Last month I stumbled across this hidden gem.
At the first glance it appears to be a mix of post apocalyptic car race and zombie mayhem.
The pages are printed, I just need to craft it.

An extra appeal for me is the setting: According to the lore, the game revolves around Karlsruhe - the city most of my friends come from.

I didn't get exactly why it has to be Karlsruhe of all places, but - hey - let's give it a shot

What? you ask... The wargames in Vae Victis magazine aren't Print 'n' Play!

Well, they are if you don't want to cut up the magazine, so you scan, print & cut the counters (instead of cutting up the card centre section), then scan & print the play aids (on the back of the counters, usually), and finally reformat & prettify the usually dull text-only English translations...

I have about a dozen VV games to work my way through...

I also built a few non-contest games:

Showtime Hanoi
This game isn't released as PNP but the publisher has a scan of the front and back of the postcard the you can download and print.

Mega Tank
I posted a pretty scathing review of this card and the designer quickly posted an update to the rules to make some improvements. I haven't tried them out, but they look good just from skimming them.

Nova's Ark
I printed this along with the Captain's Chair, Light Speed and Cosmic Encounter expansions. I got really busy with school right after finishing this so I haven't played it yet.

Graveyard Dash: Z-Day

Robot Jocks + the Robot Jocks 2 expansion.
Again, I haven't played these yet. They don't look great but I actually paid for the PDFs so I better at least try it.

I've got several others in progress but I'll save them for when they are actually done.

There are a couple of tweaks to do, but I thought I'd try to get them out there as a v0.9 and I'll work on them when I can. I've done some of the tiles, but not all, and progress will be slower now as we've just had a baby this week. I'll do what I can when I can, but can't guarantee a finish by the beginning of August, though that's what I'll aim for.

I have wanted to do a miniaturized version of this game for several years (~30mm x ~20mm). The original idea was to do them in 'Command & Colors: Ancients' sized blocks, but I never got around to cutting out the wood. I am using chipboard to create tiles instead.

I choose to redo the artwork in a 'Thomas the Tank Engine' theme for my nephews. The artwork is just trimmed screenshots from a train simulator PC game.

I'll get to play with this set sometime next week. I think the fun part will be an 'Engine' draft before we start playing.

Meanwhile, I started to write a blog (in both french and english) dedicated to promoting Print aNd Play in France, where the concept is not widespread.

This blog shyly entitled freourslc EPICtorial session reports and tremendous PNP stuff can be found just here: http://freourslc.blogspot.com/.

My first article about PNP deals with the many tools I use for building my PNP projects. You can read it (in french, sorry), here: http://freourslc.blogspot.com/2011/07/le-print-and-play-mais...
There are many pictures, thus, it is rather easy to understand.

So July has started and we're on the tail end of 2011!

Another busy month for me as usual with the DWSSG project!

My priorities for this month:

1. More work on 'Hollywood' for September. I've really enjoyed doing the work on this one. Some lovely new mechanics (if I do say so myself) and I hope it captures the era well. This is the closest to 'New Adventures, New Beginnings' in style and content and designed so that Hollywood is where the TARDIS could get stuck for a while - or at least be a regular stopping off point if you want to get your Companion into a movie...

2. I put up some Ally cards in mid-June that can be used as play-aids for the game. They add a lot of visuality and mean less writing and recording for players too - always a good thing. Lots more cards are planned over the year with my sights on the first set of some lovely A5 size Enemy cards this month too...

3. The July expansion 'Torchwood' that was submitted by a fan of the game and tidied and edited by me has now been released over at the Yahoo group for the game. This has been requested by a lot of players so I'm glad we can now deliver.

4. The formatting and writing of of August's 'The Cybermen' for the Classic range is now halfway done and I'm hoping to get it all finished in a couple of weeks.

5. The name of the November release is 'The Companion'. This will be a collection of new rules for the game that will add more depth and flavour (quite literally in some cases) to games with lots of new Actions, events and situations that can make Adventures more unique and with lots of fun options.

6. We've started a good discussion about more Actions for the game to open up player choice too - always a good thing. There will be the 6 new Actions with some excellent suggestions, most recently adding 'Challenge' as an Action that will give a new confrontational Action in mid game for brave Characters (mainly the Doctor) as an alternative to Investigate or Seek Information. Take the fight to the Enemy...

7.I'm also starting to think way ahead to December and the 'Eighth Doctor' release and its' worrying lack of pictures!!

Whew!

The family has been playing Plants and Zombies lately, so I decided it was time to finally put this one together.

5 quick prints (with the mental gymnastics to get the front-and-back printing of the rules), some quick trimming, a run through the Xyron machine, stick to mat board, grab the rule and utility knife, and (most importantly as I forgot the last time I cut stuff out, LFMF) place the mat underneath the area I'm cutting.

15 minutes later it was ready.

I've made four copies of this game this month and the last, each one nicer than the one before. The first copy was just knocked up on some old foam core board that the boys had already drawn on with marker. That copy was fun enough that it convinced me to make some for friends and a nicer copy for myself. I've finally gotten the materials and process nice enough that I can make my own "deluxe" version.

...copies made so far:
#1 - Recycled foam core pieces and board
#2 - Hard-board (masonite) mounted board + doubled up cereal packet cardboard mounted chits
#3 - same style as #2
#4 - Hard-board mounted board + chits on wooden Scrabble tiles
Board Game: Scrabble
which are almost perfect (I've printed all of my copies to fit a 8.5x11 page (188% zoom)--not original--so the chits are easier to handle), but not quite square so when you place a doubler tile vertical it does mess up the alignment an acceptably small amount. Sent this off to a friend for his birthday.
#5 (in progress) - Same as #4, and this copy will be for me. Still trying to figure out if there's a way to easily make the Scrabble tiles more square, but, failing that, it still looked really nice. I'll take a picture of this one and post it, as an all-wood set is surprisingly nice looking for a PnP.

This one has been a work in progress since May.

I've printed out the map as nine 7.6x10" segments on permanent, semi-glossy label paper and affixed them to a 23x31" big sheet of hardboard. It worked pretty well, although eyeballing the edges with a crummy rotary cutter led to some inevitable < 1 mm offsets not lining up, but nevertheless I'm reasonably pleased with the result.

For pieces I bought lots of 3/16" wooden dowels and cut them into about 200 1" chunks (think the road segments from Settlers of Catan):
From gallery of BUCKEYE43026
Even though there's only like 90 army units specified, the rules also mention an unspecified number of lower-strength pieces that may need to be swapped in when you lose combat strength. Perhaps I should have gone with 1/4" dowels--we'll see just how playable they are as is. I've been hand-painting these in acrylic paint, then will seal them, then apply the decal for the unit strength that I've printed on label paper. These and the initial placement cubes have all been sanded, but painting them is taking... forever. Maybe it's because I've chosen what is possibly the least efficient possible way to craft them.

Hope to have it done this month, though, and then I can post some photos of the whole thing. Maybe I can post some photos of how it looks so far.

Just crafted the base set by printing the dice faces out on glossy, full sheet label paper and affixing them to 1" wooden cubes that I had painted with gold acrylic paint (to match the borders of the dice faces, and for later easy, color-coded sorting of the expansions if I find the base fun enough).

I'll try and post some pics of my build later today.

We liked Castle Builders so much, that we decided to build this one and try it. We've played a couple games, and at least at default zoom, with thin cardboard chits, this game is very hard to manipulate. It shows some interesting promise, though, although I think it's lacking some of the fun paper-scissors-rock dynamic of it's more Castle-icious cousin. This one was just mounted with spray adhesive to some thick corrugated cardboard for the game board, and some doubled-up cereal packet cardboard for the chits. After a few more plays I can decide if it needs a more deluxe build.

I made this I think about 2 years ago & only played it once (I know, I know). I decided to give this out as a gift but was none too pleased with the cardboard minis just didn't feel presenty enough. So I'm making some little minis out of fimo for it. They are only 1 1/2" high & are more realistic, less cartoony than my usual stuff. I make my fimo stuff in stages & am just going through my 2nd bake. I'm so pleased with how these are turning out. I've been in kind of a dry slump lately so it's nice to feel the creative juices again. It's finished & in the mail.

i finished my project this week: sculpting a reproduction 12th century persian chess set. it was a good experience to try doing this, though my sculpting skills still need a lot of practice. the set was designed to fit on one of my larger self-made chess boards.

if i do this again i definitely need to make the detailing holes much larger

I made this as a game/art project for my nephews and I.

I was intrigued by how different 9x9 Go felt compared to 13x13. And I wanted my own Go sets, but cheap. So I used a foam core board and a yardstick and some Sharpies and made my own:

From gallery of oppenheimer

anti-clockwise, from bottom right:

* 19x19--classic full-sized
* 13x13--classic intermediate
* 11x11--was interesting when I played it on GNUGo and will be fun to explore the differences between 9x and 13x games.
* 9x9--classic small board
* 7x7 through 4x4--illustrative boards, or boards for close fighting to try out ideas before committing them to the game, or just to teach new players some of the basic concepts.

Plus a few pounds of flattened marbles from the craft store which work remarkably well as Go stones.
