The 'list' is a work in progress -- it is my goal that every single game that is freely available on the internet will be listed here. A lofty goal, to be sure, but a noble one....

Since there are literally hundreds of free games available on the internet, I've decided to break the list into alphabetical chunks.

The format I'm using is pretty simple -- name, designer, publisher, status (free, shareware, demo, etc.), a short summary, and the website where it is available.

All summaries are either taken directly from the designer's/publisher's website, from the rules, or from the BGG entry. Any references to 'me' or 'I' refer to the designer, not yours truly...

Feel free to add to the list, but please only add games that have been released to the public by their designer or publisher -- don't add games that could be made for free using details and rules found on the internet but are actually commercially-published games. Also, please don't add public domain games such as chess, backgammon, poker, etc -- this would make the list unwieldy, to say the least.

Also, if you have played any of these games, please leave your comments.

A version of this list is also available at:

Whistling Death
Designer: J. D. Webster
Publisher: Demo

Whistling Death covers the entire Pacific War and primarily features aircraft from the USN and IJN, with a few USAAF and JAAF planes for variety. It includes updated and expanded flight rules, and new rules covering Air-Naval actions and night-fighting. With this rules set, the player can recreate any type of aerial action, whether air-to-air, air-to-ground, or air-to-sea, by day or by night.

JD Webster has produced a 'Quick Start' set of rules. These are a slightly simplified version of the full Whistling Death rules, designed to give players a feel for the rules and how the game plays.

Vietnam Conflict - 1969
Designer: Brandon Gajda
Free

The US was engaged in the Vietnam Conflict from the late 1950’s until the mid 1970’s costing the lives of over 60,000 Americans and over 3,000,000 North Vietnamese, thus being the first American defeat in war. What if the American military had decided to launch an invasion of North Vietnam to force them to sue for peace? Could things have turned out differently or would things have been made even worse?

Each turn, players will add and subtract cards from a shared deck. Then, players will draft cards from this deck. After players have chosen a set of cards, they will take turns playing them. In a turn, players can choose to either discard cards (in order to save ink), or to spend ink to play cards (developing plot-lines). The plots players develop will then influence the next weeks workshop, as they help players to add and remove cards from the shared deck.

A remake of the original Ulimta 1 computer game but in Print & Play boardgame format. For [1] player/solitaire gaming.

The game will consist of all [4] map board continents with each map containing four quadrants printed on 11x17 sheets, which allows you to play on one board at a time or put them all together for one big gameboard.

You can play as one of four character types: THIEF, MAGE, FIGHTER, CLERIC who adventures across the lands of Sosaria, ie gameboards, to accomplish goals, gather gold, gather gems, weapons, armor, spells and scrolls, traveling aids, and equipment. Adventure into Dark Dungeons, Castles, and Towns for Supplies, Equipment and information. Speak with Kings to gather information about the location of all four gems, Fight wandering monsters and evil individuals, open chest to find riches, plus level up and increase your characters abilities and win the game by discovering secret information, finding lost treasures, and defeating the evil overlord "Big Boss" Mondain.

All the fun of the original Ultima 1 but with more challenges, more monsters, more riches, and more fame... plus in a Print & Play board game format.

I've taken some liberty with the game since a board game can't do everything a computer can do but should keep the original play as close to the PC game as possible.

For those of you who have played through the original PC game, you will find that this board game will be similar experience with you traveling, searching, and fighting your way across Sosaria. Just remember that you are now the computer and will be tracking all your stats and information.

I will also try to add as many random elements to the game so each time you play it will be the same Ultima 1 but with a little different experience.

Whack & Slaughter is a quick and brutal hack&slay-style skirmish game, that can be played with any kind of miniatures:
The common D6 becomes a charactersheet, where you distribute the strengths and weaknesses of a character by painting the pips.
Give a character up to three skills to individualize him even more and unleash him onto the battlefield.

The rules are free and the game is meant to be played with as little as 1-2 miniatures per player.

Board Game: VACCINE

A new virus emerges, threatening society as we know it. Help the world fight the deadly virus by finding the best possible vaccine!

Each turn you pick one of the face up Vaccine Tiles and add it to your Science Lab (player board). When completing a row or a column in your Science Lab, you make breakthroughs and can complete objectives on Research Cards to gain Vaccine Points. Breakthroughs also let you gain valuable knowledge by secretly looking at a Disease Card - showing you which traits you should try to avoid on the Vaccine Tiles you pick in the future.

All players will start the game with asynchronous information (you all know something, but none of you know the same), so keeping an eye on the other player's choices can increase your chances of picking the best Vaccine Tiles!

At the end of the game, the weaknesses of the virus is revealed and final scoring commences - It's time to see how many final Vaccine Points each player scores, for having potent Vaccine Tiles to counter the weaknesses. The player with the most Vaccine Points in total is the winner!

Check it out. It's a little text heavy and doesn't look as nice as the production version but it's FREE!!

Print & Play

The beginning of the XVI century was of great transformations in the world, previously unknown lands were discovered by European explorers adventurers ... The New World! More than "discover" it was necessary "conquest" and "colonize" ... Live as one of the early settlers who had the mission to transform the Island of Vera Cruz in what we know today as Brazil!

Vera Cruz is a board game for 2-4 players created by Julio Trois, whose theme is the colonization of Brazil. Each player is a Portuguese colonizer who must establish his colony, planting sugar cane, catechizing or enslaving Indians, to be the 1st to build the Great Mill!

The mechanics are worker placement, management and trading resources, and variable phase order.

ZOMBIES AT THE DOOR

“Zombies at the door” is a zombie apocalypse card/table-top game for one to two players.
ZATD is a CARD GAME that will use your cards and dice as playing elements on the game table for movement, searching, and attacks.

Players take turns searching throughout their neighborhood for survivors, supplies, and weapons then try to make it back to their safe house alive; all the while zombies are everywhere trying to eat them.

Goal: Search [4] houses in the neighborhood and find as many survivors as possible. Along the way you will fight or flee from zombies at every corner; they will be scattered throughout the neighborhood, inside homes and they’re constantly multiplying. You will search for supplies and weapons to help you along the way and rescue survivors who need your help to stay alive.

Once a house is reached, it must be search room-by-room but watch out a zombie could be lurking behind any door! After all rooms have been searched gather any survivors and head outside but be careful; zombies could be waiting for you.
Always remember that your opponent is out there ready to sabotage your progress, draw zombies to your location, pick up supplies that you’ve dropped, and rescue survivors you’ve left behind.

Winning conditions: The first player to search and clear [4] houses and return back to his own Safe House with the most survivors alive wins OR if both players have turned into zombies the one with the most survivors inside his Safe House wins.

Losing conditions: Unfortunately there is no hope for anyone who dies in Zombies at the door. With unknown virus spreading throughout the world everyone has been infected and once you die you turn into the living dead. So, lose your life points and it’s off to the zombie brotherhood for you! Once you become a zombie, you now control a special zombie player card and try to attack and eat your fellow player! You are also in control of all the zombie movements and attacks until the other player wins or is turned into a zombie, which ends the game.

Waving Hands
Designer: Richard Bartle

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/5818

This is a game concerning the imaginary conflict between two powerful wizards in a duel of sorcery. The two opponents perform magical gestures with their hands to create their supernatural weapons - spells. Some spells are so potent as to be able to blind a man, call forth terrifying creatures, or even kill the unfortunate victim instantly. Consequently, each wizard must rely on his own cunning to be able to time enough defensive spells to avoid the brunt of his adversary's attack, yet deliver sufficient offensive spells of his own to crack the magical armour of his opponent, and kill the wizard outright.

The game is an attempt to capture the spirit of such a battle in as simple yet exciting way as possible. The only equipment needed is pencil, paper and opponent. Time taken varies between 15 - 30 minutes. The inventor wishes to state that he has never been involved in a magical duel but would be interested to discover how realistic the game is for those who have been involved in such a bout.

A 9-card SOLO game designed for the 2019 9-card Nanogame PnP Design Contest.

Board Game: Under Falling Skies: A 9-Card Print-and-Play Game

The game uses an innovative dice placement mechanism combined with enemy movement.

The cards form a track with an alien mother ship accompanied with an army of smaller ships on the top and an underground base at the bottom.

Each round, you place dice on various rooms in your base, but when you do, you move all enemy ships in the corresponding column, therefore you must carefully consider where to place each die. While higher numbers mean better room effects, they also move enemy faster. There can be only one die in each column so you are restricting yourself with every placement.

Fortunately, thanks to the room effects, you can shoot down enemy ships or deploy robots to increase your workforce, but don't forget to work on the research as well and watch your energy supply.

The game gets more and more tense as the mother ship descends at the end of each round.

Will you be able to reach the end of the research track before your base suffers too much damage or the mother ship gets into the Earth atmosphere?

The game is set in a cyberpunk future, players represent supercorporations rivals, the Zaibatsu, who struggle to obtain the domain and control of the global network of information, Cybernet and for this we serve a large number of agents, mercenaries pawns they use to achieve their targets.

Zaibatsu is a print and play cyberpunk-themed game, each player in game can move pawns, attack the pawns controlled by other players, put new hexagonal blocks to expand the modular board or gain control of the existing blocks to dominate the board and win the game

The game consists of cards, which allows variety of actions to choose, dice that add random and uncertainty to the game, and a modular board which adds replay value to the game, also each player have the opportunity to control simultaneously multiple pawns each one of them with special abilities and restrictions.

In the game will alternate turns until one player obtain a certain number of control counters over the board.

'About 10 years ago I wanted to design a game that suited my own needs. I played many wargames and although some were close to what my vision is of a perfect game there was always something to bother about.

'I played many many wargames, and many of them dissapointed me. In my opnion a game should have a fine mix of these elements:

* fastpacing, simple and only relevant statics
* depth, a good mix of planning, bluffing, fast thinking and random elements
* flexible, can you implement scenarios, new elements, characters and objects?
* rich, a fantasy world provides a rich world, there are almost no limits
* epic, can you remember the games you played a year ago?
* cheap, well you can actually download Warbands for free from this side. In return I ask you to enter the forums and join the discussions.

'These key-elements I kept in mind developing Warbands, I show no hesitation using elements from excisting games to develop Warbands. Its really fun, fast-paced and has a lot of tactical depth.'

In the game Warbands you are represented by a hero-mage figure controlling a party of a few or maybe a dozen characters on a battlefield. This complete party is called a warband. Each character in the wardband has an unique name. With you controlling this warband you can play the provided scenarios or the ones you created yourself but the game is also designed to battle versus an enemy warband. In an arena or in the open, battle it out till the enemy character is destroyed.

A hex-and-counter wargame of futuristic ground combat for 2 players. Each player assembles a platoon of crawlers, walkers, and powered armor squads and equips them with nukes, stasis rays, lasers, and more. Then the platoons meet in combat where they unleash terrible powers of overwhelming destruction. The interesting bit is that units are near unkillable by direct attack. The weapons are used to destroy/transform terrain to trap enemy units.

War in Rio is a politically incorrect wargame based in the traditional Risk. The main rules and mechanics from the classic wargame remain all the same, but the original board is replaced by one depicting the city of Rio de Janeiro. This new board is divided in 42 "favelas" - how the slums and shanty towns are called in Brazil -, which are arranged in six different sections, following the geopolitical areas of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

In addition, the colored armies now represent the different groups struggling to control the "wonderful city". Two colors represent the government forces: black is the "BOPE" (Special Police Operations Battalion) and blue is the "Polícia Militar" (Military Police). Three colors represent the major criminal organizations in Rio: red for "Comando Vermelho", green for "Terceiro Comando" and yellow for "Amigos dos Amigos". The white pieces represent the several other militias "Milícias" that also play a role in the urban war.

Fabio Lopez, the Brazilian designer who created the game, has already informed that he didn't intend to publish the game or even share it for free. His purpose with War in Rio was solely "to generate a discussion through a shameless invitation to enjoyment." However, such an original idea could not be ignored by Brazilian players and several anonymous fans soon joined forces to recreate the map and the cards based in the original photos posted by Lopez in his blog.

A bit of shameless self-promotion here:

Yūgen is easy to print, even easier to grasp abstract game with a bit of "spiritual" fluff: players take turns placing unique tiles on the board, moving three contemplating "philosophers" along the board.

Instant victory is achieved when 2 such philosophers are pushed out of the board in favour of one player, but the game may end with some of them still on tiles, in which case points are counted.

Wizard's Garden - The Alesalitis Plant
Designer: Tim Schutz
Publisher: Boardgames.About.com
Free

You need:

* 4x4 game board
* 20 Reversi game pieces
* one game pawn

Wizard's Garden is a game about planting and harvesting. The Reversi pieces are called seeds. Players take turns planting (placing game pieces) from a common seed basket (the pile of game pieces). Once a player has four pieces of the same color in a row, he harvests them by removing all four from the board and keeping one. The remaining three game pieces go back into the seed basket. The wizard who harvests the most flowers wins.
