Below is my Top 10 list of hockey games. These are games that meet all of the following criteria: (1) ice hockey games; (2) focusing on "simulation" of the sport (not too abstract or too dexterity based); and (3) fun to play. This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

As a side note, this is the second toughest Top 10 list I have done to date. There are just not a lot of hockey games (or at least not a lot of good ones) out there. I had to give a lot of leeway to criteria #2 and included some games that are very light (at best) on game simulation; but are quite good at simulating season/management/drafting/etc. (okay, Slapshot is a guilty pleasure; but must be on this list). Again, if you know of better games, then by all means join the discussion and, as always, thanks for reading and participating!

"I like this game. Penalties are resolved in a really good way. Players are accurately rated. Fun and has a good "hockey" feel and flow to it!"

"THE best hockey game, and one of the best Sports games, ever created.

Almost seamlessly incorporates forechecking, blocked shots, rebound clearing, penalty killing, shadowing, etc., all in a statistically valid and playable format.

Over the years, I've played hundreds of Face-Off games...from the first released season to the most recent 2009-2010 version.

I've taught others - who know nothing about hockey - how to play, and they loved it. Once past the initial complexity, it's a breeze to play.

If I had to pick just one sports game, this would be it!"

"If you are interested in seeing the puck's every move then this is the game. Beware if you are a quick play gamer, it does take a while to complete. On the order of 2.5 hours. After completing the game you do feel like you've actually watched a hockey game. And that to me is a positive.
Over the course of a period your team will experience the ups and downs of ice hockey. Speed in this game as in real life makes a big difference. So much so speed has the potential to win games for you. The more I play this game the more I like it. This would be 1 of the 3 games that I would have if I was stranded on an island somewhere if I could only have 3 games.

I've been enjoying the 1956-57 season. Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Rocket Richard, Beliveau... What a great set!"
