There are many many users here who have written reviews on bgg and some who have written many many reviews. Some write positive reviews and some negative. Some write short reviews and some in-depth. Some write pictorial reviews and some bullet points. Irregardless of what type of review each reviewer writes, one thing is true. They all had something that inspired them, that drove them to write their first review. This is a geeklist for sharing those reasons and inspirations.

Some questions to inspire discussion:

What inspired you to write your first review?

Had you been thinking about writing a review before that?

Do you still write reviews? If so, what drives you to keep writing them?

My First Review: Royal's Reviews #1 - Quarriors - Faults of an Otherwise Fun Game

What finally got me to write my first review was this game. There had been so many glowing reviews of it and after playing it a few times I had a vastly different opinion of the game. I wrote down a large number of my thoughts about the game when I got home from gaming and was surprised to see just how many things I had written. I figured if I had that many thoughts about the game I ought to put up a review to let people see a contrasting view about Quarriors. I didn't want to start off my reviews by making a purely negative review, so I settled on a style of talking about the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; which was an idea I had thought about using in the past. Even with all of that, it was still almost 2 weeks until I finally posted the review.

Had I thought about writing reviews prior to this? Yes. Many, many times. I just never committed the time to writing one. Now I'd like to continue to write reviews. While I won't be one to review all of the newest games (no budget to do that), I enjoyed writing that review and liked making that kind of contribution to this site.

I haven't any other reviews just yet, but I do have an intent to write some more.

My first review: Fire phasers and photons! A review of SFBM

I wanted to share my impressions of this 30+ year old game, and at the time (2007) there wasn't a large amount of content for SFBM, which seems to get overshadowed by Star Fleet Battles.

Since that time, I've been more interested in writing reviews for older games that maybe get missed by the geek public. I don't think I could add much to the numerous reviews of Memoir 44, for example, but I was excited to be only the second reviewer of the 1977 game Chitin I: My Bugs Can Eat Your Bugs For Lunch: A Review of Chitin I: The Harvest Wars. I was also the second reviewer for Elefant Hunt and King of the Tabletop. I maybe don't get as many thumbs, but I like to make my contribution in more obscure areas. And, it is great to hear from others devoted to these older games.

Once I hit my one-year anniversary of this site, I decided to do reviews of games that I have had for at least a year, so others users can see what I thought of my games long after the newness had worn off.

My First review: Tempus

Wow...it's been a few years! I had to think about why I wrote.

Temp us was played up in the expectations of many as the grail civilization (or at least civ-lite) game. There was a LOT of disappointment in what it was versus what people wanted it to be. I enjoyed the game and thought I'd mix a little creativity and imagination together in defense of what I thought was a reasonable and fun civ-lite game. It only gets played rarely but I still think my review holds. A little imagination makes any game better.

My first and only review to date: The Triumph of Theme. My inspiration for writing this was simply that I felt I had witnessed something profound while playing this game. This game has done theme integration on a level I have not known before. The package is solid, all around. While any number 1 ranked title can be contested, I do feel that this game is a rightful contender. In short, I would say that I write a review when the game compels me to feel either high level satisfaction or sinking nauseation. I would prefer the former.
