The 'list' is a work in progress -- it is my goal that every single game that is freely available on the internet will be listed here. A lofty goal, to be sure, but a noble one....

Since there are literally hundreds of free games available on the internet, I've decided to break the list into alphabetical chunks.

The format I'm using is pretty simple -- name, designer, publisher, status (free, shareware, demo, etc.), a short summary, and the website where it is available.

All summaries are either taken directly from the designer's/publisher's website, from the rules, or from the BGG entry. Any references to 'me' or 'I' refer to the designer, not yours truly...

Feel free to add to the list, but please only add games that have been released to the public by their designer or publisher -- don't add games that could be made for free using details and rules found on the internet but are actually commercially-published games. Also, please don't add public domain games such as chess, backgammon, poker, etc -- this would make the list unwieldy, to say the least.

Also, if you have played any of these games, please leave your comments.

A version of this list is also available at:

It is a millisecond second after the Big Bang. Now is your chance to guide the creation of particles, fundamental forces, and the physical laws of the rapidly expanding universe and use them to your advantage. Through judicious planning and aggressive maneuvering, you will be able to guide the creation of stars, solar systems, and even galaxies.

God Plays Dice is a micro-style game of managing and manipulating probabilities. By collecting and rolling dice you can gain control of cards that have special powers that allow you to better collect and roll dice, and to score victory points. Sometimes you will be at the mercy of the dice, but sometimes the other players will be at the mercy of you.

Print & Play

On September 20, 1835, began the longest and bloodiest revolution in Brazil's history. In the province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul, was proclaimed a Riograndense Republic. For nearly 10 years, troops loyal to the Empire of Brazil fought epic battles against the troops of the new Republic!

"Farrapos" is a board game for 2 players created by Julio Trois, which has the theme the Farroupilha Revolution. During 11 rounds each army will win the largest number of cities, adding up the maximum points possible.

"Farrapos" is a tactical game, where military strategy is very important. Each player must organize his troops, composed of tiles of infantry, cavalry and artillery. The clashes follow the style of the best wargames using dices and tables, for the resolution of battles.

Each player is running their own vineyard. You are attempting to grow grapes and sell them to increase your wealth and also undertake research to improve your knowledge so that you are able to grow each grape crop more efficiently.

The game is card based and during each turn you typically play a card from your hand and then draw another card from the draw pile.

The game goes over a number of rounds. Each round is ended when one of the players undertakes a grape harvest. The person who harvests is able to gain wealth while their opponent has the potential to improve their knowledge.

The winner is the first person to either 12 points of wealth (with at least 4 points of knowledge) or 6 points of knowledge (with at least 5 points of wealth).

ps. While this game technically starts with the letter "T" I have listed it as starting with "H".

Euronimoes is a euro-style print-and-play game for 2-6 players requiring only the rules (which include a playing mat), one or more sets of dominoes, and a handful of poker chips.

How does it differ from your ordinary, garden-variety game of dominoes? Players of Euronimoes are trying to play their dominoes in their own personal area in such a way as to minimize their point count at the end of the game.

The pips in any column must form one or more sequential runs – at the end of the game, the value of a run is equal to its smallest number. A run of 6-5-4-3, for example, is worth 3; a run of 4-3-2-1-0 is worth 0. And again, players don’t want points.

There’s a bit more to it than that, of course, since players also have to buy the dominoes they play, but that’s it in a nutshell.

It’s a simple game, but there’s a lot going on. Players of Euronimoes will quickly find that it takes plenty of planning, quite a lot of strategy, and at least a little luck to come out on top.

Glpyh is a card game system- the deck of 98 cards can be whittled down to a standard 52-card deck to play all the classics, but it contains 6 full standard suits, story suits for storytelling games (with images), 3 colored suits, and 6 minor elemental suits that can double or even triple up on cards. It can play tons of games.

This tactical game for 2-4 players is very easy to craft.

An experienced PnP'er should be able to do this in less than an hour.

A hybrid of Checkers and Go, for two players. The "Guerrilla" player, using small Go stones, plays on the intersection points of the checkerboard squares to surround and capture the enemy pieces. Meanwhile, the "Counterinsurgent" player, using checkers, moves on the checkerboard squares to jump and capture the enemy.

Equipment required: checkerboard, six checkers, and 66 small flat pieces (buttons, glass beads, small Go stones, etc.)

Rules available at BGG entry or at http://www.islandnet.com/~ltmurnau/text/gamescen.htm (scroll down a bit).

Evil Stevie's Pirate Game
Designer: Steve Jackson
Free (though Steve Jackson calls it shareware.... see below)

From the Evil Stevie website:

This is a game, involving elements of both roleplaying and tactical combat, in which grown men and women sit on the floor and push toy pirate ships around, going 'Arrrr!'

Unlike most of my work, this game is published privately (that is, not through Steve Jackson Games or any other professional publisher). I hope you have as much fun with it as I did. If you REALLY have a good time, don't send money . . . well, you can if you INSIST, but the appropriate offering would be some toys to help me build up MY fleet. I run this game several times a year at conventions . . . I can always use more pirates, more cannon, more ships . . . I've got a whole wish list. But opening an envelope and getting ONE PIRATE as a thank-you would make my day. Surprise me!

Game Time: 15-30 minutes
Genre: Non-collectible card game
Theme: Wild West
Components: 54 cards, 6 paper clips

Gunfighter is a light (15-30 minute) non-collectible card game for two players that features high stakes dueling through simultaneous action selection.

During each game, the player’s goal is threefold: increase two main stats (accuracy and bullets), successfully land shots on the enemy, and avoid the enemy's shots.

Although the game is easy to learn, the many combinations of individual playstyles and possible card variations create high replayability, tension during card reveal, and strategic depth.

Eleusis (and later New Eleusis, 1976) is a card game that simulates the scientific method in action. You need two packs of cards, a table and some paper and pencil to play. The 4-8 player range works best.

One player ("God", "Nature" or the "Demiurge") thinks up a rule (a "law of nature") that governs the correct play of the cards. Usually, the rule only involves the most recently correctly-played card, but it can be more complex.

The other players ("Scientists") take turns playing cards ("performing experiments") and race one another to see who can come up with a good hypothesis about the rule. The first player to correctly deduce the rule scores big; God also scores based on how long it took for the players to figure the rule out. God should not choose a rule that is so hard to find out that nobody does, because then he doesn't score.

Additionally, a player with an hypothesis can declare himself to be a "prophet" who can predict the results of the other player's experiments. Other players can then try to bring about the overthrow of the prophet by trying to find experiments whose results cannot be predicted (falsification), thus gaining a chance to become prophet themselves.

A very simple rule would be "Alternate between black and red cards". A simple but hard to discover rule would be "Alternate between cards which have closed loops in their number or letter designations (e.g. 4, Q), and cards which don't (e.g. 2, K)".

And it's all on a tiny deck of cards.

This game was designed as an exercise in "build your own content as needed."

Board Game: Haze Islands

OVERVIEW
You are sailing around a board made of map cards, raiding islands to gain map cards to hand, trying to complete adventure cards. You can deploy your limited number of pirates for extra resources at the risk of leaving your ship defenseless. Every actions costs time, and your deck represents how much time you have. The cards you use are discarded on the next players deck (sometimes known to you, everyone, or no one). The map cards cycle around in manner from the first player to the last marking the end of the round (usually 6 in a game). At the end of each round, the Doom threatens the nearest player, and new adventures appear. If you are hit by The Doom or another player (competitive mode only), your role changes allowing you to return to reclaim your title of the most feared pirate in Haze Islands.

Hero Must Die is a worker placement + tower defense game for print & play. It is a co-op + competitive game for 2-4 players. The goal is to gain most favors (VPs)from the overlord, so that you will get the most powerful monsters under your command. In each turn, a player is assigned to guard one of the 4 floors of the dungeons. Each player starts with 3VPs. You may lose vps by letting heroes pass your guarding floor, or gain vps by defeating heroes. The more vps you gained, the more say you will have in court phase. Beware! you won't want to see your VPs drop to zero. Your overlord is not a forgiving boss for sure.

This near-impossible-to-find rarity from 1998 has just been released as a free digitized download!

Escape From Dinosaur Island! involves a group of U.S. Marines in the South Pacific, circa 1944, who find themselves on an island filled with prehistoric beasts.

In addition to three solo scenarios, the game also includes one two-player cooperative scenario. The game takes inspiration from DC's Weird War comics of the 1960's, the classic microgames of the 1980's, and a bit of ASL.

All files needed to play the game are posted on the BGG page.

We I did not invent Emergo, we discovered it. It is for elimination games what Go is for territory games. Go players emphasize the self-explanatory character of the concept as one of the pillars of its greatness. Emergo players will eventually do the same. Emergo is not a Draughts variant and trying to see it as one will hamper one's understanding.

Emergo can be played on the 41 dark squares of a 9x9 checkered board with dark corners, with 2x12 men. The game is a joint effort by Ed van Zon, who got me interested in Lasca's way of capture in the first place, and me [Christiaan Freeling]. When I made the usual hexagonal translation, using exactly the same rules, I initially found the game incomparably more dramatic, and so did everybody at the games club 'Fanatic' at Twente University in Enschede, the Netherlands. Few cared for the square version after its introduction. Emergo became a hexagonal game overnight, and this hexversion has been played as 'Emergo' on a regular basis for many years at Fanatic.

However, as it turns out, the square game has been grossly undervalued. Though its tactical possibilities are not nearly as mindboggling as those found in HexEmergo, they nevertheless surpass those of Draughts.
