This summer I was moderator of the 2011 Solitaire Print and Play Contest. 32 games were entered in the contest and I've set a goal to review each of them that have a BGG game entry. (Only games that are entered into the database will be reviewed.)

This geeklist will provide a link to the review and a very brief summary. Due to my work and school schedule, the reviews will appear somewhat sporadically so if you're interested, I'd recommend subscribing to this geeklist to see updates as they occur.

I'd like to thank the designers again for making the games and entering them in the contest. They have provided me with hours of fun and I hope this geeklist will lead more people to discover your creations.

Finally, I did not design or playtest any of the games on this list. I was only the moderator of the contest. I enjoyed playing the games and getting to know the designers, however, I want to assure you that I will not let this affect my reviews. I will be honest and discuss the good as well as the bad in each of the games. I don't want anyone to feel like my connection to the contest will result in me shilling games that I don't actually like. That being said, I honestly did like the majority of games so don't be surprised to see several positive reviews.

Review Link: Fighting Aliens Should not be Boring - A Review of Space Gunman
Theme: Despite a cool back story, The game has several thematic problems.
Game assembly: Moderate. The game contains front and back tiles.
Components: There are two versions, a very basic black and white edition and a redesigned edition by Martin Muller with terrific graphics.
Ink Use: Light or Moderate, depending on version.
Final Verdict: Not enough variety in game and combat is overly simplistic.

Review Link: Find the Queens with a Little Patience - A Review of Queens of Fate
Theme: The story with this game is cool but non-essential. At its heart, this is a Patience style game.
Game assembly: Easy. Just a deck of 78 cards. Or you can buy a Tarot deck and have no assembly at all.
Components: The rule book is excellently written.
Ink Use: Light to Very Heavy, depending on which Tarot deck you decide to print. (Most are Very Heavy.)
Final Verdict: This is a little too luck based but the mechanics are interesting and I had fun overall.

Theme: Excellent. Everything in the game just clicks and fits well with the theme.
Game assembly: Moderately Difficult.
Components: Excellent
Ink Use: Heavy
Comments: It’s a very unique combination of mystery game and puzzle. It’s fun, challenging, and has great replay value.

Review Link: Gaming the Afterlife - A Review of Enki-Des: The Soul Gates
Theme: Well-written but could use some work to tie it in more with the gameplay.
Game assembly: None
Components: Playable but not very exciting
Ink Use: Very Light
Comments: A fast (10 minutes or less) RPG style game, but feels unfinished. I think there's a good game here but it needs more development work to really shine. It's fun for a few plays but won't hold your attention much longer than that.

Review Link: Achieving Balance - A Review of Shadows Upon Lassadar
Theme: Extraordinary! The fantasy world of Lassadar is brought to life through the mechanics, detailed images, and card text.
Game assembly: Easy to Medium depending on how you decide to build the game.
Components: Excellent. The woodcut illustrations are incredible and the components are all very readable and clear. The rulebook could use some minor updates but overall presents the game very clearly.
Ink Use: Heavy
Comments: The game has some minor problems with repetitive battles but otherwise is an excellent example of good solitaire design. Each decision carries a pro and a con and you must carefully balance the many elements of the game to avoid defeat.

Review Link: Nostalgic Fun - a Review of 8-Bit Invaders
Theme: Very good. The game does a terrific job of replicating Space Invaders.
Game assembly: Easy. The game is just a deck of cards and single sheet player board.
Components: They are OK. It's a little hard to tell some of the cards from the original artwork version apart which is an important part of gameplay.
Ink Use: Very light.
Comments: This game is more strategic than it first appears. It's filled with a some hard decisions and is lots of fun. The rules are a little bit fiddly and the game may not have long-term replay value but overall the game is fun enough to still highly recommend.
