I know there’s been at least one other thread about music to play whilst playing games, but to my knowledge there’s not been one about music to play whilst specifically wargaming, so here goes. This is mostly stuff that I’ve played whilst playing these games and I’m sure that others will think of other games and options, too. There are one or two games that I’ve never played in there as well.

I hope others will add their ideas to the list or comment on the games/music. It’s not an exhaustive list, but I’d had enough after doing the ones I did. The list originally include links to some of the music by way of real Player and a well known Internet Shop named after a large S.American River, but I’m not sure if that would count as advertising here, so I’ve left them out. You can easily search for them if you want anyway.

If you’re as interested in Music as much as I am, you might find this older List on "Musical Instruments" and Games interesting, too. The Link doesn't seem to work right now, but it's there if you search for it.

And what's the perfect Conquest game for Julian Cope's World Shut Your Mouth? I don't know, I've given it some thought, but maybe you can help...

Barra Barra – Rachid Taha. Boy does this guy rock. Quite frankly he’s got more oomph than anyone I’ve heard in a long, long time, and he’s brilliant live. Check him out, if you haven’t already. You may know another piece he does - a cover this time - a familiar ditty by Joe Strummer about Rocking El Casbah.

Anyway, though Rachid is an Algerian Barra Barra is African sounding and is full of pounding, unstoppable, exotic rhythms. Lots of gravitas and enough energy to wake the dead. I’m sure Hannibal would have appreciated it as he crossed the Alps. Works for me when I play this game, anyhow. Charge!

Tumbling Dice – The Rolling Stones. What can I say? We’ve all been under the influence haven’t we?
Those 6 sided monsters will certainly rock the world in this game, and I think The Stones in general are a good accompaniment to that. As for the game…well, it has it’s place if you’re in the right mood.

This Vangelis Soundtrack has to be in my top 10 film soundtracks. Immensely powerful and melodic. Try track 2. You can feel the unstoppable momentous surge of the Spanish after their “God, Gold and Glory,” but we all know which one they really wanted. A great piece of music, a good game and a good (if blood-thirsty) film to boot.

Hunting Tigers out in India? Bungalow Bill? Nah, good stuff, but it’s got to be Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. Just the thing to take out a few enemies with. Talk about a riff to rock the world.

Well, let’s face it, if the Germans had won this battle they most probably would have won the war and dominated a whole swathe of the world.…but that’s another argument and one I’ve debated at length elsewhere. Ok, we could have the film soundtrack of the same name here, but I prefer this epic of noisy confusion:

Hurricane Fighter Pilot by The Red Crayola

When playing the Russians on Cyberboard, I like to play a little bit of the sort of music you find on a Red Army Choir album. Just the thing to keep the spirits up as the Germans carve you up at the start and just the thing to smash them with at the end:

And for this rather frothy and fun game about the War in Space against an Alien Race, then something like this fits the bill nicely:

Well maybe Scheer and Jellicoe were the only men who “could have won or lost the war in an afternoon,” to paraphrase a famous quote. Try some music by the band British Sea Power…rocks very nicely. So does the game, which I think is the best of it’s type.

With all that death and rebirth going on Mozart’s Requiem seems perfectly apt here. Good game, though maybe a tad dry and certainly rather abstract in terms of its battles.

I will give 1 Geek Gold to the person that makes a thematic CD for me for 7 Ages.

I am thinking something like 110 tracks of perhaps 2 minutes each. It would have to include music native to the 110 civilizations in the game (or something close).

That way, I can select the track to coincide with the active empire. The CD would also work for Civilization, History of the World, and others.

The soundtrack to the 'Sharpe' television series. Hard to come by in the States, but this is a gem of a collection of music. There's plenty of Napoleonic-era English military brass music, but some outstanding performances as well. John Tams, who played Hagman in the series, is one of the best male folk singers in England -- he'd often sing on-screen, and Tams had been a singer long before the series. I love his work with the Albion Band; if anyone out there likes Fairport Convention, then you MUST check out 'Rise Up Like the Sun,' a classic British folk-rock record that has an incredible line-up. Current folk goddess Kate Rusby also sings on the soundtrack; her version of 'Broken-Hearted I Will Wander' brings tears to my eyes. But right from the opening cannon-shot of the CD, you know this is a perfect collection for any wargame of the Napoleonic era. Over the hills and far away!

I've been listening to a CD with music by the English composer Eric Coates lately. It's light classical music from the WW2-era, and at the time this music was frequently used in the news reels.

The music, allthough somewhat obscure, is very fitting with the theme of this game. How could you possibly go wrong with titles such as "Youth of Britain", "Rhodesia", "Salute the Soldier" and "Calling All Workers"?
