The thoughts behind this list are to compile my favorite 10 game releases each year during my time here on the geek. I failed to do so for 2009, which I may go back and do, but this will be my first list...chronicling the 2010 releases that I enjoyed the most. Many of these will be obvious, but some may not be what you expect. That said, feel free to comment, suggest other games, and generally discuss.

Yes...this list is in descending order, and Dominant Species was my top game of 2010. With the level of depth in this quasi-worker placement/area control, I don't foresee it getting old soon. The different species, variable game board, and player interaction will keep this fresh for some time to come. Additionally, the advanced 2 player variant plays well, forcing some attempts at balancing your species success in order to optimize your final score. Only downtime....PLAY LENGTH!

Another lengthy one, this one I actually expected NOT to like. However, the tech tree system (I wasn't familiar with the computer games), the variable player boards, the different nations, and the civilization building aspect really caught my attention. Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to get many plays in, but this one was a gem right from the start.

I typically HATE dice...just despise them, so to see a die-centric game so high up on my list will likely be a rarity. However, Troyes utilizes the dice in such a manner that it is intriguing to me, and minimizes the overall luck by allowing you to purchase dice from your opponents. Seeing the appropriate combinations of dice to use, knowing when to use them, and adapting to the play of others is key in this one. Far from the luck based dice fest of some other dice games out there!

My first foray into 18XX, and what can I say...I love it. This one is pretty simple for the genre it seems, but I love the stock management vs. merchant placement, the decisions whether or not to operate your company, which companies to invest in, etc. This one really does make a good entry point for those interested in the 18XX series, but a little daunted by the heavy train themed games which embody it.

I love Brass...probably my #1 game, and while Age of Industry isn't as good in my eyes, it really does make the game a tad more accessible. Removing the fiddly rules about iron, the 2 scoring rounds, etc. makes this a little easier to teach, a little easier to learn, and quicker to play. It wont replace Brass, but it may serve as a reasonable substitute!

Well of course this had to make the list somewhere. A somewhat Civ like feel in under an hour, for up to 7 players? Genius. Drafting? Even better!

This 2 player card game seems to have slipped largely under the radar. By "Mr. Power Grid" himself, this one is quick and easy to play, with just enough strategy that it doesn't feel like i'm wasting my time. A light filler, but a great game.

A 3 player climbing card game in the vein of Tichu. The trick here is...3 player! Anything that lets me get the feel of Tichu while requiring less players is grand. It wont replace my favorite card game of all time, but it certainly has its own place. Indie Boards & Cards did a great job in publishing this one.

While this is a lot like most area control games, or route building games, or standard euros, it has an element that I really liked. In this one, the leading player must help out the lagging player in certain phases of the game, and second must help out second to last. In this manner the game attempts to balance within, simulating historical events. The game is good enough, but this inclusion of mechanic interested me enough to keep the game on my radar and put it towards the bottom of my top 10 for the year.

Another Dice Game!?!?! Crazy. This one isn't as good as Troyes in my opinion, being more luck based and less interesting, but still offers a decent experience in a relatively short amount of time. I often feel that the game kind of plays itself, but I still enjoy it when I'm playing.

Have to say - I don't keep up with a lotta recent games,
especially the hyped ones. But, this has a nice mix of
euro and more traditional concepts, integrated with
a movement system completely divorced from time.

Interesting game - if nothing else - in a genre that
hasn't been touched effectively since Triplanetary

It is a fast and fun Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock type game (not exactly but multiple things that beats things). My Mom loves it.

The most fun I've had playing anything, nothing excepted. And I expect this to continue be the case for the foreseeable future.

Squad-level skirmishing was never so fun; we knew it the moment my opponent escaped from inextricably trapped circumstances by breaking through the wall of a room to escape. My vocabulary got a workout over that one.

I look forward to every Monday and Friday night, because I know this is what I'll be playing.
