Grimwold's new-to-you geeklists are the highlight of my month on the 'geek. They motivate me to review the new games I've played (and recycle my entries as comments), and they allow me to read the thoughts of some of the most insightful 'geeks on new and classic games.

But the new-to-me list is inevitably full of first impressions. I'm interested in hearing how those games that seemed so great at the time stood up to multiple plays. Did you actually play them that much after the first month? Did a game you dismissed at the time turn out to be better in retrospect?

Add an entry with the same game you chose for the New to you Jul 10 geeklist. Link to your entry in that geeklist, then write down your thoughts on the game you chose a year on. If your impression of some of the other games you wrote up that month have changed, let us know about that too.

The big game that month was Egizia - has it stood the test of time?

I'll be starting these lists mid-month, so we don't have to keep up with this list and Grimwold's (and several other monthly ones) all at the same time. You can subscribe to the announcement thread for reminders.

This didn't seem like a great month at the time, and it's no better in retrospect.

Quoridor has had a couple of plays since, but it's not one I get excited about (maybe because I suck at it).

Times Square got one more play after July but it fell into that unfortunate niche of 2p-only games that aren't complex enough for me and my main gaming buddy, but which my wife doesn't like either, and so it got traded away.

No more plays for Moongha Invaders: Mad Scientists and Atomic Monsters Attack the Earth!, Tales of the Arabian Nights or Tower of Babel, though I wouldn't say no to the last of those - seemed like one of those Knizias that might well have subtleties to unravel.

This was far from a classic month for me. I bought two games and one other was introduced to our group. Only one still gets played at all, and that's mostly online, as none of them really resonated with us.

Roll Through the Ages
This is a game I like a lot and my girlfriend and I fell in love with it out of the box. My group didn't take to it though, as it seemed too light and lucky for strategy while not being fun or silly enough to be a dice-rolling filler. My girlfriend and I stuck with it, and played a lot for a few months, but once we'd worked out the optimal route to go down it began to feel more and more luck based - whoever got closest to that optimal would probably win. It's still on my shelf, mainly because I love the bits, but it's only hit the table once this year. I've also downloaded the additional rules, but am yet to explore them properly. I do still play a bit on Yucata as a nice light distraction, but again there is a certain feeling that I'm going through the motions. I wouldn't be surprised if this is out of my collection this time next year.

Money
I bought this after playing the iPod app and thought it would be a good introduction into bidding games for our little group. It fell very flat though, and I after just a few plays it was drawing blank expressions of boredom. Much like Roll Through The Ages, it didn't have enough 'fun' to fulfil the filler role or enough theme, depth etc to be a main event. As it doesn't play two-player I didn't have the option of playing with my girlfriend, although to be honest I couldn't see her taking to it either - she really doesn't like Ra, which my group have really taken too. I ended up giving it away in December as an extra in my Secret Santa gift - hopefully it went to a happier home. I do still play the app on my iPod from time to time though, as I still like the game enough to pass some time away on the train etc.

Thunderstone
Probably the only game on BGG that can get my heckles up. Luckily I didn't waste my own money on this, but I was fooled into thinking it was a nice game for about four plays - the nerd in me looked on starry eyed, but the gamer in me won out. The next plays were torturous and if I never see this on a table again it will be too soon. Take the elegance of Dominion, paste on a more nerd friendly theme and add an ill thought out 'dungeon' mechanic to (in some way at least) differentiate yourself from the game you've ripped off. Utter garbage. I hear things improved with expansions but giving away a free gold house with each copy wouldn't get me to put my hand in my pocket for this rubbish. OK, that might be a lie, but you get my drift. In my humble opinion, Thunderstone is an awful waste of space of a game - other opinions are available.

A year ago, I'd played only two new games. I enjoyed both of them at the time: and roughly with the same enthusiasm. I rate both Egizia and Leonardo da Vinci a _7.3_.

Last year, I'd thought Egizia might be a bit in the lead. I'd played a friend's copy once a year ago - and liked it enough to buy my own. But I've not played it at all since (which, in retrospect, is sad: I'd love to get it back to the table.)

Leonardo da Vinci was ascendant for a while. My first play was with my lovely daughter #1 - who won the first time out. We've played a couple times since, and I've played once with another set of friends. But I think we'd concluded it was both too nasty and too random (that is, it was too easy to be accidentally nasty; we'd've been more satisfied with a greater fraction of intentional nastiness, I think) to demand a return to the table.

So, all considered, my reflections of last year's new games are a bit melancholy: nice enough games, but not ones that have consistently got to the table.

Two games last year. Two very good games actually. What I said then and what I say now.

Quote:
Snow Tails - Rated 8

Yeah I truly loved this game. I am looking forward to playing all the tracks that come outlined in the back of the booklet as well as testing out the Leap of Death I received with the game. I rated it an 8 as I always downgrade slightly if I get the feeling it wasn't as loved by those around me. Everyone certainly enjoyed it and it will be played some more but it didn't excite them as it did me. My friend said I looked so contented while playing it and was euphoric afterwards as well. This could make it to a 9 rating for me and I can happily recommend it to anyone.

I really loved this game and because it didn't excite the other people I played with (specifically my wife) I have not played this game again. I recently put away 4/5th of my games in boxes while we finish the basement and this game made the cut to be kept upstairs simply because of my fond memories from a year ago. I thnk the 8 was a fair assessment for this game and it deserves to be played once a month.

Quote:
Trivial Pursuit: Bet You Know It - Rated 7

I know this game is getting a lot of hate right now but it is a pretty good game for what it is - Trivial Pursuit. This was a fun little version of Trivial Pursuit. It borrows some from Wits and Wagers but this will be said by everyone, and it has enough of it's own peculiarities to make it be fun. There seems to be a huge divide in some of the questions "difficulty" levels, in my opinion. I base this on how many people in our group knew the answer to some of the questions and how hard it "felt". Defintiely will be played more, and I may buy it when it comes out. I would recommend this to peopel who have a lot of non-gamer friends who actually enjoy trivia but don't have the time for a full game of Trivial Pursuit. I think it completely deserves the 7 rating I gave it.

Not a bad game at all. Since this wasn't my copy we played it hasn't been played again. I have seen it many times at Walmart but the price just doesn't seem to sit well enough with me yet. I think it plays very well for a trivia game (a genre I very much enjoy but have a hard time finding people who share this enjoyment). I would like to play it more and again the 7 seems fair.

My other game from a year ago was Tinners' Trail and i didn't get a copy of this for my collection. It's pretty cool but Wallace games are always tough to get played so I've not bought it.

This was one of only three new games a year ago. I've played it a few more times in the past year, so, yeah, it's stood the test of time. There are some commercial games out there that do basically the same thing, but it works just fine with pencil and paper.

In order of the original entry

Uruk: Wiege der Zivilisation
Plays since: 2

Still like this a lot. It's small and easy to carry, so it's one of our go to games for taking on vacations, leading to 2 plays, one in Boston and one in Bermuda.

Dominion: Intrigue
Plays since: a bunch

As said in the original list, I'm not a dominion freak, but enjoy it every now and then. Plays are hard to count, with using the random 10 card technique. I still see this as an expansion, thus Uruk as the entry.

Acquire
Plays since: 0

No surprise I haven't played this since, I don't own it. A couple of times I've thought about acquiring (heh) a used copy, so that says something.

The only game I replayed from the July 2010 bunch since July 2010 is Callisto (which is also the only game I own from the bunch). It has a lot to do with the fact that my daughter was born on the 2nd August and after that usually we didn't have enough time for longer games and we didn't even play a lot - so quite often I introduced my wife to something new (as my shelves are full of unplayed games).
So what do I think about Callisto? It's fast, simple, it's like Blokus but still different (as for originality, see my review). Nothing more than a spatial abstract filler but I like it and a spatial abstract filler is fine if you have only 15 minutes to play.

The rest:
I would like to play Shipyard, O Zoo le Mio, Haggis again, any time. Maybe if I watch the series or read the books I'm going to give another try to A Game of Thrones. I don't really feel the need to play Thebes, Jerusalem, Chocolatl, Wazabi again...

Last July, Battlestar Galactica was my best new game. It really wasn't a contest, and it remains the same one year later today.

Battlestar Galactica: 1 play last July, 26 plays since. I rate BSG a 10, and it is in my top ten games. It was the centerpiece for my semi-regular game group made of up non-gamers and fringe gamers from work. Given 5 players and enough time, BSG is my game of choice. Or would that be Container? Damn.

Clue The Museum Caper: 3 plays last July, 0 plays since.
This really is a good game, especially considering the $.50 price tag on it (it was a thrift find). It's a good, short, light game. Not sure if it'll see the light of day again. If it were worth money, I probably would have sold it by now - I tend to sell or trade games if they're sitting unplayed for too long.

The Golden City: 1 play last July, 0 plays since.
A good eurogame that doesn;t really break any new ground, but it's solid. Had I found this game early on in my time in the hobby, I probably would have played the heck out of it. I no longer own this, though I certainly wouldn't turn down a play of it if offered.

Elementalis: 1 play last July, 0 plays since. Not a fan of this one. It's gone.

Poor Lemmings.

Yes, it has. I still think this a great idea and lovely game and would never say no to a game, especially when played with the charades variant which we infamously discovered while playing the game in a long overnight session in some deserted London office.

I love playing the fellowship and trying new ideas out. I haven't played it in month. One problem i am having is the one guy who i was playing it with doesn't feel like playing it anymore. He seems to like to play games in the winter and not so much in the summer.

and i usually only have time to play Warhammer Invasion with my brother since we have to get 3 games of that in every weekend.

so for some reason i am having trouble finding and opponent...

Of the three games I felt stood out, two have held up. I've played Founding Fathers more, and not having played it for a while I've been trying to get it back to the table. And I finally got 18Neb recently, and have found it quite enjoyable. Armorica lasted through four plays for me, but after the first couple they were going in the wrong direction.

Both Babel and Tigris & Euphrates were somewhat enjoyable and I want to dig into the strategy under the outright nastiness of play. The former we own, so really I have no good excuse. Maybe I'll request it soon. The latter is owned by our friends, so I'll have to find some reason to wander over to their place and ask that we dust it off.

Not a lot to say here because my choice was the latest in a game series I already liked. I've only played 10 Days in the Americas six times, and most of those were combination games with other of the 10 Days. I'd like to play more of this game on its own (which would surely help my grasp of Caribbean geography) and also smooth out the rules for 50 Days.

Other games from last July:
purpletrain Mexican Train. This maybe should've been my pick. I've played 5 times since last year. Not the deepest, most complex game ever, but oddly enjoyable. Mixes well with family or conversation.
greentrain Scandaroon. 4 plays but all last July. I finally got around to learning this game, taught it to everyone I could get hold of, and then... nothing. Not a bad game at all, and all but one person liked it pretty well. I think maybe it's just a game that doesn't get to the table without some effort because it's not well-known, and it didn't knock anyone out enough for the effort to happen.
bluetrain Plaplak. Card game of supposedly Hungarian origin. Not in BGG database and no one seems to have heard of it, Played 3 times but it's been a while. Just thinking last weekend that we'd like to play it again--hope I can find the rules.

Last year I chose Tales and Legends as best new game. I still agree with my comments from back then: "I wouldn't add it every time, and wouldn't recommend with new players, but it was a lot of fun." Got some more plays, but not a lot.

Haggis didn't get played again, but we really should give this another try as we both really like Tichu and it does feel somewhat similar.

Phenomena got played once more, we had fun again, but it's not so great that it ever got requested after that.

Wizard got another play, it's a nice enough game, but we have a lot of other card games that we like better than this one.

No extra plays for Metropolys either, it was ok, but I'm not big on auctions, so I wouldn't request this, and no-one else has either.

The Pirates of the Caribbean Pirate Game and Die Drei Magier didn't get anymore plays, as I didn't really enjoy them. Henafatafl didn't get played again either. I still have no idea what King Arthur: The Card Game is all about, it didn't get another play. Neither did Pignus Mania, and I don't really remember what that was all about now. To end the list of games I wasn't thrilled about, Onexeno didn't get played again either.

So it was a lot of new games last year, and only 3 of them ended up getting more plays. Those were three of the four I was positive about, so I guess I still (mostly) agree with what I said a year ago.

Pretty much none of the games I played last July ever got played again.
The seem like a fine batch of games but have all proved forgettable over the last year.

Arena: Roma II x2, no plays since

The Adventurers x1, no plays since

Careers x1, no plays since, thought my kids might like it but they want games where they can kill something.

The Hanging Gardens x1, no plays since

Innovation x1, 1 play since. Wanted to like this one as I love Glory to Rome but it didn't do anything for me.

Peloponnes x1, no plays since. My highest rated of the batch with a 7.5 and I took a note that I was interested in buying it at the time but can't remember much about it now.

The Settlers of the Stone Age x1, not plays since

Zombies!!! (Second Edition) x1, not plays since and hopefully ever, very bad game.

Expansions:
Peloponnes Erweiterung

Small World: Tales & Legends, my least favorite expansion so far, just is not needed.

Here is my original entry to the geeklist: Item for Geeklist "New to you Jul 10 => Best new game you played this month and why"

Here are my updated comments (in the order I ranked them in the original entry):

1 = We Didn't Playtest This At All: Chaos Pack (Played 1 time since July 2010) - We played this expansion a whole ton last July, and I really have no idea why it hasn't found its way back to the table much since then. I love the wackiness this expansion adds to an already wacky game. However I do fear a couple of the cards (making up nicknames, or the one that flips left-to-right, rock-to-paper, etc.) Despite this I imagine it's only a matter of time before the expansion returns in our sessions of WDPTTAA. One of the funniest games we ever played of this game was when we had the imaginary player and that guy won the game. Those kind of laugh-out-loud moments make this expansion entirely worthwhile, and something that I will always consider when I bring out the base game.

2 = Portrayal (Played 2 times since July 2010) - When I first read reviews of this game I was 100% confident that I would hate it. A couple of podcasts even ran through sample rounds that I tried to participate in and I felt nothing but aggravation. But then a great geekbuddy bought me a copy of the game, so I was obligated to try it with my family. This now easily fits in my Top 10 party games of all time! I usually hate drawing games and yet somehow this game manages to make my horrible artistic ability the funniest thing I've ever seen. I have literally been in tears from laughing so hard at some of the mixed-up drawings that come from this game. It will never leave my collection, and if I was resorting this list today it would take the top spot.

3 = PitchCar Mini: Special Long Straights (Not played since July 2010) - This is another great expansion, yet it hasn't managed to hit the table since July. However unlike We Didn't Playtest This At All: Chaos Pack I know exactly why this one has been neglected. It's all about transportation. These long straights really add something to the game, but they don't fit in the original box. So now I find myself forgetting to bring them when I grab the base game. I want to play with them again soon, but they do require a larger table, so I need a special situation. I'm sure they won't go another year unplayed, and now that I have another expansion it will be cool to build one long race track.

4 = Dominion: Envoy Promo Card (Played 6 times since July 2010) - I'm still a little confused about how to handle these promo card expansions. I mean I love the game Dominion, and rate it and all its expansions a 10, and a little more variety is always good. But I don't "always want to play" a single card. I mean the key to Dominion is the variety. Anyways I do like how this card works, and it leads to some tough decisions. It is one that I will gladly play any time it comes up in a random draw of kingdom cards.

5 = Dominion: Black Market Promo Card (Played 1 time since July 2010) - I'm not sold on this one at all. I mean the idea is absolutely awesome. Having a one-of-a-kind card in your deck is a major bonus. However the execution is not so awesome. The card can slow the game to a crawl as players decide what to buy. Perhaps with a bunch of players who really know all the cards it wouldn't be so bad, but as it stands I will often pass over this card if I draw it in a random selection.

21. Board Game: Homesteaders [Average Rating:7.27 Overall Rank:596]

Favourite Now
Homesteaders would have been my favourite game for the month last year (had I actually posted on the list cry ), and it retains its high position in my rankings. There's a sense of ingenuity that I really enjoy when assembling a chain of conversions. After 6 games in July 2010 my played dropped precipitously off (6 times in the 11 months since) and my skills completely fell apart (I seem to accidentally wipe out my income stream in the first couple of turns). However this is a game that I really want to play more and improve at. Homesteaders is a strategic (rather than tactical) game and I want to get past the stage of considering turns in isolation to see game-long schemes come together, and to perceive and obstruct those of my opponents. It's logistically convenient (2-4 players, 60 minute duration) but my groups prefer heavier fare.

Indifferent Now
A year ago I would have run screaming from Leaping Lemmings (and almost did after one game). Since then my group has played it enough as an end-of-night filler to understand how the game works so my second play was a vast improvement: no mind-numbing AP, and an easily explainable method to the chaos. Still not a game I'd choose to play, but better than I thought a year ago.

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game was decent enough when I played it a year ago, with novel diplomatic elements added to the standard tricky CCG-style effects. However a subsequent game solidified my view that games with pre-game deckbuilding are too much effort for me, in particular understanding the special effects and interactions of a growing card pool. The milquetoast combinations of Dominion or Small World, or the far less frequently expanded Race for the Galaxy are far easier to pick up and play, and are about the level of dedication I'm prepared to give. Even if someone else built the A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, I would be neither a strong nor an engaged opponent for him.

Another play of The End of the Triumvirate only convinced me that map-combat-oriented games just aren't my thing.

Unplayed Positive
Vampire: Prince of the City was kind of interesting, and I'd try it again as an experience game.

I played Pickomino's cousin Sushizock im Gockelwok - they're both okay as fillers.

Unplayed Negative
The Princes of Machu Picchu was okay when I played it, but without the novelty value of a first play there wasn't much subsequent appeal. There are lots of good Euros and this just didn't stand out enough for me to want to hone my skills at it (it didn't help that others in my group were much more experienced).

I can see how Dice Town would appeal to a certain crowd, and I really like the style of interaction presented by the dice (roll, peer at opponents, then decide what to go for), but it's not my kind of game. The bribery, theft, and card randomness don't appeal to me (ironically the dice randomness is fine), and the gameplay is rather repetitive.

Axis & Allies: 1942 - never again. Play Nexus Ops instead for the same combat system and capturing resources to build more units, within a 90 minute rather than 180+ minute timeframe.

I hope you are not going to mind me adding this game since it was not actually added as a new game on Grimwold's lists. I only played it toward the end of June for the first time and in my hurry to post forgot to add it on the June list. Then, in July it was no longer a new game so again I did not post it. (EDIT) Furthermore, I had no other new games to add on the July list. (Edit complete) However I had posted this game on Spacehulk's list, Your best gaming experience of the month and why July 10. This is what I wrote then:
I guess I would have to award this honour to Ingenious and not to just one game but to many. It was a mostly new game to me this month and I played it 14 times in July. I had some awesome experiences with my daughter both winning and getting royally beat. My favorite time was getting all 6 ingeniouses (the sixth on the last move of the game!) before she had even one color in the second half! She never let that happen again!

This is what I say now:
This game impacted me a lot when I first played it in June/July 2010 and I can honestly say now that it is one of the games I am most happy to have purchased. It has now been played 52 times in a mere year and has in no way lost its appeal. While I am not normally a huge abstract fan, there is something about this game that is hugely addicting and fun. And 3 of my daughters all love it as well! This is one of those games that is a 'must have' in your collection.

Battleline was and remains my top choice from a year ago and it has certainly stood the test of time as my favorite two player card game. Though as my wife and I have gotten better at it we've played it a bit less as experience leads to more thinky and frustrating games and its just not the wind down your day sort of game we first thought it was.

Antike unfortunately has not been played since (part time game group participant copy...). I think with a few more plays this could have nudged BattleLine off the top of my list! This remains the only Rondel game I've played and I really should remedy that eventually...

My third game will be more valuable once the girls are older (Gwen and I have yet to pull it out this year...) but last year's comments still hold true: Labyrinth was an add on to a trade that I thought my daughter would grow into in a couple of years... but I didn't realize how much my wife and I would enjoy this relaxing puzzle game in the mean time! Its fun to move the tiles around the maze and the blocking at the end game can get pleasantly vicious and a little brain burny.

New to Me July 2010

July is normally a good month for me but last year I played a raft of new expansions and only 2 new games.

New Last July

Qwirkle

Plays Since - 22
Rating - Still a 7

This actually didn't win my top prize but it should have as I gave the honour to an expansion (by a half star)...which I think is kind of wrong in retrospect.

This is still no deep and meaningful game but it is perfect for the light/medium category and attracts those non-gamers like my Mum. As such I have racked up a further 22 plays since last July and will happily play this when it suits the crowd I am with.

The biggest issue with the game for me is that it does suffer from seat position. If a player is sitting behind someone who isn't paying attention or doesn't recognise the potential to open up a Qwirkle then it can be maddening. You have to accept that risk for what it is or stop playing the game.

Monopoly Deal Card Game

Plays Since - 7
Rating - Still a 6

My comments were generally positive about this one despite the rating but that really was a case of having low expectations and being somewhat surprised.

This is really only good for those family holidays at the beach when you are tired and want to play something really light with the kids.

Hasbro's Yahtzee Hands Down Card Game s better than this at the same weight though.

All of the following games (expansions) have not seen another play since last June mainly because they were played for the purpose of reviewing them.

Carcassonne: Abbey & Mayor thumbsup
HeroQuest: The Return of the Witch Lord
Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game – We’ve Got to Go Back!
Carcassonne: Bridges, Castles & Bazaars
Carcassonne: Cult, Siege & Creativity

= Into my collection
nuclear = Rubbish the first time
thumbsup = Games good enough for my collection

They explained everything in detail and at great length. After they finished I sat, despondent, contemplating a bleak and empty future. "I’m glad you’re depressed" said one. "It means you’ve understood the situation.”

Dice Town

A fun little game that played quite well. Took a little while to get into the swing of it, bit once we were away it played very well.

Black Powder

Played an ACW battle. Not a bad system, almost as chaotiic as Warmaster. Good for social miniatures gaming..

This is now

Haven't played Dice Town since. Not through not liking it, but as i don't own a copy I have not had ready access.

Have played a few more Black Powder Battles, including the War of Spanish Succession and the Franco Prussian War (FPW).

I am s-l-o-w-l-y rebasing my FPW miniatures onto 40x30 bases for Black Powder; so it's a winner!
