Game day weekend!

2011-07-16 - Our monthly game day! We had a great turn out (around 30 throughout the day), and had some guests. Jeremiah_Lee travelled the almost two hour trip to come, and my mom was down from upstate NY and attended. It was an awesome day of games with good friends. I got into an incredibly awesome game of The Resistance, and experienced my first ever "Everyone but one person wins" game of Cosmic Encounter. Of course I was the one person, but that is what I get for going for the Solo win and refusing all allies.
The Resistance x2
Modern Art
Snow Tails
Werewolf x2
Illuminati: Deluxe Edition
Run Wild
Wizard
Ticket to Ride
Can't Stop
Cosmic Encounter x2
Puzzle Strike x3

2011-07-17 - A laid back Sunday of rest after a hardcore game day. We had my friend ZombieEarl over for a few games and pizza during the evening.
Pandemic x2
Clans
Glory to Rome

This weekend was an excellent weekend for gaming.

Friday
Defenders of the Realm + Defenders of the Realm: The Barbarian x1
Ascension: Deckbuilding Game + Ascension: Return of the Fallen + All Promos x3

So Friday's game of Defenders of the Realm was my first solo game and the first time I used the Barbarian character. It was a really fun experience and I must say that the Barbarian is really quite the juggernaut for wiping out large hordes of minions.

All 3 games of Ascension on Friday were fun and each game was very distinct. Our first game my wife really scored a lot of points with a pair of combustion idols, reclamax and a socket alter. The extra card drawing from the combustion idols was a decisive advantage.

Saturday
Ascension: Deckbuilding Game + Ascension: Return of the Fallen + All Promos x4

Four games of Ascension on Saturday which we split 2 to 2. She had completely dominating game where she acquired within the first six or seven turns a pair of Flytrap Witches, Nairi Henge Queen, Lunar Stag and an Arbiter of the Precipice for deck thinning. Needless to say she won and by a wide margin (40pts).

I managed a couple of victories of my own defeating some very large creatures (Samael, Avatar, a couple of Tyrants and Xeron) during one game for a win and managing to dump some big mechana constructs into the void (Hedron Cannon + others) to be fished back out with Reclamax.

Sunday
Ascension: Deckbuilding Game + Ascension: Return of the Fallen + All Promos x1

One final round for the weekend where my wife had a squeaker of a victory winning by just 3 points and her use of Project Alpha was just enough for the victory.

This was a great weekend for gaming!

As I had just finished my PnP version of this

we had a couple of games over the weekend when visiting the grandson (oh, and his mum and dad). The games are short enough to fit in whilst the aforementioned cutest grandchild in the world was asleep, gathering up more energy for further sessions of wrapping his grandparents round his little fingers.

The games were reasonably successful, but only reasonably so, since they managed to highlight some of the known problems with the game. In the first game the daughter-in-law (who comes with a PhD in something complicated to do with biochemistry, and thus is not stupid) managed to score one of her guesses wrong. So, of course, everyone's conclusions were wrong. OOoopps.

The second game finished without any such issues. However, one letter (K, FWIW) had not yet appeared on any allegation cards. My son happened to have this in hand, and thus knew it was not one of the secret cards. The rest of us had not been able to do any investigation of this at all. JUst one of those little quirks of fate.

I have just got hold of a German copy of this (it is language independent, and there are scans of the English rules on here, so there was no issue in it being a German copy) which I found lurking in the market for not very much.

This is a silly little programming game, where the players have to build paths from one side of the river to another, by placing stones on small islands, and then planks between the stones. The programming is that you decide on 5 moves in advance (where moves are things like placing one or two stones or planks, moving a space or two or jumping over an opponent, picking up a stone or plank, or cancelling an opponents move). So chaos ensues. As long as everyone is OK with that, it is great. Lots of banter, and laughter when someone's move was impossible so they fell off the plank into the river, and had to start again, etc., and no one really minded who won.

All and all a great success for what it was. No one would suggest that it is other than a light filler, but it filled admirably.

This rather nifty miniatures game. It replaces dice with playing cards in a way that actually adds somehting worthwhile, and combines interesting mechanics with neat background and visuals.

Did not get as much gaming in as I'd have liked but:

Had my first game of Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game on Saturday at one my local FLGS (was also using the Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game – Pegasus Expansion expansion as well). A very good game, highly enjoyed it, especially since I ended up being a Cylon and those fleshy humans never had a chance. Hope to get more sessions in.

Played a couple rounds of Crokinole with the wife at the same shop, as well as a hand of Car Wars: The Card Game with the youngest.

Saturday night, managed to get part of the clan I've been with as well as a couple "RL" friends for many back to back games of Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

Early on Sunday, I advanced the plot line in Mass Effect 2.

That evening the wife and I played a game of Stronghold, which is rapidly becoming our favorite. Only quibble with the game is I have a difficult time telling the red and green invader cubes apart, so she is going to be putting a black dot on all the green cubes so I can play without getting a headache.

Through out the weekend, for my other "geek related" project, I made a hexagonal dice box. Had some scrap wood laying around. The stain isn't as nice as I'd like, but I may put up some pix at some point.

Yesterday my friend had challenged me to help her try a Christmas gift she had yet to use - a canning kit. We love to go to the farmer's market for fresh produce, but can never buy much. Could we learn what our grandmothers knew how to do? So we tried our first batch and went with just pickling cucumbers. The process is a bit lengthy, however, so the only solution? Games!

We started with a quick game of Atlantis. I had a good chance to win as I was way out in front and was controlling when the game would end. But I'd given up too much early and lost by a few points.

Next we taught Liz & Austin to play Oregon, which I think went over well. The strategy of this game takes awhile to get a grip on, which allowed me to win by a substantial margin. I'm sure we'll be bringing it back to the table now that everyone gets it.

Lastly we learned TtR: Europe, which is a version we hadn't played yet. Wow - was it stressful! We added in the Alvin & Dexter expansion, but found they got very little use because locomotives were so valuable in this game. Scott won in a surprise upset.

How unexpected: I brought Chaos in the Old World: The Horned Rat Expansion to the table again and made people play it! This was a 4p game without Nurgle, and I was Morrsleib Khorne for the first time. The others were very defensive and I didn't tick at all first turn, while the Horned Rat got a double-tick. The other players took aim at him, and Slaanesh emerged as the front runner, with consistent ticks (including a double-tick) as well as Fall from Grace. I finally was able to select the Bloodletter upgrade, aiming for the shiny new Khorne VP victory (it helped that dial victory was out of reach). Sneaky positioning and all-out attacks on Slaanesh netted me second and first place in the two ruinations, and Bloodletter-led slaughter through the game got me 12VP, pushing me to 55VP in the fourth turn for the win.

It was deja vu as the next game we pulled out was 4p Ascending Empires. This game was rather acrimonious as "did the ships collide" and "why don't you stop attacking me" arguments embroiled the players. Nevertheless, the player with the best strategy (most importantly getting purple techs that give you points when others ram you - as we were all hopeless at flicking) had a well-deserved victory.

I finished off with 3p König von Siam, which at this point is really annoying me. From very early on, I engineered a Malay victory in the final province, with all out last cards being the "place two blue"; however I couldn't handle the combinatorial searching and maybe lost the game with my last play (I still don't know, despite replaying it afterwards). It seems that König von Siam requires the kind of careful calculation that I dislike: despite clever longer-term strategy, a single bad endgame play can give someone else the victory. Or maybe I'm looking at things the wrong way.

No games played at all this weekend.

We went to my sister and husbands grand housewarming event at their log house by the lake. It was a camping weekend and the weather was beautiful (30 C or 88 F). Lots of swimming and fishing (my daughter caught a 3 lb rainbow and a 4-1/2 lb pickerel) and they had a live band/dance in a pavilion style tent Saturday night. (An awesome band at that but only local! I swear the lead guitarist could be on the same page as Eric Clapton, Coin James, Mark Knopfler. Amazing!)

Anyway, no games, but a very satisfying and enjoyable weekend.

Friday:
JAB: Realtime Boxing
Glen More

Saturday & Sunday:
1860

We didn't get started on 1860 until Saturday evening, and since it was our first game of it, it didn't get finished until Sunday afternoon. My SO enjoyed it more than 1825 (she won, so she should have), but less than Steam Over Holland. I don't feel like I understand the game well enough to have much of an opinion yet - I liked it, and really enjoyed seeing how the tile upgrades restrict things, but I have no clue yet how to make bankruptcy and insolvency work for me. It's all those differences that make 1860 of interest for me, but I have no idea how to manipulate those differences. SoH is more straightforward, I feel like I know what I'm doing, but (at least with 2) that game would wear out its welcome without the 15 round time limit.

I also got my preorder of JAB, which I bought on a whim, intrigued by the idea of a real-time card game that actually claims to have some thinking involved. Surely there should be thinking involved, but so far in our one game it was more awkward slapping cards down or paralysis trying to understand even semi-optimal plays. The system is just a little non-intuitive, unless you've played a lot of Set and Jungle Speed, which I haven't - it has mechanics more intricate than either of those. Time will tell.

Now we're just waiting for A Few Acres of Snow to make its appearance...

Well, lets start with the easy stuff. I finished up 3 games of Through the Ages at boardgaming-online.com over the weekend, winning one I have no idea how I won, losing one because I counted resources wrong and just getting edged out in a 3rd. I also finished up a game of Hacienda at spielbyweb.com and played a bunch of 7 Wonders and Race for the Galaxy against the AI.

The Texas & Pacific game above was an online game via VASSAL/Skype/Google Docs with 3 friends. It was only my 2nd game of T&P, and I came in 2nd, losing by $1 in a relatively tight game overall. I enjoyed it, although I still really have no clue about strategy (my 2nd place finish was not from some grand master plan).

Saturday also had face to face gaming. We started off with Small World Underground which is, well, the exact same game as Small World with a few twists and the new races. Which doesn't make it bad. If you like Small World (which I do), then I think you'll enjoy this. Then we played Merkator, which I really like, and which overall got mixed reception. I think its a fast playing, easy to learn game which has a lot of strategy to it and a lot of variability. We wrapped up with a quick game of Who Would Win, which is frankly a very silly game, yet fun. Playing with 4 was okay, I think with 5 or more it would get even better, and its easily accessible to all.

This was a good gaming weekend, now back to the real world!

Very hot weekend here in western NY, perfect for staying in the AC and doing some gaming.

My girlfriend and I tried out two new games(To us)

Jambo - Really liked this game, very simple to understand but looks like it has a decent amount of underlying strategy. She won, by a lot. yuk

51st State - Wow, great game. I LOVE the theme. the rulebook however can be a little overwhelming at first glace due to all the iconography and such, but once we started playing everything clicked and we enjoyed it quite a bit. I won our first game cool

And then our staples..
Dominion x 2
Carcassonne x1

Overall a good weekend for us. Eagerly awaiting my order of Claustrophobia and Summoner Wars: Master Set!

This weekend, I played 3 solo games of Arkham Horror. This is a new game to me, and I am just loving it! I won my first game (but realized I was playing some of the rules wrong), then I won my second game, but last night in my third solo game, I got killed. I ended up having to face the ancient one and got slaughtered pretty quick, but I still had a great time. Great game!

We had a great 5 player game on Saturday night. I had to drive through a monsoon rainstorm to my friend's house about 30km away. The game was well worth the travel though. The usual players showed, but the winning players were all reversed. Bruce, who usually wins was last, Marc who is usually last got 2nd, Matt who lost badly last time won, I was still in the middle (no change) and Todd who usually comes 2nd was 4th. Quite unexpected and refreshing.

Got in a three player of the favorite classic. It was a close affair in which Dracula had managed to elude the hunters for a good part of the game. He came out early the first night to try and score a point and managed to bite Dr Seward. I was lucky to get away and hide till late in the game when I was found again. There was a battle I was able to knock out Van Helsing. Still, with one point left to go and daytime around. The Hunters found me a killed me.
While still a long game, it was fun!

Dominion
I also broke out this game. I got in two game with two different people. While the game is fun, and I enjoyed myself, I do think I like Thunderstone better, if not for the theme alone.

Hammer of the Scots- I played two games of HoTS. One as the English and the other as the Scots. Won both. I love this game. I never tire of playing it.

Liberty: The American Revolution 1775-83- Played this one for the first time. As usual we made mistakes playing it. The naval movement/attack rules are a little tricky. I look forward to getting this one back to the table soon while I still remember the rules. I think I will enjoy it more the second time playing the navies properly. I lost this one as the English.

Julius Caesar-I was Pompey and won as Ceasar sued for peace in the second to last year. My friend is thinking it is too hard to win with Ceasar playing someone who knows the game. I would like to try Ceasar next time to see just how hard it is. This game gets better every time I play. There are a lot of interesting decisions and different paths to victory. I still think contoling the seas is one of the most important things to do in this game.

Black Gold- Played this one for the first time. It is the American reprint of Giganten. I went last in a five player game and got crushed. The other players were all very close. An interesting game that I would like to play again now that I understand the rules and mechanics better.

El Grande- Every time I play this game I remember why I like it so much. This may be one I have to add to my collection. I lost a close five player game by two points.

Notre Dame- Played this one for the first time. Easy to learn and plays fast. I lost a close four player game. The winner used the one section that gives him an extra point and since he had four cubes there he managed to pick up an extra two points every time he scored. that was definately the difference.

Le Havre- A long and at time frustrating game as you always are so close to breaking out if you can only do two or three extra things instead of worrying about feeding your people. The winner of this one crushed the rest of us as she had four ships. I really need to get a better understanding of the buildings and ships in this one.

Alien Frontiers- And lastly I played this one with three other players. I got off to a great start but lost on the placing of the last colony. This one is a little frustrating as well as you can really be stiffled if you don't get the dice roles you need. There are so many decisions and combinations that come into play that this is a game that could definately be prone to AP. Not one of my favorites.

Unfortunately, I forgot to log the session on Vassal, as it would have been a valueable lesson from the "master". I'd like to think that I held my own as Caesar through the first four years and provided some tense moments for Grant (playing Pompey). It was probably somewhere in that fourth year however, that it seemed inevitable that Caesar would not be overthrowing Pompey this time around.

Grant helped clarify some rules and let me slide on a rule misque when Octavian "mysteriously" appeared in Greece. His good deed did not go unrewarded, as he ended up defeating Octavian in Byzantium and gaining the VP.

Check out the Columbia Games page on Facebook and perhaps you too will have an opportunity to face off against the face of Columbia Games.

I recently thrifted a copy of this game and was hoping to get it to the table. I enjoy sport simulation games and fortunately so does another member of my gaming group. Before the others arrived, the coin was tossed.

These two teams never actually played each other during the 1979 regular season. We simply picked our favourite teams. The Vikings had one of their worst records this season. And the Steelers went on to win the Superbowl. But as we say, "Any given game night....".

It was all Steelers in the 4th quarter. However the comeback fell short. Vikings were successful in eating up the clock. Steelers got the ball back on their own 16 with 1:20 to go. The passing game was not there when they needed it most. An incomplete pass for long yardage and a "hail mary" interception on the final play ended the Steelers comeback attempt this day.

We had a blast playing this. Many memorable "plays" throughout the game. We will definately be playing more of this one.
