One of my favorite games is Junta...I like how everyone has to play cooporatively, but it isn't a group win. There is no one one person can even come close to winning if they try and stand alone..but yet it isn't an alliance per say becasue there is no way for an allied victory. So the game REQUIRES you to play togther, but only ONE person can win!

So, my question is:

What other games are like this??

A few notes:

1) I really can't stand a lot of the "euro" style games where everyone has to be nice and such. For example, I HATE el Grande

2) It Doesn't have to be about war, but it helps..a lot

3) It has to at least look interesting, I mean I've never played a game called "Who's the Boss" but it just looks so dumb...

I don't know if this is what you meant by "Who's the Boss".

I do think, however, that it takes everything fun about Junta and leaves behind the tedium and the four hour play time. Nasty game.

This is the first thing that came to mind when I saw the entry. CE certainly fits the bill... It's incredibly difficult, if not nigh impossible, to win without relying on others at some point. The key is knowing exactly when to backstab the others...

Turn on them too soon, and earn their wrath when they're still in a position to make your life miserable. Turn on them too late, and you risk them stabbing you first!

Maybe too high on the eurometer, but a game where you progress only if other players agree should fit the bill...
All that and and a heavy-negociation game with strict rules and a playing time of 45 min...

Well, this time I've crossed the border.
Carcassonne doesn't require explicitely to collaborate to win, yet the winner is typically a player who builds with other players in the broadest way possible.

The players need each other to stand against the Dark Legion player, but their victory points are tracked separately resulting in one winner (which could even be the Dark Legion, although he track his victory points in a different fashion). There is also a certain amount of screwing over the other teams through the use of special cards (which can also be used against the Dark Legion) and fighting over the better pieces of equipment.

There is a whole class of card games that meets these standards. It is not a "weenie euro", but it is an abstract card game. To use Mu as an example, it is often 2 vs. 3 in a five player game. Sometimes if your partner for that round is threatening to win, you have to tank the game so they don't individually win, thereby helping the other three players.

This game sounded like it met the criteria. Cooperative play but only one winner. The twist is that you are sometimes competing and sometimes cooperating with the other players.

From the description here on BGG:
A trivia game in which players form two teams, but players scores are tracked individually -- because the players are able to switch teams throughout the game.

This is not a great game, but it does fit the description if you have a lot of players.

At the end of the game, eligible characters go to Ragnorok. Either the good guys or the bad guys win. The winner of the game is the survivor who has the most victory points.

So, during the game players from the same side often want to take away possessions, followers and the like, but you have to be careful of killing an ally going to the final battle. (The good guys are stronger usually so there can be a lot of infighting).

It is a very neat mechanic -- its a shame the game doesn't basically work for the rest of the time.

Like Diplomacy, you must work with a least a few players in order to win, so everyone must cooperate in some form of alliance. But eventually, only one can come out on top.

Friedrich might fit the bill. The Austrian, French and Russian players are each trying to gain an individual victory against Prussia. Prussia wins by being the last player "standing". If any of the three just plow head long into Friedrich they will lose. It's a kind of dance to see who can get the other player(s) to sap Prussian strength first and still be in time to march to victory.

I don't have this yet, but it's in the mail via a recent Ultimate Trade.

I've read over the rules a few times, and it seems to fin in perfectly with what you're looking for in these games. Players have to form alliances from round to round, shifting alliances throughout the game. As your alliances win, you earn individual points. There's only one winner: the person who earned the most individual points.

If you can look past the artwork, there is a vicious game in here. You can either use your cards to gain points, or to eliminate "crisis" that arise. Either everybody loses because there are too many crisis, or the one person who hoarded enough of his cards wins.

Thus... Selfish play kills everybody, while selfless play ensures a loss for you. You must encourage others to do your dirty work, while not appearing to be TOO selfish.

Like Trivial Pursuit, except it ENDS.
The players are divided into two teams, wach with one leader (which changes through the game as people challenge them). Teams answer questions together, but only the leader wins.

Illuminati was, IMO, one of the first and best of this genre of games. You cannot win on your own. You must appear relatively harmless, and yet, if you are too weak, you can end up watching your 'friends' finish the game. You also have to be mean at times, but you have to convince everybody that you are just trying to keep things balanced so noboby else will run away with the game. And, if you don't win, you still can't help but enjoy the groups on the cards!
