute of it. It was so mysterious and complex (I was in my very early double digits years). From there it progressed to others, esp. the MB Games (Axis and Allies, Conquest of the Empire, Fortress America, Shogun). I have thought about purchasing it on ebay but reconsidered. I'll let it remain the magnificent game it is in my memory.

I started out on US games early in my childhood. However Elfenland started me on my Euro Kick!! I picked up a copy of the Games Magazine Xmas special and chose three games Elfenland, Hare and Tortoise and Enchanted Forest. Hare and Tortoise was missing the wooden Ravensberger dice so I emailed them for a new set. I received an email back from Alan Moon who worked for Ravensberger at the time. He noticed I lived in Massachusetts and invited me to his weekly gaming sessions. Needless to says I accepted his invite and the rest is history. I still enjoy getting a new game in the mail and playing it. The thing I enjoy more than the games however are the people I have met. They are the nicest people!!! Sorry for the long winded message but I though some people might find it interesting.

One Christmas ('81 I think), I got Dark Tower and the Dungeons and Dragons basic set. I have been an √úbergeek ever since. Thank's Dad!

Settlers was my gateway into Eurogames. I remember being completely blown away by this game the first time I played and knowing it was "different" from my other boardgame experiences. I haven't played Settlers in several years having discovered better games but I'll always have a soft spot for this one.

This was the game that introduced me to war games as freshman in high school, which really led me down the road to being a gamer.

I had played many of the standard family games, but none of them really hit the chord which this one did.

Before Exploration, there were Snakes and Ladders, Ludo and Checkers.

During Exploration, my mind was thinking, 'Great game!' The 2 phases of the game did it for me. Ingenious! I was off designing my own games with an outer track and an inner map. One of them was a wargame where the players moved their pawns ala Exploration on the outer track to build up armies and, when they were ready, attack other players' armies on the map.

After Exploration, there were 284 other games and counting...

I've always been inclined toward games. I did the usual Axis & Allies and stuff in High School, and played some Diplomacy in college. Then nothing for a while, and then I got into Diplomacy by email. Then I discovered the world of Sid Sackson and got some of his stuff on eBay.

One day I wanted something new, so I went spelunking on the internet, found out about these "Euros", did some research, and purchased Carcasonne. Now I have more Euros than I can find people to play with, so I go to day-long game sessions approximately monthly and attend the BPA, GCOM, and PrezCon conferences.

Carcassonne doesn't quite "do it" for me as much as it used to, but I still use it as a "gateway" game, and I recently purchased the Inns & Cathedrals expansion. Currently, my favorites are the meatier games that can be played in 2 hours or less.

I was sick of my friends always playing Risk, a game I absolutely despised. I'd heard a lot about Axis and Allies, and had been pressuring them to find a copy and play it. Then one day, Kyle found a flyer in his copy of Axis and Allies: Pacific (which we actually never got around to playing) advertising Battle Cry. Being the huge civil war nut that he was, Kyle immediately purchased it online. When it showed up, we all oohed and aahed over the pieces, and after our first game, we were all hooked.

I immediately purchased my own copy of the game, as well as the Warcraft board game. Then I found this site, and everything just went downhill from there (or uphill, depending upon your point of view). Battle Cry became Memoir '44, Memoir '44 became Heroscape, and Warcraft became Acquire (through trades), and now my collection stands at Heroscape, T&E, Settlers, LotR: Confrontation, Carcassone, Formula De, Acquire, and Game of Thrones.

All because of Battle Cry.

In the kid's section of my library there was a game check-out area. I checked-out Dungeon and loved it. Eventually I convinced my mom to buy it for me. I had other games before this that I enjoyed (Laser Attack, The Haunted Mansion, Star Wars Assault on the Death Star) but Dungeon really grabbed me. Having one TSR game led me into the world of D&D, and then The Gamemaster Series, and so on..The sad part is that I don't know what happened to my game. I tore apart my parent's attic a few years back but no luck... it's gone :<

I went through the typical games when I was growing up - Monopoly, Risk, D&D, etc. When I got to college, I discovered Axis & Allies and SPI's War of the Ring. The true transformation to Board Game Geek happened in the mid/late '90s when a friend introduced us to Settlers, Elfenland, and especially Eurorails.

Eurorails was the first game that I bought, and when my wife and I worked opposite shifts, we would play in 5-turn "blocks" - I would take 5 turns when I was home, she would take 5 turns when she was home, repeat ad nauseum.

We played SO much Eurorails that I haven't hardly been able to stand looking at the box for about 4 or 5 years. I'm finally getting to the point that I'm thinking that I could tolerate a game...

This was the one that turned me into the gaming foo' I am today. Oh sure, I'd played games in my childhood (obsessively, I might add), but had put them aside as childhood passed. Oh sure, I'd try to recreate the joy of those early days, but uh, somehow Payday wasn't as much fun now...

So about three years ago, while doing internet research for math & logic games for the homeschooling group, I stumbled upon the 'geek. (Google Wff n'Proof sometime, the 'geek's on the front page of listings.) Wow, look at all these pretty games, German games they're called? Holy smoke, they're EXPENSIVE!!!! Better pick up a cheap one to start with in case I don't like them - let's see, FLGS has Lost Cities on the clearance rack...

And that was all she wrote! Good thing it was Lost Cities on clearance and not some stinker like Phase 10!!!! Thanks FLGS!!

Clue (actually Cluedo as I'm in the UK) was my 'gateway' game back when I was around 8. Prior to that my gaming had been roll/move type games which were/are boring no decision making at all. Cluedo just blew me away - you had pretty much free movement where you wanted to go, but the chance to move your opponents, and also detective work to do to. It's a game I still play occassionally - and now my 5 year old loves Junior Cluedo (Case of the missing cake)

My latest board game passion phase was really inspired by settlers. It opened my mind up to a much bigger world of board game entertainment.
