I dig on geeklists that play with the names of games, so I decided to make one. Each numbered entry contains the respective number of words describing why I love board games (e.g. #4 has 4 words, "Inspires other creative efforts"). Having more fun with words, there is a quote for every entry.

Take a read on the list, comment, add to it!

Cheers!

Drama!

I will admit it, I love ameritrash games - a key component of which is drama. In my opinion, there is little better than building a story with your friends (or enemies) through a board game, sometimes culminating in a single die roll to determine the fates of our heroes.

"Back through the ages of barbarism and civilization, in all tongues, we find this instinctive pleasure in the imitative action that is the very essence of all drama." - George P. Baker

Thought-provoking

On more than one occasion, I have come away with moments of personal reflection after playing a board game. A recent one inspired by Mansions of Madness: First Edition: what is the difference between fear and insanity?

Attention to detail

Getting the little things right in a game can make all the difference. Be it in the artwork or the game mechanics, seeing details done right brings a smile to my face. I especially love a good game manual. (Unfortunely, the games I have been playing lately are lacking in this department - sigh, Fantasy Flight Games.)

Inspires other creative efforts

Since I started playing board games (and especially since joining the BGG community), I have found myself needing to scratch a creative itch more often (note: I would not consider myself an artist by any means). Whether it come from recently writing a more creative session report or just wanting to play more music, the creative juices start flowing after a great night of games.

Outside-of-the-box thinking

Problem solving / critical thinking is at the core of most of my favorite games. One of the more amazing things I have observed through various plays is that a strategic trend will emerge in a game group only to be turned upside down when a new player is introduced.

I find this especially evident in the game styles between men and women. With my usual gaming buddies, games seem to follow a bit of a formula. When one of our lady-friends plays with us, it's an inspiring back-and-forth as the usual play styles are often beaten to a pulp by that of the women.

Bringing out the geek in everyone

You are reading this on BoardGameGeek.com - you know what I am talking about! I contend that it is less about being a geek, and more about being a kid. Keeping your imagination alive and thriving cannot be a bad thing.

Nothing in life is above being honest

I am lucky that my usual gaming group is a good bunch of guys - old friends - that all agree: winning by cheating is no way to win. There is something great about that.

You get more entertainment value for your money

I compare all entertainment to movie prices: 2 hours = $10. That seems about right. So, a $50 game should yield about 10 hours of gaming to be worth it. The more you play a game (even some of the more expensive ones) the more bang you are getting for your buck. Think of the money you are saving!

Getting people to play together from around the world

In my current BSG PBF Game we have players with tags from the US, Estonia, Canada, and Ireland. How great is that?! Everyone speaks the language of board games.

"The chess-board is the world, the pieces are the phenomena of the universe, the rules of the game are what we call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us." - Thomas Henry Huxley

It is fun to move around little pieces representing people

Controlling small people is just plain fun. I imagine it to be one of the best reasons to become a parent.

Turns out not where but who you're with that really matters

This has become a driving philosophy of mine. As long as you are surrounded by good people, you will be happy. Board games bring the best (and sometimes worst - which can also be fun) out of people and, as stated earlier in the list, bring them together.
