As someone who enjoys game design, I like to create my own variants/expansions for games that I enjoy from time to time. They have ranged from tame to outrageous in terms of how they compare to the original game.

What are some of the more interesting variants that you have played or created? How did they work out?

Variant Title: Extreme Weather of Catan

The Premise: The island that the settlers chose to colonize happened to be very prone to extreme weather conditions and natural disasters. It plays the same as the original game, except when a "7" was rolled. There was no robber, instead rolling a "7" would trigger a natural disaster which involved rolling on a seperate table. They ranged from landslides and wildfires (not as bad) to hurricanes and tsunamis (really bad). Soldiers became "National Guard" and could assist with or prevent negative consequences that would have normally occured if you were hit by a natural disaster.

Reception: Extreme weather replaced the robber when rolled on a 7. It's more random (as there is no specific player targeting like there is with the robber) but I made this variant partially in response to few people in my group being not very fond of the robber. It seemed to work fairly well and we enjoyed a "new" way to play Catan for a while.

Collapsing skyscraper Roborally

The Idea: you put all, or maybe only ten or so devil, boards on a stack. you roll 2d10 for the position of flag 1. (ignore the outermost squares, if you drop the flag in a pit roll a d4 for final position)
as soon as the first robot touches the flag the floor collapses and everyone gets moved to the board underneath. following the rules for falling (from armed & dangerous) everyone takes one damage except for the robot who touched the flag as (s)he has a parachute (shaped like a flag). to offset this damage the robots that fall also get an option.
as soon as you get to the next floor randomly roll for the next flag position. the player who hasn't touched flag 1 yet still has to touch flag 1.
the player who touches the last flag on the bottom wins.

with me and my friends it's usually the whiskey that wins though

there's also the roborally cube variant that I found on the internet ages ago, so it's not mine.

you'd put six boards down as a folded out cube

___1
_2_3_4
___5
___6

all the boards' edges are conected as if it were the outside of a cube.
making the distances quite short.

edit: just somethings i thought up after pushing "save"

“The Barking Dead” -- Zombie Dogs vs. the National Guard at the 2011 AKC Championships

I decided to jump on the zombie bandwagon with this scenario for Richard Borg's flexible Memoir '44 system.

As the competition at the 2011 AKC Championships reached a climax a meteor crashed near Orlando. Large sections of the city were shrouded in clouds of cosmic dust. Dogs all over the area began howling. Things got weird. It started with the purebred animals at the show...
