I don't watch reality TV shows, but from the advertisements I've seen, Big Brother sounds like a poorly designed board game: every round one player is eliminated by vote of the other players until only one player is left. What genius came up with this?

But it got me to thinking - if such a poorly designed game has such a large television following, what would happen if a better designed game were broadcast?

Every Big Brother commercial has people talking about "the Alliance" or the "Double Cross". Why not broadcast the game that started it all?

Every show is another year of game play - Spring Turn, Winter Turn, then build. Cameras follow players around eavesdropping on their conversations. Like Big Brother, the players would have to live in an enclosed area, but unlike Big Brother you wouldn't see a player eliminated every week.

I can see it now. THe MC solemny intones: "Time for negotations are over - hand in your orders." Then the slow reading of the players' moves with a big CGI map showing troop movements and conflicts with giant arrows. Then the post-turn analysis by two "experts".

I would totally watch that.

Or how about another progressive player elimination game? Every week one villager gets eaten, and the survivors lynch another. Big Brother format again, with eavesdropping on the players' increasingly frantic discussion as they form temporary alliances trying not to get eliminated by the werewolf or each other. Not even the viewing audience knows who the werewolf is - until the final elimination.

I would totally watch that.

What's the big deal about Texas Hold 'em? It's just another poker variant. Poker is supposed to be a high stakes game about bluffing and reading your opponents.

But if you really want a game about bluffing and reading your opponents, why not Cloud 9? This game where the stakes keep getting higher uses both cards and dice - a gambler's dream!

"Diamond Jim, are you in?"
"I'm in."
"Ace Scarborough, are you in?"
"No, I jump."
--pause for dramatic music--
"Sheila Blackdraw, are you in?"
"I'm in."
"We'll see if Howard 'Hindenburg' Orloff has the cards to keep the balloon aloft right after these commercial messages."

I would totally watch that.

For visual effect, it's hard to beat a miniatures game. I've picked Warhammer, but Warhammer 40,000 and Warmachine would work just as well. Multiple players would each get a different race, and a starting position on a strategic map. As the armies maneuver, every week a different tactical battle would be fought. Heavy martial music would blare in the background with emphasis on horns and drumbeats for every die roll.

I would totally watch that.

And for the sports fans, how about the game that gives an all new meaning to the phrase "Fantasy Football"?

Yu-gi-oh is a cartoon, so why not the original collectible card game? Multiple players in one-on-one duels - best two out of three with possible card substitution from the sidebar between games. Fans could cheer players who represent their favorite manna type, with the obligatory trash talk before each round:

"Your Elves and Craw Wurms don't stand a chance against the power of the Sengir. You're goin' down!"

I would totally watch that.

And for younger viewers, how about Hey, That's My Fish! ? A different starting set-up every week, with cute animated penguins collecting animated fish. Kids would eat it up. Game analysts dressed in polar bear costumes (yes I know, wrong pole) could keep up a running commentary.

"Well, Don, Betty has a decision to make. Does she gobble that juicy three fish tile, or move to block Mike? Oh, she took the fish, which may be a blunder!"
"Hey, that's my fish! (growl! ) But it's still anybody's game, Jim, as we're coming down to the last few tiles."

I would totally watch that.

Iron Game Designer Competition
(I believe this was actually done at one of the cons - wished I'd been there.)

Teams of game designers are each given an identical box of bits and a game mechanic is specified. By the end of the program they must design a board game that includes that game mechanic.

I would totally watch that.
