Sorry for the late posting. There was a loss in my wife's family yesterday, and I am working second this week. Because of my wife being gone most of the weekend, and me watching the 4 kids. I didn't get to play too much.

2011-08-26 - Had a friend over Friday night after work for a couple games.

Despite the craziness that was Hurricane Irene we managed to squeeze in 3 plays of Ascension with lots of promos and the Return of the Fallen expansion.

I was proud that during one game I managed to trim my deck to just 7 cards and then shortly after that I picked Adayu and Vedah and I still happily lost that game (and the other 2) to my wife

On a separate note I have been a way from this list for a while due to family and career but I am happy to be back.

Edit: I can't type somedays

A light weekend of gaming with my wife. Saturday, we played a single game of Jambo in which she snatched victory from my hands. On her very last turn, she drew the Dancer which allowed her to cash in one ware card for 12 points in spite of not having the right combination of goods. Combine that with another ware card where she did have the right combo, she scored 24 points without so much as spending one.

Sunday night, she and I played a quick game of Carcassonne. It was a quick and dirty game; lots of actual and attempted stealing of cities. In the end, I won by two points having completed a two-point city with my last tile. Though I had no Meeple to play on it, that city was scored by my farmer. Victory by a nose.

I didn't get any gaming in this weekend, as I had to drive to Waterloo, IA for a physical for a new job and left all my gaming buddies behind. I drove up the night before the following day I went to look at houses and apartments so that I can relocate out to the new job (and so I can bring the wife and kids) then had a 2 hour physical, afterwards my wife and I spent 10 hours in the van on the drive home.

A nice little game of Thunderstone with the Misses. She took it 78-75 in a very nice and close battle. She mainly went for Deep and Toryn, I went for Verdans and Diins, for the magic attack. A very nice game indeed.

Played on Saturday night.

Napoleon's Triumph- Finally got to play this one. It is a beautiful game to look at and play. Can't wait to play it again now that I understand the strategies a little more.
Leaping Lemmings- This one wasn't on my want to play list but I found it surprisingly fun to play. A good "beer" game.

Hurricane Irene came in so we broke out the family games and played some with the kids.

Once again we started with Sticheln, and the guy who campaigns for more screwage got his wish (ending on -19).

Next was a game of Chaos in the Old World: The Horned Rat Expansion that I would have preferred to have avoided - some rough handling resulted in a section of the board being snapped off! gulp

I must say no more in case the memory of the event drives me insane... In the end, as Khorne I rolled 8 hits of 6 dice on the last turn, and won as a result. Yes, focus on that.

To finish off the night we played two rounds of Shadow Hunters Expansion. I drew the Wight both times and managed to win.

Later in the week I got the chance to play some traditional Italian card games with some traditional Italians. They introduced me to the Italian 40 card deck, and we played Scopa and Briscola. The former seemed quite light and luck-dependent (and felt similar to Koi-Koi) until my opponent revealed some tactics and ways to card count. Briscola was more my style, a trick-taking game that was still fairly light due to the 3-card hands. I liked the game, but my opponents had more fun arguing with each other and criticising each others' plays. wow

Wow - what an uneventful weekend .

However, managed to get my first play of Space Hulk: Death Angel – The Card Game! This game is fairly interesting and I barely won with one last space marine left. Went for a long shot kill and managed to off the last brood lord.

Definitely fun - let's see if this guy has some legs...

Edit: Forgot to mention that I had to play this one solo. With a wedding this weekend we were too exhausted to have people over and well, my wife was really exhausted too...

We tried this on Saturday night. From my POV, a fairly ordinary "build the building, ship the cube" game. Not a bad game, but it really didn't have a lot to distinguish itself from the myriad of similar games.

We wrapped up the night by losing 2 games in a row of Defenders of the Realm, which puts our record at 0-5. We still haven't managed to kill more than one of the Bosses in a game. I usually don't like co-op games except for Arkham Horror, but since this is designed by the guy as AH, maybe that's why I like it.

Depending on how you define it, this was my first honest-to-goodness "war?" game. As expected, I did horribly. I suppose it didn't help that I was facing a huge block of "club" cities with a hand utterly devoid of them for the entire (introductory) game. The other players vocally wondered why I was doing what I did. If I figure it out, I might tell them.

This was preceded by two games of Quarriors! and followed by a typically crazy round of Galaxy Trucker. Just wonderful things to stuff a "war?" game in between, I think!

Once again, I played several solitaire games of Hornet Leader: Carrier Air Operations, finishing up a Marine Corps long campaign with a Great rating. I think the Marine Corps campaigns are a bit too easy, especially when playing 2011 and later campaigns, because you get too many SO points and the planes all have special abilities to protect them from getting hit much.

I also played a couple of games of Commands & Colors: Ancients with my partner, with me taking control of the Carthaginian army and her playing the Romans.

We also tried a new game, Matzakoman, that I won in a contest, but I'm sorry to say that it was a disappointment. Although the components were very nice, and there was the novelty of spinning a dreidel rather than rolling dice, the rules, and especially the plague cards need to be explained better. Even after we made decisions about how to interpret the rules, the gameplay seemed to drag on.

I had some friends over for gaming Friday night, and we had a grand old time.

While waiting for people to arrive, we played a 3-player game of 7 Wonders.

We moved on to a 5-player game Race for the Galaxy a little bit later, with my wife joining in this time. It was a learning game for one and only a second (I think?) game for another, so we played just the base game. I had forgotten how much the game changed with the expansions. I also understand now why you're not supposed to play the base game with 5 players. We must have gone through the deck 8 times by the end of the game.

Our big event of the night was a game of Arkham Horror with Arkham Horror: Dunwich Horror Expansion. I recently went on an Arkham expansion buying spree, and we had way more cards in the mythos deck than we probably should have. Apparently when you get too many small box mythos cards in there, you have a decent-or-better chance of only seeing a gate or two on your expansion board. Poor Dunwich had very little tourism in our game. We won with 6 elder signs on the board.

I just got this in a trade for Memoir 44's Pacific Theater exp a couple nights ago and it was a hit with the family.

My father-in-law and mother-in-law were at our house and I tried to get them to play a game of Kingsburg but the wife said it looked too hard.

I brought out Roll Through the Ages and my wife said, "Oh, is that the peg game? Psshhhh."

After I said it was like Yahtzee they were willing to try it.

A couple turns later and they were hooked and really enjoyed it. I let the mother-in-law win which is customary when I bring out new games even though I probably could have destroyed them all with my little pinky. I guess there's a certain satisfaction knowing you can crush someone but choose not to.

Had an awesome weekend of board gaming that began with my newly acquired copy of Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game. Was a little nervous about teaching a game I had barely played to a complete non-gamer sports-nut friend of mine but he was totally sold. Another friend arrived towards the end of our Die, Zombies, Die crusade and he was able to also pick it up pretty quickly, then he took the reigns of the zombies for the following games and we had a blast. The 2v1 is a pretty unique dynamic for us and one of the games came down to the last turn, last zombie getting killed.

My wife came home with dinner and afterwards we played some Ticket to Ride. I imagine this will begin to replace (although hopefully not completely) Carcassonne as our standard play-with-family-members game.

Finally my preggo wife went to bed, the first friend left, and the other friend and I stayed up late playing Small World, which we hadn't played in a month. Really fun game that we both enjoy, but the wife is not as big a fan and we can never seem to get more than three people at a time.

That was all just Saturday! On Sunday I had to catch up some chores but did manage to sneak in a game or two of Race for the Galaxy with the wife. She's still kind of learning the game and it does have a pretty steep learning curve compared to the rest of our collection. I play a ton of Keldon's AI so I probably need to pull my punches a bit and let her win a few games to get her hooked. whistle

Friday night started the weekend off with a bang as a couple of friends came over and we managed to get in a quick game of Quarriors! followed by a raucous 3-person session of Battlestar Galactica.

On Sunday, I was invited to a games night which I could not pass on even though I was tired from reffing soccer games all weekend. So I took my cookies and went over and was rewarded with two games of 7 wonders and one play through of Condottiere. I had not yet had the oppurtunity to play either game and I was especially delighted to finally get to play 7 wonders. Although I enjoyed Condottiere just as much even though I got my backside soundly beat.

We had friends over for board games on Saturday afternoon/evening. A shorter session than usual, so started with a couple of quick card games that were new to the group.

First up was Gloria Picktoria by Alan Moon. I've played it a few times at work, but it was new to everyone else. At work I am used to playing it with three players, here we played it with four. This made it seem like the Rooster Booster cards (which trigger scoring) came up really quickly, which in turn made the game seem a lot more tense, and like you had to play a lot more defensively. To be honest, I preferred it with three. I'm not sure that the group liked it a lot either (though I am sure they'd play it again too). That's fine though, it has been a big hit with the folks at work, so it'll get plenty of play there.

Next up was Nottingham, a slightly more obscure (AKA - Not terribly popular) Uwe Rosenberg game. Bohnanza is a big hit with this group, and we've had some success with Agricola, Loyang and Merkator. (Merkator went over surprisingly well, actually). Anyway, I was pretty confidant they'd dig this one, and I found a cheap copy, and it went down fantastically well. It was the hit of the night. Could be just that it's the right group, but yeah, we all had fun with it.

After dinner we planned to try out another new arrival to our collection, Alien Frontiers, followed by a game or two of 7 Wonders. There's a lot of hype around this Alien Frontiers, so we expected pretty big things. We read through the rules. It's a fairly straight forward game, but there are a lot of options each turn, especially after you pick up some of those tech cards. Well, even though we all enjoyed the game, it ended up running reeeally long. And then the ending is a little bit anti-climactic. We tend to like games where the scores are revealed at the end, but with this one it's a matter of ending the game at the right time. We liked it, and I know the next play will be much better.

Then on Sunday, I brought a tub of games to my parent's house. My little brother, who loves war games, but none of my other brothers are interested, was excited to play A Few Acres of Snow. It was a fun game, but he over-analyzed every move and it dragged out an hour longer than it should have.

And so I ended up only having time to play one game with the rest of the family. We played Ticket to Ride with the Alvin and Dexter expansion. Most of them had played Ticket to Ride before, but this was their first time with the expansion. They both loved it and found it very frustrating (especially as I constantly moved the monsters into their paths).

All in all, a great weekend.

Botched my first playing of this enough
that I know I need to look at the game
some more to get a real feel for it.

Also finished Trebbia and started Cannae
from SPQR.

Vids up as always.

Didn't have much time for games, as I spent most of the weekend either doing church-related activities or tending my farm.

But the one game I DID squeeze in is not only one of the highest-rated games on BGG, it was one I had not played previously, Puerto Rico.

The gamer meetup at Gateway Games & More near Eastgate Mall in Cincinnati included a chance to play this great game. Brian, Anne, Todd (the store owner), and I participated, with Todd and I both newbies to the game. Brian and Anne were gracious in explaining the rules and even basic strategy. In the end, newbie Todd ran away with it, cornering (whistle) the market on corn. I finished a respectable second, tied with Anne. Game explainer Brian suffered from some lousy timing, none of it his fault.

Liked the game a whole bunch. I'd give it 8/10. The "oh, by the way" rules were a bit more frequent and inscrutable than I typically like, but I think a couple plays would knock those out and allow me to explain the game to others should I buy it for my own use one day.

We usually try to get in some gaming on Friday or Saturday night, but this weekend we had plans so I really didn't expect to play at all.

Friday, however, a fellow resident in my class and I were able to get out of class early so we finished up a game of Le Havre that we had started earlier in the week. I had only played it once before (about 6 months ago) and that game was a 4-player game. This time there were only 2 of us so that game flow was quite different. And to be quite honest, I didn't remember much at all when we started. Somewhere in the middle of the game, however, I realized that I should just work towards building certain buildings that I remembered were somewhat important. I was able to snag quite a few of the big ones, and then I controlled the wharf until the end-game. I don't think I necessarily played well, but between my building purchases, my wharf control, and a few bad but costly moves by my opponent (who also hadn't played in awhile) I was able to pull off a relatively convincing victory.

After finishing Le Havre, we had a little bit more time so we brought out Macao which my friend had only recently introduced to me. It was our 2nd game, and I really felt like I made some lucky choices in our first game (which I won) so I was nervous about employing a similar strategy. Of course, it didn't matter because each game apparently plays out quite differently. It was a close game, but in the end I was able to sneak away with a 1pt victory. I really enjoy this game despite the lack of a strong theme.

Stefan Feld has been an increasing presence in our game nights (ItYotD, Notre Dame, Macao, and Luna are all new purchases either by myself or my main gaming partner in the last 6 months). So Sunday night, my girlfriend and I pulled out Luna. We wanted to play something new, so it was either Luna, Carson City, or Magnum Sal. She liked the artwork on Luna the most so we selected that one.

Luna had been on my radar for quite awhile but some of the reviews made me a bit hesitant to purchase it because I was worried it may be very difficult to teach. I just recently acquired it (and Fresco) in a math trade which took less of an investment. Regardless, it wasn't nearly that difficult to teach. I was actually surprised at how easily it played. There are a lot of choices, but they make sense in general. I do, however, have to admit that we forgot one MAJOR rule (that promotion to tiles must occur from the corresponding isle instead of just any isle). But, we still quite enjoyed it and I think omitting that rule may be a good way to teach players in the future. As the game went on, we both felt like I was in the lead (although I didn't really bring it up), but when it came to actually tally the score, I was only ahead 93-92. And, she was ahead on the tie breaker so she would have won with one more point. I had again pulled off a 1 point victory!

...(skip to Monday afternoon)...

Oh wait. One of the rules is different in a 2-player game. Stealing a Book of Wisdom grants a player 2 points instead of just 1? And she did that once versus me not having done it?....+1 point to her!

Damnit....lost by the tie breaker.

We're really enjoying Feld's games. I'm itching to buy Macao, and I'm happy to get some future play out of Luna. Overall, a surprising but rewarding gaming weekend!

With our summer hiatus finally over, it was time to return to the strange world ruled by polyhedrons...

After an intense six-hour session battling endless hordes of shuffling skeletons, giant ethereal skulls of pure hatred, and undead spellcasting elves, the group had managed to drive back the forces of necromantic mischief from the upper dungeons beneath the town of Road's End. The only casualties for the Forces of Neutrality were the new hirelings, a reformed barbarian and a geriatric farmer... both of whom will probably turn up to demand some recompense from beyond the grave later on.

The local halflings' social club rewarded the group with a house – located between a fortune teller's boudoir and the hut of Thunderpants the village idiot – giving them extra incentive to stay put and dig deeper. Mysteries abound in the area, and the players all seem keen to investigate.
