Hi
I must admit that I am an (Avalon Hill) Civilization fan, especially in the Advanced variant. It´s the only game I rated 10.
Since an average game takes 17 hours or so I don´t come to play it very often (say once in 2 years) and I`m looking for a worthy replacement, which has it all but doesn´t take that long. Till now I didn´t come across such a game, and I would like you to help me out.
A worty substitute should include:
1) Every player plays one (or more) cultures (or similar things) which have a name (like egyptians, gauls or whatever ) with which he can identify during play.
2) It should be about conquering or holding an area
3) It should have the possibility to advance your civilization by developing certain techniques which affect gameplay
4)Players should be encouraged to trade with each other instead of just making war

My entries on this list are the games I own but which don´t quite fit the criteria above (which does not mean that they are necessarily bad games)

Please convince me of better alternatives! (Or convince me of my own entries ....)

Vinci is often named as replacement, but it especially lacks specific nations with whom to identify, and advancements of nations

Oh, come on. This one is badly playtested and reminds me more of risk than of civilization. It´s a shame that it bears the same name as the king!

nice try, but somehow... I don´t know, it just didn´t get me. Perhaps because it doesn´t have calamities? It´s just not the same. The excitement is missing (for me, that is)

This doesn't exactly fit in all four categories - lack of trading being the downfall:

1) Each player plays one of the 18th century powers

2) VPs are scored by holding certian European territories as well as various 'new world' territories. VPs work on a sliding scale with X for the person with the most command markers on a territory, Y for the second most and (for large territories) Z for third place (X>Y>Z)

3) You can develop advances, but they're not typically cultural advances. More military and others that give you more money.

4) There is no trading as such... it is more 'coming to an understanding' about placements in territories.

This is a pretty quick game with very agonizing decision-making involved. As well, there is SIGNIFICANTLY less downtime (compared to Advanced Civilizations) and someone in last place will not feel like they're wasting several hours just to keep the game going. And even though the game seems like it is army driven, I can personally attest that a military strategy doesn't necessarily guarantee many VPs

I maintain that Tigris & Euphrate is as close as you're going to get to a playable 'civ lite' game. It meets all your criteria except trading, if you look at Monuments as advances.

So if you REALLY must have an all encompasing civilization game that can be played in a reasonable amount of time (~2 hrs) then you should play T&E and allow trading of the tiles in hand.
