My kids went back to school recently. (It's been a while, but I'm always a little late on the kids stuff. I figure most of us have been to school. Some may be in school and some may have kids in school.

School, in other words, unites us all.

One of the things I like about games is that it makes me think, and I occasionally learn stuff. Whether I'm learning where all these European cities are located or finding out about Flower Sales in the middle ages, I like learning trivia, and nothing's more trivial than games.

Roll Call:

So who's left in the Meatballs? I want to update the roster in the header.
If you're still a Meatball, comment below. Are you currently affected by school? Did you like school or am I bringing up bad memories?

History

Surely every Gamer has a good grasp of the Middle Ages thanks to the abundance of Trading in the Mediterranean games. Sometimes I love the bits of history I pick up playing a game, but sometimes it just seems to get in the way.

What makes a good Historical Game? What makes a Bad One? What are your Favorite/Least Favorite Historical Games.

Math (Maths for you Brits)

Nothing says AP like a good Mathy Game (Mathsy for you Brits). Sometimes Math can be fun and sometimes it can turn a perfectly good game into work.

What makes a good Mathy Game? What makes a Bad One? What are your Favorite/Least Favorite Mathy Games.

Some games help you brush up on your language, or another language. Sometimes these games seem like work to me, sometimes they seem fun.

What makes a Good Language game? What makes a Bad One? Do you have any favorites or unfavorites?

Reading

Thanks to the international character of Gaming, most games use symbols instead of words. Sure there are games like Dominion, Agricola and Arabian Nights, but reading is fast becoming a thing of the past in boardgaming.

What do you think of the Game Industries use of Symbols instead of Words? Would you prefer to have more language dependence in games, or less.

Science

There aren't really as many science games as I would expect. There are a few games with scientific themes, but I can't think of many where the science is really involved. (Leonardo Davinci has a science theme, but it's just a Worker Placement game.) Maybe that's because science is no fun. Maybe I'm just unaware of the fun science games.

What are your Favorite/Least Favorite Sciency games? Why do you think we don't have more Sciency Games.

Another relatively slow week for me.

_.7_. Gulo Gulo - With Azalea. She won with a dexterous touch.

I7.5I Round-Up - With Ivory and Dane. We saved all five horses.

_.5_. Kitty Bitty - With Ivory and Dane. Dane coasted to victory.

I7.5I Ingenious - With Marie. I locked her out of green at just the right time and won.

_.7_. Saboteur - With five coworkers, using Saboteur 2 (expansion-only editions). We only finished two rounds with two of us tied for first. I do like the variation in teams, but the second round finished with two blue, two green and one saboteur. The saboteur had no chance, but we ALL found gold so we didn't get as much of it. I think I like Saboteur 2 better (there are some definite improvements), I'm just not convinced it's a lot better yet.

I8.5I Troyes - With three other gamers. I finished second, but went too hard at the cathedral with cubes being removed there and no bonus for the cathedral.

_.7_. Hansa Teutonica - With two other gamers. I see the cleverness of the design and appreciate everything that is going on, but I just can't seem to get it. Oftentimes, that makes me excited to play the game more. Here, it doesn't.

_.7_. Sorry! Sliders - With Ivory, Azalea and Dane. I squeaked it out against Ivory and Azalea.

_.8_. Stone Age - With my younger brother. This was a really close game and a fun one too. He won by about 12 points with maxed out tools and most of the tool bonuses.

After an all out gaming weekend last week, this week has had no gaming at all. I tried Famiglia out solo, just to get a hang of the rules, and I think the game has promise. We still prefer the cube pushers, me and the mrs., but I can see how this will get played when time is short.

Completely unrelated, but did anyone notice this new game from Games Workshop?

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?...

I want it bad, but it's expensive and the models come unassembled and unpainted, so I doubt I will get it, but I just want it anyway. Gorgeous! Check out the mechanic squid!!

Back into regular gaming after my excellent holiday.

Monday: pub quiz (we won) followed by a round of Perudo.

Tuesday: LoB, with my new games in tow.

Vegas Showdown was as good as I remembered though it went as many rounds as it possibly can and did drag a little towards the end.

Ca$h 'n Gun$ for the first time in a couple of years. It's still OK.

Basari for the first time, having played its descendant Edel, Stein & Reich once. Liked it a lot. It's simpler and purer than E, S & R, without the special action cards. We played the variant that the die-roll at the beginning of each turn is common rather than individual.

Chronicle for the first time. Seems like a great trick-taker with a twist, though I screwed up the rules and we had one horrendously slow player. Must try again soon.

Friday: Matt came over for our regular dinner and 2-3p game session.

My Ra winning streak came to a sorry end, trailing in last. Weird situation right at the end when we ended up 29-26-26 on sun tiles, meaning Sarah and I lost 10 points on Matt. I was last in the round and put in the 10, hoping (and failing) to get it back with the 7 before the round ended. If I'd just put the 7 in, it would have been 29-29-26 instead.

Two games of A Few Acres of Snow, my 6th and 7th. So good! I was French in both games. The first one I laid a stalling siege on Pemaquid (which I lost), giving me time to fortify Port Royal and Louisbourg. Then it was a settling race, which I very narrowly won. If Matt had been holding the right cards on his final turn he could have overtaken me. Second game Matt went straight for Port Royal (which he won) and I fortified Louisbourg. Then I tried a raiding strategy, but it didn't work at all. He was almost always able to block me, and settled huge numbers of points for an easy win.

Saturday: at the pub and then friends' house.

Perudo x 3 - fun as ever.
6 Nimmt - likewise.
Ticket to Ride on the original board (with 1910 tickets). Thought I'd done OK, but nowhere near as good as Sarah who beat me on track-points, route cards and got the globetrotter bonus.
Piece o' Cake - sucked hard at this too, getting into far too many fights.

I was planing two visits to London on Board last week, but the pub we meet in had a different idea cancelling the Wednesday session at fairly short notice. Martin did manage to arrange an emergency Monday session but I did not get to that.

It was bad timing as my friend

was visiting from Malmo in Sweden and was planning to come to both evenings.

Anyway I met Mats and his friend Nigel (an Englishman who livs in Sweden. Hmm, reminds me of someone ) In the last year or so I had converted Mats to the Cult of the Wallace, so we started the evening with Discworld: Ankh-Morpork. It's Mr Wallace's lightest non-kids game. But despite it's rules simplicity, there is still quite a lot going on. We enjoyed it so much we played it twice.

We stayed with Martin Wallace and then played a game of London (first edition). Now as well as the aptness of Mats playing London in London, he also was keen to play it as all his plays had been two player with Nigel. He said he did enjoy it with three and it did play a little differently, not enough to put him off his stride as he won comfortably.

As we now had no LoB on Wednesday I invited Mats and Nigel over too my place on Wednesday. I met them after work and they came home with me. I got home to find my wife had cooked spaghetti for us all. My wife also does very large portions, which were greeted with comments about not being able to finish it. However as well as large portions my wife also makes very good spaghetti as no one left any.

We finally got away from Martin Wallace games starting the evening with Quarriors!. In fact we ended up playing three games in a row and I managed to win a couple of them. We all agreed it was a fun game and Mats was clearly tempted to get himself a copy.
