The 'list' is a work in progress -- it is my goal that every single game that is freely available on the internet will be listed here. A lofty goal, to be sure, but a noble one....

Since there are literally hundreds of free games available on the internet, I've decided to break the list into alphabetical chunks.

The format I'm using is pretty simple -- name, designer, publisher, status (free, shareware, demo, etc.), a short summary, and the website where it is available.

All summaries are either taken directly from the designer's/publisher's website, from the rules, or from the BGG entry. Any references to 'me' or 'I' refer to the designer, not yours truly...

Feel free to add to the list, but please only add games that have been released to the public by their designer or publisher -- don't add games that could be made for free using details and rules found on the internet but are actually commercially-published games. Also, please don't add public domain games such as chess, backgammon, poker, etc -- this would make the list unwieldy, to say the least.

Also, if you have played any of these games, please leave your comments.

A version of this list is also available at:

Spellwards
2-10 players
5-10 minutes
Free to print and play

A card based word game for 2 to 10 players that plays in 5 to 10 minutes. Spellwards offers a lightning fast word game experience unlike anything you've played before!

To play a card, players must say a word that:
> Starts with the letter on the centre card
> Ends with the letter on the card being played
> Has word length specified by number on card being played

There is no turn order in Spellwards, players may jump in and play a card whenever they are able to come up with an appropriate word. After a card is played, it becomes the new centre card. The first player to play all their cards wins!

If you're looking for a simple word game in the same realm as Bananagrams, I'd suggest you give Spellwards a try

Board Game: The Space War
The Space War
2 players
10-40 minutes
Free to print and play

The Space War is a fast-paced strategic 2 player card game with both players playing with the same cards.

Each player represents a selected commander with the goal to destroy the opponents space station while defending their own.

Develop your station to draw more cards, receive more actions points or increase your hand size. Use spaceships, missiles and strategy to win the war.

The cards in your hand can always be played and most of the time each card can be played in several ways.

If your station gets damage you have to flip that many station cards. If you have no station cards left to flip you lose the game.

This game is more about how you play your cards instead of which cards you have.

Space Goblins 2020 is a remastered-rules edition of a 1988 independently-published game, now available as a free, authorized PnP download from the the BGG files section!

This small-press sci-fi/fantasy wargame portrays man-to-goblin combat aboard spaceships. Raiding goblin forces have rammed their War Cruiser into a human Federation Star Explorer ship, initiating a battle to the death!

From gallery of The Maverick

Space Goblins offers a truly unique take on a familiar gaming scenario, given the eccentric features of the game -- including rules for berserker goblins, Witch Doctors, and "technicians" (units that function as armorers and engineers). Plus, the goblins have ogres and trolls as shock troops! And when was the last time you played a game where captured units were marched off to become dinner in a goblin cooking pot?

If you were a fan of the creative sci-fi microgames of the seventies and eighties, you will want to give Space Goblins a look, just for the nostalgia value alone!

Super Voxel Raiders is a cardgame that reproduces japanese role playing videogame battles (JRPGs) from the 90s. Players first recruit pixellated characters into three different terrain cards, then a battle is fought in each of those terrains, using plenty of fancy special powers. The first player to conquer two terrain cards will gain control over the Voxels and win the game.

Three Plains by Epicwargaming.com or Dave for short

Three Plains is a free print and play tabletop fantasy wargame, where two or more players compete against each other with "armies" consisting of small figures, which are down loaded and printed off and assembled by the players themselves. All the general rules are described in this eBook and the rules themselves are designed to be used on a tabletop gaming board surface, simulating combat on a battle in a balanced and fair manner. However, games may be played on any appropriate surface, although the standard is a 1 metre by 2 metre tabletop decorated with model scenery in scale with the miniatures. Any individual or group of miniatures in the game is called a "Playing Piece", whether represented by a single model, or group of similar troops.

Three Plains is largely set on the Middle Plain, on the World of 'Many' Names, so called because no race will acknowledge any of the other races titles. Although all have a word for ‘Many’ and over the years Many has become the bilingual name for their World. The World of Many much resembles an ancient earth long past, with warlords running amuck and empires throwing thier weight around and there are some great individuals, who are commonly known as Hero’s, Lords and Wizards who face each other on the field of battle usually fighting to the death. This world also has its share of Beasts too, Dragons, Ogres, Wyverns and hundreds more roam and terrorise the lands of Many plaguing the younger races

Three Plains can be downloaded at:http://epicwargaming.com/

Thanks and hope you see you soon

Space Opera is a game of galactic politics for 2 to 4 players. Each player controls a different power bloc striving to come out on top of the new order. Game play is character-driven and the exploits of a handful of a few, key citizens will determine the fate of the galaxy for the next several centuries.

Your goal is to bring the majority of planetary governments under the control of your power bloc. Your tools include recruitment, local elections, diplomacy, and the occasional coup d'état and assassination.

Players take turns activating one of their bloc’s citizens. When activated, a citizen may take 2 different actions; draw a new planet, replace an unpopular government, draw or play opportunity cards, recruit a population or new citizen, and travel.

Dice are rolled to determine the degree of success (if any) of each action. The number of dice rolled depends on your citizen’s requisite skill level. Skills are guile, intelligence, negotiation, opportunity, rank, and wealth.

You can push your luck by re-rolling some of the dice, but failure on a re-roll can lead to failure and injury.

Certain dramatic events, such as an assassination or successful no-confidence vote, ratchet up the tension. This is indicated by removing a clock token from a pool.

Once the pool is empty the game ends and the power bloc that controls the most planetary governments wins!

This is a new game as of this week. A rapid war game with engine building events and territory control. Also, I wrote it.

http://www.wargamevault.com/…/Reign-of-Man--Free-Print--Play

A mighty family and a righteous name. It is but a stepping stone to your true calling. Your rightful dominion… over all the world! Reign of Man is an empire management and territory control war game, for 2-5 players, that takes around an hour from start to finish.

Reign of Man - Legendfolk

Legendfolk introduces a set of fantastical ancient races that exist in the world but aren’t widespread enough for a grab at controlling it. They fear for their people and will offer their skills in return for protection. Players may contact them and dedicate armies from their available army pools to bolster their defenses, through a bidding process, in order to take advantage of their special abilities and units. This expansion can be played with 2 - 5 players in conjunction with the Reign of Man rules and components.

This solo dice chucking worker placement game was created after playing Deep Space D6, and wishing for a bit more theme and narrative in the mix.

Star Trek: the Dice Game forces you to decide between three key areas to which you can deploy your resources each turn. Mission cards must be completed to win the game. Event cards must be overcome to protect yourself. And Development cards should be bought to help achieve the first two goals. Getting the balance right is the difference between success and ignominious failure.

All printable game components have been produced in greyscale to minimise printer ink costs. You can find all necessary files in the Files section.

You will also need several tokens (clear yellow glass beads work best), along with 10 six sided dice.

SUIT UP

Suit Up is a tongue-in-cheek action-drafting board game centered on the world of social interaction and dating. In the game, 2-6 players (4 is the ideal) will spend 60-90 minutes competing with each other to increase their social circle. They will gain valuable contacts and friends and, hopefully, find a true companion that will stick with them through thick and thin.

In Suit Up, you will guide a guy or gal of your choosing along a new path with lifelong consequences. Where will you go in the city to develop your skills and resources? Which people will you influence to achieve your goals? What strange fates will befall your fellow players? With Valentine's Day only two weeks away, will you spend it alone, in a crowd of friends, or with a true friend and companion?

Since time can remember, monkeys in the Great Wood have quarrels over who truly rules the trees. Usually these territorial skirmishes led to a lot of ill-mannered screeching, which was very impressive but rarely decisive.

All of this changed when one enterprising monkey learned that a pulled-back tree branch could launch a breadfruit some distance through the forest. This discovery set off a chain reaction of intensified development into offensive and defensive forest technologies. The monkeys quickly learned that catapults worked better than pulled-back tree branches. Research into fortifications became necessary, as a means of defense against the constant rain of deadly breadfruit launched from catapults. All monkeys were issued saws in order to aid them in procuring the raw materials necessary for the war effort.

Today, as the sun rises over the Great Wood, a feeling of determination accompanies it. All the monkeys feel certain that when the sun sets in the evening, the ultimate ruler of the trees will have been determined, once and for all...

19. Board Game: Skirmish Tactics Apocalypse [Average Rating:7.50 Unranked]
Board Game: Skirmish Tactics Apocalypse

Skirmish Tactics Apocalypse (STA) is a two player skirmish-level tabletop game set in a post-apocalyptic near future.

There are two ways to play STA: skirmishes and campaigns. Skirmishes are standalone games played for a single victory, with no lasting repercussions. Campaigns are a series of skirmishes. In campaigns, players begin with a squad of recruit characters.

STA is a scenario driven game. Each scenario typically has multiple objectives, and combat between factions is usually a secondary or tertiary objective. Players win skirmishes in STA by gaining victory points through accomplishing these objectives.

The game board for STA - called the gamescape - is formed from modular tiles which are themed to represent different environments. Players build the game board with nine modular tiles, each of which are divided into a 7x7 grid. Characters use the grids for movement.

Each character in STA is represented by a token and has a corresponding character card. During campaign play, characters improve their attributes and develop new abilities as they progress from Recruit to Veteran and then Elite status.

Minimum Required Components:
- Approximately 10 character tokens (included);
- 1 character card per token (included);
- 9 7" x 7" modular tiles for the gameboard (included);
- At least one 10-sided dice (not included).

20. Board Game: Quest for the Open Tavern [Average Rating:7.47 Unranked]
Board Game: Quest for the Open Tavern
Quest for the Open Tavern is part of 2014's 2-player game design contest. I've updated the game to playtest version 2 and assembled high quality components from Printerstudio (the cards) and Print and Play Productions (counters and cubes). I'm using a $1 crayon box from Wal-Mart to hold the games. I constructed eight sets of these high quality prototypes to send out to playtesters this month.

Seeking Blind Playtesters and Feedback/Reviews

By David Thompson (with PnP development by Keith Swingruber and art by Michael Parla)

Inspired by E. Nate Kurth

Number of Players: 2

Estimated Playtime: 15 minutes

Summary
In Quest for the Open Tavern, players engage in a competitive blind bid character placement game that embraces DIRECT player interaction. This ain’t your dad’s Euro! One player takes the role of the “Wayfarers of Devastation” — a party of Adventurers that recently slew a Great Red Wyrm (or so they claim) and want to celebrate with random acts of drunkenness and senseless vandalism. But they’ve come to the wrong town! The other player takes the role of Governor Xaggy of Hommlette — he's heard about this band of ne’er-dowells and he’s ready for them — he will stop at nothing to keep the town safe. Complicating the issue is the land is under siege from Zombies, Demons, Drunken Wizards, and a well organized Thieves’ Guild, any of which can force the Wayfarers and Governor Xaggy to become uneasy allies.

In a world past its ending, you'll play as The Last Minstrel, alone on the highlands, searching for the truth about how the world ended. Along the way you'll get lost in an enchanted forest, and find yourself in a dungeon crawl so overwhelmingly large it might take two kitchen tables to get through.

Card game of competing to be emperor of Rome in the turbulent third century when the average reign was a mere two and a half years. This means emperors basically get to do one project before it's on to the next one.

Sky Towers
Players: 1-4
Age: e.g. 7+
Time: 15 min
Forever Free Print and Play Game by award-winning PNP designer Charles Ward from EX1ST GAMES, with a solo mode by Koyomi Kawasumi.

Sky Towers is a family-friendly card game, in which you are building towers of cards. When your tower adds up to 21, you set it aside and keep building. Most cards have an ability or limitation. The challenge is that you cannot play a card that matches the top card in the other player's towers. Points, represented by yellow kites, are counted at the end of the game. Most points wins.

* Has TWO solo modes
* Great for families
* Easy to get into
* Tight tactical 2 player game
* Gorgeous art
* Easy PNP build (54 cards)

SOLO MODES?
There are two solo modes. One is a very light game very much like Solitaire the card game. I'm going to teach my Dad how to play this one over Skype. The other has you play against Taroma, an automa that you need to run. Although I designed Taroma, I actually prefer the light solo game designed by Koyomi Kawasumi.
