When I first discovered Hugo's Amazing Tape (http://www.amazingtape.com), it seemed like a dream come true. It is a plastic wrap which uses friction to stick to itself, rather than adhesive. So you can use it on anything! Finally, a simple way to wrap cards or tokens without putting them into baggies.

It's not without competitors. Some people recommend bondage tape as an alternative lifestyle. I was very concerned about using something that hadn't been thoroughly tested on games though, especially since bondage tape typically cost less (so in my thinking, who knows how high of quality it is).

Honestly, it seemed too good to be true. But several years later, I'm still singing the praises of this wonderful tape.

But, after opening Summoner Wars yesterday, I also want others to know that the tape is not as amazing as claimed. It can damage your components in some cases.

Please post your own horror stories here so others can learn from our misfortune. Seeing as it's not a problem for hundreds of my games, I don't want to make it out like you shouldn't use Hugo's Amazing Tape anymore - just be careful!

I'd just purchased all of the expansions for Summoner Wars and went to mix cards together. Unfortunately, the Hugo's tape had irreversibly damaged a pair of cards on each of my starter decks.

What my printing experienced wife thinks is happening is a cheap final coating is put on the cards. It either isn't resilient or doesn't get 100% dry so when the high friction Hugo's tape gets ahold of it, the finish is damaged. The artwork is fine, it's actually the finish which is damaged. However, without a finish, the artwork could easily be removed from the card.

reports in this thread:

Pretty much exactly what the subject says... [WARNING: Do not use Hugo's Amazing Tape to hold these cards together!]

I got my new games on Wednesday (fast shipping!), and as I always do, I tore them open and arranged whatever needed arranging; in this case, I cut strips of Hugo's Amazing Tape to hold the cards together so they wouldn't bang around in the case.

A day later I opened them up to take a peek, and the tape (it's actually high friction vinyl) "fused" to the top and bottom cards on each stack, marring some of the art and leaving behind a sticky residue. I will attempt to clean it off at some point I'm sure but right now I just want to put it away for about a week and not think about it.

So be warned; don't do what I did, use a bag but don't use Hugo's Amazing Tape, I've got 4 slightly ruined/sticky Omen and Irondale cards.

He later adds:
Yeah, I literally use Hugo's on, well, pretty much every other game I own and have never once had a problem (and I like to use it to keep small boxes, like Zman's card games, closed). By all mean's everyone, use the stuff, it really IS amazing.

I think it's just how the cards are printed. On a sidenote, aside from this, I LOVE the quality of the cards, POD or not, really nice. I'm sure I'll simmer down and again not knocking the company, sort of just a heads up for anyone who does like me to save them some frustration.

I had a set of boards (locally printed) that I wrapped with Hugo's tape. After a while, I looked at them again, and when peeling off the tape, it took a good bit of the toner with them.

The tape is fine for other items (ie, plastic items/metal) that don't have anything to strip off, but I use plastic bags now to prevent more damage to my games.

Sleeves.... A gamers best friend. If cards are sleeved the Tape doesn't hurt cheaply printed cards.

BUT... I cannot recommend NOT using MAYDAY enough. The batches differ in sizes and they rip frequently. You get what you pay for.

Hi there,

i recently opened my copy of the 1968 version of acquire on game night, only to discover that the bondage tape i used to secure the shares during transport had bonded with the underside of the game board. When i tried to remove it, the print came off with it, leaving an ugly scar on the board.

This is the only instance i have fount fault with the use of Bondage Tape so far. I haven't experienced any damage to cards in any way, and i use it on almost every game with cards in it.

The 2007 edition came with the the order cards in tuck boxes, but the site cards loose. I had Hugo's around the site cards, and two of them are now seriously stained.

I tape up pretty much every pack of cards in my collection and I taped this one up as soon as I went through the components. Now there's a line across Frodo and Sam's faces where the Amazing Tape used to be.

Granted, I packed those cards pretty tightly. Because of the freakish size of the cards it's a little difficult to make tuck boxes (from letter sized paper) so the tape is still out there. Once I loosened the tape's unholy grip I haven't had any more blemishes.

Just opened my never-played copy to make sure it was ready for WBC -- I'm finally going to get to play it!

Unfortunately, I had wrapped the sleeved cards in Hugo's tape right after I bought it a few years ago. The cards were sitting next to the unpunched counters. The countersheet stuck to the tape, and could not be removed without destroying about half of the Prussian army. Many others have a glossy strip on them now where they had been touching the tape.

I gave up on Hugo's after using most of my first roll. It's a pain to get on and off (even if you mark the ends with a Sharpie), cards tend to "squirt" from the middle of any decks that are wrapped tightly enough to stay together, and it has a bad tendency to stretch the sleeves of the cards on the top and bottom, effectively marking them. Plus, cards in baggies can slide around a bit, making them easier to fit into tight boxes.

My advice: stay away from this stuff. You probably won't realize the damage has been done until your game is out of print and too expensive to replace. If you have game-storage money that's burning a hole in your pocket, spend it on some nice 4 mil baggies from Amazon.
