I'm going to move outside my area of expertise a little with this list. One of my minor interests has been chess and chess variants. I'm not single-minded enough to become a good chess player, although I do like the casual game. I've fiddled around with the occasional chess variant, although not as much as I'd like. I get the impression that most people who like chess don't care for variants. Maybe it's because the variants mess up the beauty of the game, in their view, or maybe it's because the variant can render all that study they've put into chess worthless. (I think I'd have a chance of beating a chess master IF we played Knightmare chess, whereas I'd stand zero chance otherwise). On the other hand, it seems most people who don't particularly care for chess find the variants too much like chess to appeal to them. So chess variants seem doomed to be very much a niche. Still, I think they're interesting. I'd like to hear from the chess-lovers and chess-haters about chess variants. Add more and tell me about them. And I'd like to hear from anyone who has played them. What do YOU think?

For reference, here's the base game. No luck. Deep strategy. Widely considered (outside BGG) to be the premier boardgame in the world, with professional players, school and neighborhood clubs, thousands of books, magazines, national and international organizations, daily newspaper puzzles, etc.

Not a variant, but an alternative line of develoment when the original Shatranj moved east. While it doesn't hold the same status in Chinese culture as Western chess does, it does seem to be pretty popular. Are there Chinese chess variants?

The Japanese elaboration of chess created a very different game. I wonder if there are any variants.

Brings card play and luck into the game. There are several different ways to use the cards. Some would seem to leave the game mostly chess-like, with occasional card play throwing wrenches into the works. Other suggestions essentially turn it into a chaotic card game, with the chesspieces reduced to opportunistic moves.

A rather unsuccessful attempt to graft a theme onto a chess variant. Strictly speaking, it's not even a real chess variant, because it doesn't have a piece with the knight move, which is considered the unique, signature aspect of chess.

It's really too bad this appeared to such a negative reaction in Command Magazine (when there was no "real" wargame in the issue) as there are quite a few interesting ideas, especially in the subsequent modules. New pieces, more spaces, even a pre-war Russian "Military Chess"-style variant, although much better thought out than Military Chess (above).

With the wrong opponent it takes twice as long as Chess. But, at least you get to move all of your men each turn (don't you? It's been a while...)

This may be called a variant to Shogi.

Your 'pawns' collect crystals as they move and capture pieces. Crystals are used to upgrade your 'battle' pieces giving them better movement range or special abilities. The battle pieces are collectable, but not insanely difficult to obtain (as opposed to most CCG's).

The game is cool and good looking.

It sure feels like chess, or rather, chaotic chess. With all of the different pieces, special abilities, and movement patterns, It is difficult to keep track of every threat, unlike in chess where you know the pieces at glance.

I do not like chess very much, and labeling something 'chaotic chess' would usually keep me far away; but for some reason, I like this game.

Here's an interesting variant where you play with a smaller board. Start with only 4 pieces and then add additional pieces randomly as space becomes available. It can also be played with upto four players

Shahmot is a good example of a broken four-player chess variant. This is due, not in small part, to each player having a pair of queens on adjacent files that tend to align with an opponent's king.

I LOVE chess variants. I would recommend a couple of web sites to you:

Chess Variant Pages at http://www.chessvariants.com/
Richard's PBeM Server at http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/
Omega Chess Page at http://www.omegachess.com

One of my favorite variants is Omega Chess. The two "new" pieces that are added (the Wizard and the Champion) add just the right amount of flair to the game so that your "orthodox" chess skills are not rendered completely obsolete with the benefit that you are NOT playing the same book openings over and over again.

Bughouse chess is the best four-player variant in my opinion. It's very much a team game and includes a variety of tactical surprises not found in standard chess. Plus, it doesn't require any extra equipment other than a couple of chess sets and clocks.

It's the game with Spock on the box! Seriously, though, this is, IMHO, an excellent chess variant with the option to either move a piece or change the facing of its prongs and thus its direction of movement. Lots of jockeying for position and thinking ahead, usually followed by an ample burst of bloodletting. Four-player version is also quite enjoyable.

Tile Chess is an interesting multi-player chess variant with a sort of virtual board. It's certainly worth trying, although with three players it has a strong kingmaker problem.

I will throw my game into the ring. It’s chess but on a smaller board with new set up rules. The major change is a player may move any of his pieces in any normal chess fashion. This means you can move pawns like knights and rooks like bishops. You can do this because the identity of your pieces is hidden from your opponent. But you don’t want to get caught cheating because there is a penalty, nor do you want to be needlessly accusing.

Most like it some hate it. Either way it’s only 5 dollars.
