Below is my Top 10 list of soccer games. These are games that meet all of the following criteria: (1) soccer games; (2) focusing on simulation of the sport (not too abstract or dexterity based); and (3) fun to play. This is a list of the BEST! As always, your mileage may vary and some entries may be "controversial." As such, please feel free to comment, debate, or just express your own point of view. Feel free to thumbsup this list (to draw attention and more comments) or any pleasing, interesting or thought provoking entries. If I missed one that you feel is essential or I am "insane for not listing" (trust me, it has been said before), then by all means let the comments fly . . . just be civil. FYI - I am a sucker for comments and discussion and usually thumbsup most if not all of them.

I find that these lists sometimes are helpful for others seeking similar games and the more rich the discussion for more useful the list.

As a side note, I had gave some leeway to criteria #2 and included some games that are very light (at best) on game simulation; but are quite good at simulating tournaments/season/management/drafting/etc. and some games that are more dexterity than strategy (e.g., Subbuteo, etc.). As always, if you know of better games, then by all means join the discussion.

"This is probably the best board-game simulating a sport I've ever played, that is also still a good board game. It feels like you're playing some soccer. It takes skill to play, even though there is still luck involved. It plays quick, and it is fun! It's got 2" soccer meeples!"

"simply the best game ever made by humans, if you want to win to must mix, tactic, strategy, and be able to let you team do what do you want! more a sport itself than a simple game! of course for soccer fans only!"

--Raffaele Pascuzzi (Uriens)

More dexterity than I had hope to include on this list; however, this is recognized (by many) as one of the best Soccer games (including the highest ranking).

9. Board Game: Brettfußball [Average Rating:6.37 Overall Rank:12183]
Board Game: Brettfußball
"I really like this game, which is even fun to play solitaire. It has chess-like play and for me has a very Zen effect, combining a brain workout with a method of playing that is also relaxing. Check out the website of the designer, Walter Muller, who invented this game when he was 15. His "Tactics Manual" is an amazing distillation of nearly 30 years of his wisdom gleaned from playing his own game. I think it's brilliant. Extremely simple rules, but seemingly inexhaustible strategy. It's also the only soocer game I've played that makes me realize why players celebrate so when they score: It's darn hard work to get that ball into the net! In that sense this game perfectly captures the drama of soccer. Not all elements reflect the actual game, but ultimately the theme works, as, after all, you're keeping score of goals, and goals aren't easy to come by. Players roll one die and can only move horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally; can only force passes by rolling a number that allows them to move onto the exact square of the ball-handler. Also, the ball-handler must pass and cannot run with the ball, so forming patterns with which to move the ball--one die roll at a time--becomes paramount for success. I think it's a wonderful mixture of simplicity and strategy, and personally I just love this game. P.S.--Due to the nature of game play, I'd say the time to play this is either 60 or 90 minutes, not the listed 45. Granted, 90 minutes is a long time, but to me the game shines better in a longer format. Regarding game play, a player figure) must move the full total of squares in the chosen direction in accordance with the result of the die roll (i.e., 1-6 squares). So no, one can’t split up the moves. This is all part of the strategy. To fully understand the strategic possibilities, one should download from BoardGameGeek the Tactical Manual, an awesome 35-page document in which the designer demonstrates just how deep this game really is. Pros: Lots of strategy, good feel of the game, albeit slow-paced due to use of one die and the ability of the goalkeeper to stop a shot simply by being in line with the ball. Cons: Slow movement due to use of one-die. Because of this, there is probably no way to play this game satisfactorily in less than 90 minutes. But for people who don't mind a slower-paced game and like to sink into a games that's relatively simple to learn but tough to master, requiring thought throughout, this is a rewarding football (soccer) simulation.

A 7-year-old could understand the rules, but it probably takes an adult mind to appreciate the depth of strategy involved with this game. The strategy is so deep that even in 1974 this game was probably more than a person of average attention span would want to deal with. Now, in 2006, with the advent of computers and video games, time has gone a long way toward passing this game by. However, the fact remains that the game designer is brilliant in creating a simple-to-learn, difficult-to-master strategy/movement game with soccer as the theme."
