I come from Elfenland, a faraway place,
Where Caravans gets you cards,
Where they Guillotine heads,
If they don’t like your Race (for the Galaxy),
It’s Pandemic, but hey, it’s Carcassone!

When the wind’s down in Thebes,
And the sun’s over Chess,
And the Brass in Yspahan is right,
Come on down, Ticket to Ride,
Take a Cargo Noir and fly,
With Tales of the Arabian Nights!

1.) Of course, in order for Diamonds in the Rough to be found, they must first be put there! What single game would you most like to see mass-produced and sold with common carriers (i.e., a game you’d like to be common at stores, but you just never see)?

2.) Sometimes, you walk away from a game not really caring for it, but quite liking a particular mechanic. What mechanics would you most like to see lifted from such games and used in something better?

3.) Sometimes, you just have a Rough night of gaming. What Diamond are you most likely to bring out to help lighten your mood?

(Sorry, I'm not thrilled with these questions either. Hopefully my silly song parody will tide us over until next week!)

Captain's Log
Kingsburg: To Forge a Realm x 2
Ticket to Ride: Europe, with 1912 Expansion x 2
In the Year of the Dragon, with Great Wall of China Expansion x 1
7 Wonders x 3 (on BSW)

A fairly brutal game of In the Year of the Dragon (at least for my opponents). Even though the game started off incredibly mildly (we had two early Fireworks tiles), a couple players neglected to save up yuan to pay Tribute to the Emperor near the end of the game. Couple that with a breached Great Wall near the end (causing more death and destruction), and we had one particularly unhappy camper. But such are the ways of Dragons! We did not weep for the Farmers and Apothecaries as they were brutally shunted off into the cold, left to die.

I haven't played TtR: Europe in well over a year, so it was a very strange game. The very first play of the game practically declared war, as it caused much groaning. Then it got worse. Happily (at least for continued familial relations), though, Europe is "kinder" in the sense that one can always build a Train Station if blocked off from someplace in the board. It at least made for a lighter mood after the bloodletting from Dragons.

*= New to me. (AoI is new map to me.)

I've been thoroughly enjoying Battleship Galaxies this week. Reactions from people I've played have been rather mixed, but strangely only one of them had heard of heroscape before playing. It is very similar to heroscape, except the base set feels much more complete than heroscape's base set ever did.

Die Burgen von Burgund was enjoyable, but rather forgettable. I suspect my mind groups all euroish games into one category and just treats them as the same game. It's hard to keep Macao/The Speicherstadt/Vasco Da Gama/etc separate in my mind. I know they have very different rulesets and mechanics from each other, but the feeling of turn after turn just looking for the most points to grab & doing that makes them divorced from theme; this makes for forgettable play experiences.

But then again, maybe that's the joy of playing them in the first place. They offer non-brain burning challenges with a simple aesthetic which invites you to insert it into any context. That's kind of my attraction to Euro's in general, anyway.

Weekly Plays

The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game - 11 (7 solo)
Dominion - 7 (all isotropic)
7 Wonders - 2
Ghost Stories - 2 (both solo)
Race for the Galaxy - 1

Nothing exciting to report in the LotR solo plays... used the same three heroes (Eowyn/Theodred/Beravor) and only made minor tweaks to the deck. Tried the second scenario again just to reassure myself that my first win there wasn't a total fluke (another comfortable win), otherwise this was all Escape from Dol Guldur, all losses. I might try some other decks out solo, but more likely I'll switch to playing it with two decks.

The other four games were with Mary; we played the second scenario once (winning easily, though that was in large part due to an amazing start hand for me), then switched to the third scenario and won 1 out of 3. Even with a second player, it feels like this scenario is hugely dependent on what encounter cards are drawn for the objectives... if it's a bunch of treachery that has no effect at game start, you've got a chance; if it's all locations and tough enemies, it's hard to overcome that initial threat count without leaving yourself open to being overwhelmed by enemies.

(I am also happy to finally have the cards in decent sleeves. The cheap sleeves I had were useless.)

Taught 7 Wonders to two more of the Denton group, which went as well as the previous games except that Keith didn't want to line his cards up as they are designed (kept adding them vertically, so the names were covered up, and then tried to build the same card a couple times). Would have played some more 7 Wonders Wednesday, but I wasn't feeling well and didn't go over there.

After the loss at Thesp's, I needed to play some Ghost Stories... started with a Normal win against Death's Army, then moved up to a 2-incarnation game against the difficult combo of Hope Killer and Uncatchable... Yellow had two shots at Uncatchable needing one success from two dice (had the mantra, plus one Tao); if he failed the first time, everyone else had full boards and 1 Qi, so it would have gotten back around to him for one final shot. Fortunately for my score, I got the success the first time. On to three incarnations next...

Dominion: Cornucopia

And came up with a second more easily built board game idea... I'm gonna fiddle around with that for a bit.

New games:
Rattus
Nuns on the Run - Thank you to MeMe & family for these two
The Resistance
Get Bit! - on it's way
Agricola: Goodies expansion

And I'm working on a PnP Black Vienna. That game looks fun!

I'm glad to be off the game freeze

Nothing special to say on Cornucopia. I played against Jennifer, but she wasn't really up for a game at the moment, so we terminated the game early.

Rattus was fun, we got in two more plays against mostly newcomers. The first game I almost got all 20 guys on the board. I had four left when they finally started sabotaging me. I'm still tinkering with the witch trying to find a good strategy. I'm getting better. My second game I only had about 10 or 11 on the board (winner had 14!). All but one of my guys were in Spain, with only one rat token. My last guy was safe in England. I think next time I play, I'll try a strategy of populating a "safe" territory for myself with three rat tokens that won't hurt me or will only minimally hurt me (using the witch), and keep the plague man as far across the board as I can to make the rats sit as long as possible.

I also caught a few rules that didn't match how we were taught. I'd like to know if any of those were house rules/errata I'm unaware of.
- Choosing a role card is optional
- You can only use the king's ability to save a cube in a country with NO rat tokens.

Quo Vadis?*

Couple comments:

Tigris & Euphrates - I didn't like my first couple plays of this game. One of them was years ago, and the other was about two years ago. But it's really highly rated, I had it on a small list of games to play again to determine if I just didn't like them or if I was initially too harsh in my judgment. I just don't like this game. It's dry (despite being about two rivers), and doesn't reward long-term planning (just tactics, it seems). And it's one of those games that tends to go slow and strongly favors experienced players. I don't mind games with a learning curve, but this one is a rather steep. It's a mountain I'll probably not climb again.

Quo Vadis - Only game new to me this week. Mike was involved in this play. It's not a bad negotiation game. Unfortunately, the play was marred by two things. 1) The game fell into a fairly obvious kingmaker scenario towards the end. 2) The player who won. It's already someone I am reluctant to play with (he's slow and doesn't pick up rules or really even pay attention during the game - several times he made moves when it wasn't even his turn). But, although I will admit he played a strong tactical game, his negotiating skills were absolutely abysmal. I find it odd that someone who doesn't negotiate can win a negotiation game. I've never seen it happen in Bohnanza or Chinatown. Still, I am willing to chalk this up to an anomaly for now. So, the upshot is, willing to play again, but not eager to do so.

Railways of Europe

The game of Railways of Europe was quite enjoyable. It was a three player affair in which I managed to wrap the scoretrack. Much to my wife's annoyance, I upgraded a city to black right in the middle of her network. It cost her at least 8 points. I then emptied a city that she had been counting on of all its cubes. She was none too happy. At the time, she was close and getting closer. It kept her back and cemented the win.

No new games this week.
