The 'list' is a work in progress -- it is my goal that every single game that is freely available on the internet will be listed here. A lofty goal, to be sure, but a noble one....

Since there are literally hundreds of free games available on the internet, I've decided to break the list into alphabetical chunks.

The format I'm using is pretty simple -- name, designer, publisher, status (free, shareware, demo, etc.), a short summary, and the website where it is available.

All summaries are either taken directly from the designer's/publisher's website, from the rules, or from the BGG entry. Any references to 'me' or 'I' refer to the designer, not yours truly...

Feel free to add to the list, but please only add games that have been released to the public by their designer or publisher -- don't add games that could be made for free using details and rules found on the internet but are actually commercially-published games. Also, please don't add public domain games such as chess, backgammon, poker, etc -- this would make the list unwieldy, to say the least.

Also, if you have played any of these games, please leave your comments.

A version of this list is also available at:

In the world of Ellian, nothing is as it seems. The powers of the ancients still surge throughout the lands. Titans, once slumbering are now awake and hungry for power. Only those that are strong of heart and mind survive this land. You are an adventurer, answering the call of the King. His ranks of Champions need filling, and you need a job. You and your fellow contestants will fight to survive the Labyrintheus. A vast magical catacomb sprawling deep below the Royal Palace. Here you will face adversaries not only of your homeland, but also of those of your party members. Deadly traps riddle the damp halls. Outsmart your party members, and be the one to survive. For if you survive Labyrintheus, you will become a Kings Champion!

Labyrintheus is a card game consisting of two main decks, The Encounter Deck and The Treasure Deck. This turn based card game will scale from 2 players up to 4 players. Each character has 10 Treasure cards and 10 Encounter cards, that they combine with the rest of the party to form the two main decks. But that’s not all, every time you reshuffle the encounter deck you must add two Encounter Difficulty Increase cards raising the difficulty of each and every encounter card. The persona card itself will act as your inventory system. You may equip items you find in Labyrintheus simply by placing the card in the appropriate slot. Your persona card will give you all the information you need to play your selected persona properly.

If you die, no worries. You only become an undead servant of the King. Use the Undead Persona card with a new special ability, and start taking on the other players.

There are two ways to win at Labyrintheus. First, each time you defeat a monster from your homeland you receive a Gate Stone. Collect 4 Gate Stones, and you will summon a Titan to fight. If you defeat the Titan and can complete the portal summoning spell, you exit Labyrintheus and win! 2nd, be the last person to survive! Think you have what it takes?

Imperium: From Republic to Empire is a game of politics and intrigue set against the backdrop of the late Roman Republic (113 B.C. – 49 B.C.). Each player controls a faction of influential Roman Senators who seek to gain power and influence by competing for elected office, leading Rome’s armies to war, administering justice, and expanding the Republic. Advantages are also gained through less noble activities involving conspiracy, bribery, and corruption. Success will require both competition and cooperation as all factions must work together to ensure the stability of Rome. Failures of the Senate and unmet public demand will increase civil unrest, leading to revolt. Excessive war involvement will overextend Rome’s military resources. Committing more funds than what is available for financial obligations will bankrupt the State Treasury. Each of these situations will ensure the fall of Rome causing all players to lose the game. In the midst of these challenges one Senator may gain sufficient prestige as to obtain Imperium Maius (Supreme Authority) and in so doing become the First Emperor of Rome.

The game was designed to be a simplified, less time-consuming alternative to Republic of Rome (Avalon Hill, 1990; Valley Games).

You wanted IT? You got IT!

IT is the legendary 1978 small-format sci-fi wargame from Attack International that may remind gamers of another asymmetrical conflict between a behemoth war machine and an array of lesser opposing forces. (See Ogre.)

IT is a powerful player-customizable war machine. IT's mission is to destroy a Planetary Defense Installation guarded by a variety of conventional forces. IT (the game) includes scenarios for one to three players.

Board Game: IT

Thanks to permission granted by designer David Casciano, this obscure rarity is now available as a free print-and-play download from the BGG files section. The Digital Compilation Edition of IT consists of three separate files: the rules and addendum broken down into two PDF's (due to BGG file-size limitations) and a ZIP containing a scan of the counters and a scan of the mapsheet.

Get IT . . . read IT . . . and, if you dare, maybe even try IT!

The "Historical Documents Edition" of this 1979 microgame is now available for download from the BGG files section for the game.

UPDATE: The Remastered Edition rulebook is also now available for download!

The game's cover blurb describes it as follows:

"Java Man is a simulation game of tribal politics and survival in the pre-historic, pre-agricultural, pre-civilized era. Each player attempts to control a single tribe, to ensure the survival of his tribe, and to boost it along the road to civilization. Towards this end, players work to control the normally random movements of their tribes across a hexagon grid representing a typical area of the pre-historic world, so as to avoid or destroy hostile tribes, contact friendly tribes, and gather as much food as possible."

"The success or failure of previous actions influences a tribe's willingness to obey a leader's orders. Tribes may be ordered, among other things, to go on the warpath against other tribes, to strip the immediate area bare of food, or to conduct mystic rituals, which may have dire results. A unique aspect of this simulation is that, theoretically, a player may win by ordering nothing at all. Of course, victory is more likely if the leader seizes control of the tribe and leads it boldly into the future... or perhaps into a tar pit."

"Game length is 4 years (16 turns) or until all tribes but one are extinct, or longer by mutual agreement of the players. As few as one or as many as want to can play at one time, using the same rules. A four-color map and die-cut counters for up to five players are provided. A regular, 6-sided die (not included) is necessary for play. Typical playing time is two hours."

Just uploaded one of my games to the Geek! Please post any pics of the ridiculous levels that you or your friends draw. Hope you enjoy it.

--------------------------

1-4 Players, 10-30min

A dice-rolling, create-your-own-adventure game to rekindle those drawing and storytelling skills from childhood.

Choose a Villain, build some challenges, then take your Hero through them.

Spend your rolls on abilities, then roll a sum total to beat the challenge.

You will be trying to roll a sum total with 3 dice, then compare that to the 3 target numbers shown on the challenge.

Each challenge you attempt, will allow you to accumulate points.

However, you can only BANK those points when you choose to WALK AWAY and not attempt another challenge.

If you run out of health and are Eliminated while attempting a challenge, you will lose all the points you've accumulated so far at that difficulty level (on that Villain Card).

The player who survives with the Most Points BANKED by the end of 4 difficulty levels/rounds wins.

In May, 1940, World War II took a turn that will change history forever—the German Army invaded France through the neutral countries of Belgium and Netherlands and thus avoiding the fearsome Maginot Line. The French Army, supposedly the best army of the time, felt far from any threat. Against all expectations, the neutral nations were quickly overrun, and the British Expeditionary Corps was forced to be evacuated, almost miraculously, from the channel port of Dunkirk. France capitulated in two months.

This game recreates those events and allows players to reproduce, at a tactical level, the most famous battles of the “Blitzkrieg”. Based on the “A las Barricadas” game system, with new rules added to simulate to this historical period, France 1940 promises many enjoyable hours of fierce game play involving infantry, tanks, artillery, and aircraft from all the armies that took part in this campaign.

Free.

Each player is running their own lemonade stall. Your goal is to try and run the stall as profitably as possible. The game involves buying supplies to make the lemonade (cups, sugar, lemons and ice) and then selling the lemonade (hopefully for a profit). The amount of lemonade that can be sold and the amount of profit is dependent on the weather and also on the prices charged by your competitors (the other players). While you might sell lots of lemonade by setting a low price you won’t be making much profit! The game takes place over a week (from Monday to Sunday). The person who is able to run their stall the most efficiently is likely to end the game with the most money and win the game!

Not everything will always go to plan though as the weather can change, events (both good and bad) occur each day and special benefits can be chosen each day which will influence what you might do each day.

Inspector Moss 2: House Arrest was created for the 2011 Solitaire Print and Play Contest and was awarded 1st Place in the contest.

Inspector Moss must investigate the mysterious death of millionaire baker, John Dough, who has been found battered at his stately country manor during a social gathering in the bachelor’s home. With an injunction in place to keep the guests from leaving, Moss has only a short window of opportunity to investigate and question the suspects. Can he eliminate the innocent and arrest the culprit before the injunction expires?

In this game, you get to play as Inspector Moss, exploring a 25-room house consisting of tiles. Each tile contains either a suspect, evidence that can be used to eliminate suspects, or something to assist you in solving the case in time.

On each turn, you roll 7 white dice and 1 colored "time" die up to 3 times. You may then use up to 6 of the dice for movement (by matching the number on the destination tile), for gathering evidence (with any 4 consecutive dice), and for getting assistance (with any 3 matching dice). After performing any actions, you must move the time marker down a number of spaces equal to the number shown on the time die plus 1 minute for every wild 6 that was used for an action.

There are 10 possible suspects in the game. Once you have collected enough evidence to eliminate 9 of them, you must arrest the remaining suspect and escort him/her to the waiting police car. If you can do all of this before time runs out, you win the game.

There are links there to play on-line but we use the downloaded rules and the Klutz Book of Classic Board Games by Sackson, http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/2883, because it has the stones and the board in a neat travel pouch system.

Publisher: Web published by Green Aphid Games
Status: PnP download available: Print and Play files and links to card decks

Way back in the mists of time (well, September 2nd 2009 to be precise), Cate Pfeifer posted a contest on BGG to design an original rummy style game - some of you may remember the contest.

The Gaston Game, which Ladybug Lunch re-implements, was placed 3rd in this contest, receiving some very positive comments from the judges, including Mike Fitzgerald. Shortly after the results of the contest, The Gaston Game was picked up by Indie Boards and Cards. Spin forward four years and we find ourselves at this point in time.

Back in May, a week or two before the UK Games Expo 2014, Rebekah Bissell and I agreed that it would be in our best interest if we dissolved our contract with Indie Boards and Cards; we did so amicably with Travis Worthington's blessing and goodwill. This would once again give us full control of the direction to take the game.

Well, for now, we have returned the game to PnP.

At the moment there are 2 ways to PnP (with a 3rd coming later): Print and Play files and links to card decks

Description:
You are starving. You are in the middle of Chinatown and only one restaurant is open. Oh no! The menu is written only in Chinese. You only know 5 Chinese characters, one for each meal type (beef, chicken, lamb, fish and vegetables). For each meal type, you are hesitating between two Chinese characters. You will have to try to order using your very limited knowledge of the language. The waiter, slightly confused, will bring you what he thinks the majority wants. The player who successfully orders the most meals will score the most points and win.
The players will do this by predicting which meal type is the most abundant in a common pile of Meal cards. To help them, they will be able to add Meal cards to the pile. However, the more cards they add to the pile, the less prediction they will be allowed to make. To win, a player will have to balance memory, risk-taking and bluffing.

The game is made of 110 cards.

More information about Latice:

LATICE is a strategy game where you match tiles by color and shape. You win by being the first player to play all your tiles, taking advantage of special tiles and squares on the board. LATICE has no language, culture, age or gender barriers and can be played by just about anyone. It offers strategic gameplay for adults while still being simple enough for younger players. As you play LATICE, you'll learn to plan your turns and extra moves ahead of time. You'll strategically use wind tiles to alter the layout of the board, and play both offensively and defensively based on your knowledge of remaining tiles.

Icehouse Pieces
Designers: Andrew Looney, John Cooper
Publisher: Looney Labs
Patented, but free, designer-approved alternatives available (see below)
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/225

Icehouse pieces are more of a game system than a game, since over a hundred games can be played with Icehouse pieces. Some of the more popular games include Gnostica, Zendo, Volcano, IceTowers, and the original game Icehouse.

Icehouse pieces come in 'stashes' of 15 pieces (5 each of 3 sizes) and are available from Looney Labs in 9 colors. Looney Labs also sells a book on games that can be played with Icehouse pieces.

While Icehouse is a commercial product, Andrew Looney has released the specifications for Icehouse pieces:

Also, the Looney Labs website links to instructions on making an origami Icehouse set:

Another set of instructions is available online for making origami Icehouse pieces that are stackable:

Lockhaven is a free print and play board game available via download from Crosstown Games at http://www.geocities.com/crosstowngames/.

The game is played as four players move around the board seeking to loot, overpower, and gamble his way out of the starvation of Ireland by gaining enough coin to pay his passage to America. Players use a combination of die roll for movement and challenge sequences along with various action cards to add that extra bit of strength and strategy.
